The object of my invention is to devise a ham boiler which gives greater durability and strength, greater economy of operation, and in practical .5 application an improved quality of hams.
I attain my object by mounting inverted or expanding coil springs on the cover and pivotally connecting ratchet members to the. ends of said springs for engagement with the ends of the receptacle and by the various other features of construction hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Throughout all figures, similar numerals refer to similar parts of the invention.
The receptacle 4, is constructed of metal and is rectangular in shape with anvopen top, having at such open top an outwardly extended flanged rim which is divided into four parts 6, '7, 8 and 9.
The rim, as will be seen in Fig. 1 is cut away diagonally at the corners. This rim lendsstrength and rigidity to the body. The parts of the rim 6 and 8 at the ends are preferably semi-circular in cross-section as shown in Fig. 2 and serve a further purpose as catches for ratchets as hereinafter described.
A feature of the construction of the receptacle 4 is that the seams at each end thereof are shaped substantially like an inverted letter Y as shown in Fig. 3 whereby a. substantial saving in ma.- terial is effected in the manufacturev thereof,
The cover consists primarily of a metal plate- 10, flat, or slightly moulded to lend shape to the ham. Welded firmly upright on this plate 10 is another plate 12 which reinforces the first plate 10 against bending stresses. The ends of the plate 12 designated as 12 and 12 respectively may be of somewhat lesser height and are bent in opposite directions at an angle to the centre area of the plate. 12 serving to increase the rigidity of both plates 10 and 12.
The spring comprises four helices or coils 13, 14, and 16 the axes of which lie perpendicular to the main surface of the plate 12. From the inner end of the coils of the spring adjacent the plate 12 and extending upwards and outwards towards the ends of the cover plate 10 are arms 13 14 15 and 16 these same being integral continuations of the coils of the spring and each arm being integral with and connected to the adjacent arm at the same end of the cover. At their exon tremities these arms of the spring act as proper shafts upon which are supported the two ratchet members 17 and 18. The coils .14 and 15, and the coils 13 and 16 are joined by tangential arms 24 and 25 respectively which engage the cover 10 and serve to support the coils thereon.

The bent ends 12 and 12 of the upright plate 12, previously described, serve an important purpose in checking the downward movement of the arms. 13%. 14 15. and .16 of the spring when pressure is. applied thereto thereby preserving so the said spring when in operation from excessive flexing or breakage. The upright plate 12 serves a further purpose as a guide to control and direct the movement of the spring.
On the upper surfaces of the spring arms 13 35 14*, 15 and 16 at the points where pressure is applied in operation as illustrated only in Fig.
4 may be Welded ridges of stainless metal 21 which serve to resist abrasion and prevent rust where located. Welded to the spring arms 13 14 15 99 and 16 may also be one or more knobs 22 as in Fig. 1 which keep in proper position the ratchets 17 and 18.
The two ratchets 17 and 18 are of metal in the form of a channel of U shaped cross section as. particularly shown in Fig. 5. The channel is compressed. at the top thereof and provided with a hole through which the arms of the spring pass. Each ratchet 17 and 18 has several teeth lying on m, a convex curve as shown in Fig. 2. This convex curving of the position of the ratchet teeth is designed to compensate for any lateral movement of the spring arms when in operation.
Alternatively to being constructed of one single continuous piece the spring may be joined atone or more places. Where this modified type of spring is used each join is coupled by means of a plain metal tube. In Fig. 4 the spring is shown divided at its centre. The plain metal tube permitting limited vertical movement of the spring; an outwardly extending arm on said spring; a ratchet member pivotally connected to the end of said arm; and means on said receptacle engageable by the ratchet member.

said brace plate and positioned within the spring permitting limited vertical movement of the spring; an outwardly extending arm on said spring adapted when pressed downwardly to engage the bent end of the brace plate; a ratchet member pivotally connected to the end of "said arm; and means on said receptacle engageable by the ratchet member.
3. In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; acover adapted to slide within thereceptacle for compressing the ham; a coil spring mounted on the cover; a brace plate extending longitudinally of the cover and substantially centrally thereof and-having its end bent at right angles thereto; an outwardly extending arm onsaid spring adapted when-pressed downwardly to engage the bent end of the brace plate; a ratchet member pivotally connected to the end of said arm; and means on said receptacle engageable by the ratchet member.

In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; a cover adapted to slide within the receptacle for compressing the ham; a brace plate extending longitudinally of the cover and substantially centrally thereof; a pair of coil springs mounted on said cover and connected at adjacent ends and each having an outwardly extending arm atthe other end; a horizontal shaft extending from the brace plate through the .coil of each spring, permitting limited vertical transposition or movement of the spring; a ratchet member pivotally connected to the end of each arm; and means on said receptacle engageable by the ratchet member.
5. In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; a cover adapted to slide within the re-' ceptacle for compressing the ham; a brace plate extending longitudinally of the cover and substantially centrally thereof; a pair of coil springs ratchet member pivotally connected to the endof each arm; and means on said receptacle efigageable by the ratchet member.

In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; a cover adapted to slide within the receptacle; a brace plate extending longitudinally of the cover and substantially centrally thereof; a pair of coil springs mounted on the cover on each side of the brace plate, each pair of said springs being connected to each other at adjacent ends and each having an outwardly and upwardly extending arm at the other end connected to the "corresponding arm on the spring on the other side of the brace plate; a ratchet member pivotally connected to the said arms at each end of the cover; and means onkthe receptacle adapted to be engaged by said ratchet members.

In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; a cover adapted to slide within the receptacle for compressing the ham; a coil spring mounted on the cover; a horizontal shaft supported from the cover and extending within the coil of the spring permitting limited vertical movement of the spring; an outwardly and upwardly extending arm on the spring; and interengageable ratchet means on the end of said outwardly and upwardly directed arm and the receptacle.
12. In a ham boiler, the combination of a receptacle; a cover adapted to slide within the receptacle for compressing the ham; a pair of coil springs mounted on the cover, said springs being spaced apart lengthwise of the cover and connected by arms extending tangentially from the coil adjacent the cover and normally resting on the cover, and said springs each having an upwardly directed arm extending tangentially therefrom; a horizontal shaft supported from the cover extending within each coil of the spring permitting limited vertical movement of the spring; and interengageable ratchet means on the end of said upwardly directed arm and the receptacle.
