Claims.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved handle for door latches and the like, which is attractive in appearance, light in weight yet strong and rugged, and economical to produce.
A further object is to provide a structure wherein the handle bar is conformed to constitute the back plate and a support for the outer casing member.
Another object is to provide improved means for holding the spindle housing sleeve or ferrule in assembled relation with the handle bar and outer casing member.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.

In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, numeral 1 indicates the spindle of the latch and 40, 2 the escutcheon or door plate. I have not shown the latch proper nor the door as the relation of these parts to my structure will be well understood by those skilled in the art. At the outer end of the spindle, I fixedly secure the handle bar 3 4570f outwardly facing channel section and conformed to provide an inset groove or recess 4 around its rear edge and a step 5 adjacent the spindle. The ends of the handle bar are tapered and rounded as shown, the side flanges 6, 6 being also rounded. The foot '7 of the spindle housing sleeve or ferrule 8 is flared and conformed to fit the step 5 of the handle bar and seated therein,
the foot having an out-turned flange 9 substantially coinciding with the adjacent rear edge of the handle bar.
Over this handle bar, I arranged an outer casing member or cover 10 suitably conformed and of general channel cross section. This casing member is disposed so as to completely embrace the sides and top of the handle bar and is pro vided with a longitudinally fluted web 11 engaging the edges of the flanges of the handle bar. Thus, the handle bar constitutes an effective backing and support for the outer casing member. The flanges 12 of the casing member are turned inwardly to engage the out-turned flange 9 of the spindle housing sleeve or ferrule and the inset groove or recess 4 around the rear edge of the handle bar to hold these parts in assembled re-- lation without the aid of screws or solder or similar fastenings.
The escutcheon 2 and the handle are held in position on the spindle by means of the compression spring 13 disposed within the escutcheon.
With the parts of my handle constructed and arranged in this manner, the handle bar constitutes an effective support for the outer casing member as well as a back plate, the handle being very strong and durable owing to the channel shape of the handle bar and outer casing member. Further, my handle is light in weight and economical to produce.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations, as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a spindle, of a handle bar of outwardly facing channel section secured to the outer end of said spindle and conformed to provide an inset groove around its rear edge and a step adjacent said spindle, a spindle housing sleeve having a flared foot conformed to fit said step and seated therein, the foot having an outturned flange, and an outer casing member of inwardly facing channel section embracing said handle bar and having a web engaging the edges of the flanges thereof, the casing member having inturned flanges at its rear edgesengaging the out-turned flange of said spindle housing sleeve and the inset groove around the rear edge of said handle bar.
2. The combination with a spindle, of a handle bar of outwardly facing channel section secured to the outer end of said spindle and conformed to provide an inset groove around its rear edge, the handle bar having tapered and rounded ends, and an outer casing member of inwardly facing channel section directly embracing said handle bar and having a longitudinally fluted Web engaging the edges of the flanges thereof, the casing member having inturned flanges at its rear edges engaging the inset groove around the rear edge of said handle bar.
3. The combination with a spindle, of a handle bar secured to the outer end of said spindle and conformed to provide a transverse step adjacent said spindle, a spindle housing sleeve havinga flared foot conformed to fit said step and seated therein, the foot having an out-turned flange, and a casing member embracing said handle bar and having inturned flanges at its rear edges engaging the out-turned flange of said spindle housing sleeve and the rear edge of said handle bar.
4. The combination with a spindle, of a handle bar secured to the outer end of said spindle and conformed to provide a non-circular step adjacent said spindle, a spindle housing sleeve having a flared non-circular foot conformed to fit said step and seated therein, and a casing member embracing said handle bar and having inturned flanges at its rear edges engaging the flared foot of said spindle housing sleeve.
5. A handle comprising a handle bar of channel section, and a finishing cover of channel section telescopically receiving said handle bar and having its flanges turned inwardly to engage the same and hold the parts in assembled relation, whereby the Web of the handle bar constitutes a back plate for the cover and the flanges of the handle bar constitute supports for the Web of the cover.
