see Figs. 3 and 4, for holding the knife blade in set position against the tendency of displacement by the centrifugal force and the reaction forces incident to severing the cigarette rod.
Preferably, the cut-off mechanism is provided with suitable whetting or grinding means, i. e., sharpening means, operative automatically upon the rotation of the knife blade. Such sharpening element is referred to herein as a disc, irrespective of its sharpening and/or grinding and/or whetting function and the material and shape employed for the same. Such disc is preferably positioned relative to the path of the severing edge 52 of the knife blade 49 to effect the desired action without requiring movement of the disc in the direction of its axis, but preferably permitting rotation of the disc about its axis, effected either idly upon rotative engagement of the severing edge therewith or by positive drive if preferred.
As one form of mounting of such disc, see Fig. 9, disc 61 is universally mounted for all possible positions of the plane of its effective face and for vertical height and rotary adjustment about the vertical and the horizontal, and as shown comprises the bearing 62 rotatively receiving a suitable stud at one end of which the disc 61 is mounted concentrically with the axis of such stud, such stud being adjustably axially set by the screw-threaded stud 63 having the manipulating head 64, the screw-threading being received within suitable threading on the inner face of the bearing 62, the bearing 62 and its post 65 being pivotally mounted on the vertical, supporting post 66. The extent of pivotal adjustment of the bearing 62 controlled by the set screw 6'7, the threading of the shank of which meshes with the threaded, tapped opening 68 in the post 66. The post 66 is adjustable to vertical height by means of a suitable gear having the indicated manipulating head 69, the gear meshing with the circular rack gear teeth 70, and the rotative adjustment of the post 66 about the vertical being had by the worm 7 1, rotatively mounted in the supporting hollow post 72, the worm being adjusted by its indicated manipulating head '73.

The worm '71 meshes with vertically extending teeth on the post 66, the series of teeth extending annularly about the post 66, and of suificient vertical extension to provide for the required vertical movement of the post 66 in the vertical adjustment of the same by the adjusting head 69, as aforesaid.
From the above, it will be apparent that the speed of the severing means provided by my'invention is at all times, when properly initially set, in accurate synchronism with the rod-forming mechanism and other actuated parts of the cigarette making machine proper, and insures proper functioning of my cut-off mechanism at any desired increased speed at which the rodforming mechanism and associated parts of the cigarette making machine may be effectively operated. At all speeds of operation of my cut-off mechanism, the coacting parts, to wit, the rotating knife blade-and the ledger plate are reciprocated at the stage of severing in the direction and at substantially at the same rate of forward travel of the cigarette rod, the knife head and its supporting plate, as well as the ledger plate being reciprocated in the opposite direction during a non-severing stage.
It will be further apparent that but little inertia arises in the movement of the reciprocated parts, and of a magnitude which does not affect the proper co-relation of the actuated parts for the full range of speed at which the rod-forming mechanism and the associated parts of the cigarette machine proper can be effectively operated.
I claim.
1. A cut-off mechanism for a rod forming cigarette making machine, comprising a rotary knife blade support, fixed bearing means for said rotary knife blade support, a knife blade, hinged means for mounting said knife blade on said knife blade support, means for rotating said knife blade support in synchronism with the rod forming mechanism, cam means for displacing said knife blade relative to said knife blade support during the stage of severing, ledger plate means for receiving the cigarette rod formed by the rod forming mechanism, and means for displacing said ledger plate means in the direction of travel of the cigarette rod during the stage of severing.

A cut-off mechanism for a rod forming cigarette making machine, comprising a rotary knife blade su'pport, fixed bearing means for said rotary knife blade support, a knife blade, hinged means for mounting said knife blade on said knife blade support, means for rotating said knife blade support in synchronism with the rod forming mechanism, means for displacing said knife blade relative to said knife blade support during the stage of severing, ledger plate means for receiving the cigarette rod formed by the rod forming mechanism, and cam means for displacing said ledger plate means in the direction of travel of the cigarette rod during the stage of severing.

A cut-off mechanism for a rod forming cigarette making machine, comprising a rotary knife blade support, fixed bearing means for said rotary knife blade support, a knife blade, hinged means for mounting said knife blade on said knife blade support, means for rotating said knife blade support in synchronism with the rod forming mechanism, fixed cam means for displacing said knife blade relative to said knife blade support during the stage of severing, ledger plate means for receiving the cigarette rod formed by the rod forming mechanism, and means for displacing said ledger plate means in the direction of travel of the cigarette 'rod during the stage of severing.
