An object of the inven' ion is to provide a novel container and asupport therefor by use of which the top'layer of goods in the container may be continuously displayed and is maintained intact until the remainder of the goods in the container has been dispensed, said'support likewise providingfor hinged forward movement or tilting of the container and the support off the display rack brstand for eifecting convenient dispensingof thegoods. n

vWith reference to the drawing: The container "support of the present invention is preferably formed of metal and comprises a rectangular open frame 8 and a base 9 connected to and extending at right angles therewith. The frame 8 "is L -shaped in cross-section as seen in Fig. 5 and two of its sides are formed with integral rearward extensions sides of the base 9 and are preferably integral therewith. At its rear, the base 9 is formed with an apron or rearward extension 11 on the outer extremity of which a hook 12 may' be provided. At the front of base9 means are provided for pivotally mounting the support upon a shelf. These means comprise a spring urged rod 13 projecting outwardly of one side of the base and the permanently secured stud or rod 14 projecting outwardly of the other side of the base. These rods are adapted to bejournalled in a pair of journal plates 15 secured to a shelf 16. In positionj tioned. Other means may 10 which are joined to the ing'the support upon the shelf, the permanently secured rod 14 is first inserted in its journal plate and then spring rod 13 is withdrawn until said rod is in alignment with its journal plate when the rod is released and projectedinto its journal 'mounting. .For inserting or removing-the container to be described, the support is removed from its mounted position.

The container of the present invention comprises a box made up of a bottom 1'7, 18 and lid 19. The bottom wall 17 of the box has a'portion thereof, which may be substantially a half section of said bottom,-formed to provide a hinged cover 20 having flanges 21 for engaging the sides 18 of the box and for holding said cover in closed position. The box is likewise constructed in a well known manner to provide short flanges 22 projecting inwardly of the top of the box body and which short flanges, on two sides of the box are turned outwardly as seen in Fig. 4, when the container isto be positioned inthe support of the present invention. The container may likewise be provided with a' paper strap 23 which passes immediately beneath the hinged connection of the cover 20 for giving strength to said connection. Interiorly of the container, a partition 24 may be positioned immediately beneath the top layer 25 of goods in the box. This partition may be releasablyretained in place by suitable means such as lugs 26 projecting inwardly from the walls 18 of the container. The top layer of cakes maybe conveniently held in place, in the uppermost of the compartments formed by said partition, by a suitable frame or rack 32 such as are commonly used for this purpose. The remainder of the cakes or other goods 27 may be disposed in any suitable manner in the lower of said compartments. In shipping the goods, the lid 19 is positioned and is held thus by means of a paper strap 28 which may be provided in addition to the strap 23 already menbeemployed.

In positioning the container and its holder, the lid 19 of the container is removed, and two oppositely disposed flanges 22 are turned outwardly of the top of the container as heretofore de- "scribed. Adjacent the upper part of frame 8, the two side members of said frame may be cut and I rolled in to provide a short flange 30, as clearly seen ,in'Fig. 5. The short flanges 22 of the conside walls tainer, in their outturned position, are forced past this short flange 30 until they seat snugly behind it to preclude accidental removal of the container from its holder. The support, with the container held thereby, is now positioned on a shelf in a manner heretofore described. The goods are thus disposed in their display position. When it is desired to dispense the goods, the support and container are tilted forward and the bottom cover 20 of the box is hingedly turned up, all of which is clearly seen in Fig. 3. The goods are withdrawn through the bottom of the box whereby the top layer 25 is maintained intact until the rest of the goods have been dispensed. At this time the inner partition 24 may be removed and the top layer taken out. It will likewise be seen in Fig. 3 that means are provided for precluding forward tilting of the container and support beyond a proper dispensing position. These means comprise the extension 11 of the base which may project clear of the rear of the shelf as seen in Fig. 1. A chain 31 has one of its ends secured to the hook 12 on the rear of extension 11 and its other end secured to the rear edge of shelf 16 as shown at 33. The chain is of such length as to preclude tilting of the container and support beyond that point at which the bottom of the container is disposed uppermost and in a substantially horizontal position.

' It may be here remarked that the glass cover 29 displaying the top layer of cakes may be replaced by the frequently used cellophane or simito preclude spilling out of the goods from the box.

The means of the present invention are simple in use and in manufacture and represent a dis- .tinct advance in the art inasmuch as an orderly display of goods may be maintained at all times,

without impediment to the convenient dispensing of the goods which, according to this invention,

may be carried out efficiently and with a minivmum of effort.

Modifications become apparent upon consideration of the means disclosed herein but these are believed to be comprised within the spirit and scope of the present invention.

What is claimed is:

1. Container, dispensing and display means for cakes and the like, and comprising a box for con- 'taining the cakes, a hingedly movable cover on the bottom of the box, a support for the box I comprising an open frame adapted to frictionally embrace the top of the box, and to cooperate with a transparent cover placed over the top layer of cakes for displaying said layer, said support likewise comprising a base member adapted to embrace a side of the box and to rest upon a shelf for holding the box with said display layer in vertical position, means at the front of said base member for hingedly attaching said support to a shelf to permit forward tilting of the I support and box whereby access may be had into the box by means of said hinged bottom cover for dispensing the cakes, means in the box maintaining in position said display layer until the other cakes have been dispensed, and means 'precluding forward tilting of the support and box beyond a proper dispensing position.

2. Container, dispensing and display means for cakes and the like, and comprising a box for containing the cakes, a hingedly movable cover forming a portion of the bottom of the box, a box support comprising an open frame adapted to frictionally embrace the top of the box, transparent cover means associated with said top and frame for displaying the top layer of cakes, said support likewise comprising a base member adapted to embrace a side of the box and to rest upon a shelf for holding the box with said display layer in vertical position and with said hinged cover movable upwardly to the closed position, means at'the front of said base for hingedly mounting said support on a shelf to permit forward tilting of the support and box whereby access may be had into the box by means of said hinged bottom cover for dispensing the cakes, means in the box maintaining in position said display layer until the other cakes have been dispensed, an extension on the rear of said-base, and a'chain or the like attached at one end-to the extension and at the other end to the-shelf and precluding forward tilting of the box and support beyond a proper dispensing position. 1 F

Article containing, dispensing and display means comprising a box, an openable closure on the bottom of the box,'a stand of shelves, a framelike support for the box and adapted to frictionally engage the top and an adjacent side wall of the box and to be positioned on a shelf with the top and bottom of the engaged box in upwardly extending positions and with the box resting on said engaged side wall thereof, means separately supporting the top layer of goods in the box for maintaining orderly arrangement thereof while the remainder of the goods is dispensed, transparent cover means for the box for displaying said top layer of goods while the top of the box is in the upwardly-extending position described, and hinge means associated with the front of a shelf and with the front bottom portion of said support as disposed on the shelf, whereby the support and the box engaged thereby may be swung off the shelf forwardly of the stand for disposing the bottom of the box uppermost with the closure thereof in freely openable position for dispensing the goods.
