This invention relates to a case or carton, and has special reference to novel means mounted in connection with a case or carton and operative to open and to close the same.

Objects of the invention are to provide a device for use in connection with a case or carton and comprising walls engaging the walls of the case or carton and having a connection hinged to said walls of said device and provided with an opening which may be brought into and out of registration with one end of the case or carton so as to provide an opening through which articles may be removed from and placed in the case or carton when the device is properly manipulated; to provide ieans whereby the open end of the case or carton may be closed by said connection when said device is manipulated in another manner; and to pro vide improved means wherebysaid. connection may be easily engaged and manipulated and move the device from one position to another.

Another object of the invention is. to provide improved means for holding the device in cooperative relationship with the case or carton.

Other objects will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- 1 is a perspective View, with parts broken away, having an embodiment of our improved closure device in connection therewith and in closed position.

The case or carton in connection with which the device is shown is a cigarette container and comprises vertical side walls 1, vertical end walls 2, and a bottom wall 3 connected with the lower ends of the walls 1 and 2. The upper end of one of the Walls 1 is shown withnotches 4 formed therein but these may be provided or not, as desired.

The upper end of the case or carton is open and-our improved closure'device is applied to the case or carton in such a way as to be easily manipulative to open and to close said upper end. The bottom wall 3 may have slits 5. forming tonguesG to be pushed upwardly to raise the cigarettes and extend them through the upper end of the case or carton for convenient withdrawal.

As shown,- one form of the closure device comprises a blank made of cardboard, or the like, and including an end member 7 having approxi mately the same width as the walls 1 and having connected with its lateral edges the tabs 8. The part? is designed and intended to seat against and slide along one wall 1 while the tabs 8, which are connected with the part 7 along score lines 9, extend across and against the walls 2. The blank further comprises a part 10 matching the part 7 and having about the same width as the walls land being arranged to seal against and slide along the opposite wall 1 from the part 7. Tabs ,11 are connected with the side edges of the part 10 along fold lines or score lines 12 and are designed andadapted to overlap the tabs 8 adjacent. to the walls 2.

The part 10 of the blank has connected with its upper edge a tab 13, which is approximately of the same area as the area of theend of the case or carton so as to form acomplete closure for the upper end of the case or carton. The part 13 is connected with the part 10 by a hinge device or fold line 14.

A connecting element 15 has one end attached to the part 7 by a hinge device 16 and hasits opposite end forming an outwardly extended lip or flange 17 integrally or otherwise connected with the adjacent edge of the tab 13. The connecting element 15 extends from the part? a distance in excess of the distance between the walls 1 and has one edge in continuation of one edge of the tab 13 and also in alinement with one of the till hinge lines 9 and one of the hinge lines 12 (Fig. 5). The width of the connecting element in the other direction is less than the width of the parts '7 and 10, so that an opening will be provided at the end of the case or carton when the device is in proper position to form-such an opening.

The tab 13 is provided at each end with a tab 18. The tabs 18 extend downwardly at the inner ides of the walls 2 and constitute means to hold the ends of the tab 13 in proper alinement with the remaining portion of said tab. Thus, the ends of the tab 13 are held from bending or curving upwardly from the end of the case or carton.

The parts 7, 8, 10 and 11 which extend downwardly at the inner sides of the walls 1 and 2 are slidable from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 1 the extended part 17, which is attached to both the tab 13 and the connecting element 15, extends laterally and is readily engageable by the tips of the fingers or finger nails, so that the tab 13 may be swung upwardly to move the parts 7 and 8 upwardly, and then push downwardly to move the parts 10, 11 and 13 downwardly to provide an opening at the end of the case or carton, as shown in Fig. 2.

A device embodying these features of construction is easily manually engageable and movable and is guided properly by cooperation of the parts '7, 8, 10, 11 and 18 with the walls 1 and 2 and with each other.

In the alternative form of the device shown in Fig. 6, the case or carton is of the same construction as that already described herein. The closure device comprises an end part 19 having the shape and dimensions of the part 10 and extending, preferably for sliding movements, along the inner side of one of the walls 1' of the case or carton. A tab 20 is pivotally or flexibly connected with the upper end of the part 19 and has about the same shape and size as the tab 13 in order to close and cover the entire end of the case'or carton when in closed position. A relatively narrow tongue 21 extends from the free edge of the tab 20 and is pivotally or flexibly connected therewith. The tongue 21 is designed and intended to extend downwardly at the inner side of the wall 1 opposite from the part 19 and to maintain frictional engagement with the structure of the case or carton to hold the tab 20 close against the ends of the walls 1 and 2 in order to close the case or carton. The tongue 21 is withdrawable and insertable at will in order to open and close the case or carton, as should be understood by thereto with exponents. In addition, this alternative, form of device comprises a connecting strip 23 extending across thepart 10 and having its ends attached to the tabs 8'. This device may be mounted around the case or carton instead of at the inside thereof. It should be obvious that the device is easily slidable and movable from the position shown in Fig. 7 to the position shown in Fig. 8, and vice versa, in order to open and close the carton.

The construction and arrangement of our improved closure device may be varied otherwise than in the particulars specifically illustrated and we contemplate such variations as may be desired.

We claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a case or carton having walls forming an enclosure open at one end, in combination with a closure therefor having end portions extending downwardly for relative longitudinal sliding movements along the walls of said case or carton and having an intermediate portion provided with an opening adapted to be brought into and out of registration with: the open end of said case or carton when said endportions are slid in 0pposite directions, hinges connecting said intermediate portion with said end portions respectively, and a projecting manually engageable part in connection with said intermediate portion whereby said intermediate portion may be operated to slide said end portions and place said opening in or out of registration with the open end of said case or carton as aforesaid.

2. A closure for a case or carton that has side walls forming an enclosure with an open end comprising a device having a portion extending across and closing said open end of said case or carton and having the opposite end portions extending downwardly for relative sliding movements, overlapping tabs in connection with said end portions, means connecting said first-named portion with one of said end portions, a connecting portion uniting said first-named portion with the other end portion and forming an opening adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton to open and to close the same, means preventing separation of said end portion and said tabs from the case or carton, and a handle member in connection with said first-named portion for operating said device.

3. A closure for a case or carton that has side walls forming an enclosure with an open end comprising a device having portions extending downwardly at opposite sides of said side walls, overlapping tabs in connection with the side edges of said portions, means hinged to said side portions and movable to position to close said open end and also movable to position to open said open end, and means connecting a pair of said tabs and holding the closure in connection with and guiding said closure in movements relative to said case or carton.

4. A closure for a case or carton that has side walls forming an enclosure with an open end comprising a device having portions extending downwardly at opposite sides of said side walls, overlapping tabs in connection with the side edges of said portions, means hinged to said side portions and movable to position to close said open endand also movable to position to open said open end, means connecting a pair of said tabs and holding the closure in connection with and guiding said closure in movements relative to said case. or carton, and a handle member in connection with said device and projecting therefrom for manual engagement to operate said de vice. 4
