June 27, 29336 w. a. BRONANDER TOBACCO COMPRESSOR FOR CIGARET'IE MACHINES .Filed Oct. 1, 1932 *2? fig ATTORNEY WILI-IELM BRONANDER, or ivroNroLAIn, new JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'ro AMERICAN compression work folds the travelling wrapper strip around the Patented June 27, 1933 FFUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MACHINE &1FOUNDRY COMPANY, A CGR-PGRATION OF NEW JERSEY TOBACCO comrnnssonron CIGARETTE MACHINES Application filed. October 1, 1932. Serial No. 635,837.
Thisi nvention relates totobacco compressors for continuous rod cigarette machines, its main object bemg to overcome the dlfiiculties moving wrapper strip size and shape of the tobacco core in the finished cigarette rod, before it enters the rod 3 form. With this and other'obj ects not specifically mentioned in view, the inventlon consists in certain constructions hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the present invention this object is accomplished by placing a compression unit consisting of rotating side disks eccentrically mounted with respect to the central pressure .wheel in the path of the moving tobacco layer. This causes gradual compression of the tobacco layer to approximately its final shape thereby producing a uniformtobacco core and taking a corresponding amount of off the rod former which tobacco layer to form the cigarette rod this relieving of the cigarette rod former being of great importance in high speed machines.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved compressor;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional elevations taken on lines 33 and 1 1 respectively of Fig. 1, showing the compressing action of the improved unit.
In carrying the invention into effect there is provided a cigarette rod compressor comprising two disks, a wheel between said disks, and an eccentric mount for producing relative movement of said disks and said wheel when rotated. In the best constructions contemplated the eccentric mount includes a support, an eccentric engaging said wheel and having a hub engaging said disks and se-.
cured to said support. In the preferred form rotating the disks and wheel, including a driving shaft journaled in said hub and connected to one of said disks. In the best form of construction contemplated the disks are. connected by studs passing through apertures in the wheel, thereby rotating the Wheel with the disks. These various means and parts may be widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular device selected to illustrate the in- I vention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the specific construction shown and described.
Referring to the drawing, the bracket 10 is fastened tothe frame of the cigarette machine. (not shown) and supports a shaft 11 which carries a gear 12 meshing with a gear- {13 attached to the shaft 14 which is driven from the main drive of the machine. The shaft 11 carries a sprocket 15 which drivesa chain 16 running over a sprocket 17 thus: imparting motion to the driving shaft 18. An. eccentric mount is provided comprising a .swingably mounted arm 19 carried by shaft 11,. and a stationary eccentric 20, having a hub secured in the arm 19 and provided with a bore, in which rotates the driving shaft 18. The rotation; of shaft 18, through; the plate 21 attached to the end of the shaft and disk 22, drives the disk 22 the disk 22 being coupled by means of studs'23 to theroppozsite disk 24;, and the disks. 22 and 24: havingbores fitted on the hub of the eccentric mount- Thu'sthe rotation of the outer'disks 22 and 2 1, drives the compressor wheel 25, which has a bore fitted on the eccentric 20, by means of the studs 23 engaging in apertures 26 in the compressor wheel 25. By thelayer T is led'through the rod former 29' which folds the paperstrip P around the tobacco layer to form the cigarette rod. The tongue 30 of the rod former projects between a the disks 22 and 24, and acts as a scraper and removes the tobacco from thecompressor wheel. The projecting arm 31 of bracket carries: an adjustable screw 32 the end of which bears 'against a boss 33 of the arm 19, thus providing'means for regulating the distance between the compressor wheel and lhthe bottom of the trough 27. .Byadjusting the angular position of thestationary eccentric the clearence between-the compressor wheel 'and the bottom of the trough may be further regulated, whilethe outer iicdisks 22 and 24 remainin their same relativepositionwith respect to the compressorwheel when rotated, said mount including a support and an eccentric engaging said wheel and having a hub engaging said discs and secured to said support.
- 5. A cigarette rod compressor comprising two disks, a wheel between said disks, an eccentric mount for producing relative eccentric movement of said disks and said wheel when rotated, and means for rotating said disks and said wheel ,on said mount, said mount including a movable support and an eccentric engaging said wheel and having a hub engaging said disks and secured to said support, and saidimeans including a driving shaft journaled in said hub.

wheel-since they are turned with the latter a by the engagement of their 1 connectingistuds 23 with the walls of the apertures 26 jinthe these apertures are properly placed to-permit the studs 23 therein to drive the compressor wheel I continuously clockwise, as viewed in Fig; 1, in any adjusted position "of the compressor wheel; It will. be obvious that the hub of the eccentric mount must be unfastened from arm '17 topermitzthis adjustment. In this manner a greater or lesser compressing pressure can be applied to the tobacco layer T by the compressor wheel 2 without changing the position of the disks 1 22 and 24.
What is claimed is:.
twodisks, a wheel between said disks, and an eccentr c mount. for producing relative eccentric movement of said disks and said wheel when rotated.
trio movement of saiddisks and said wheel when rotated, and means for rotating said disks and said wheel on said mount.
eccentric mount for producing relative eccentric movement of said disks and said wheel when rotated, said wheel having apertures and said disks being connected together by studs passing through said apertures.
4. A cigaretterod compressor comprising two disks, a wheel jbetween said disks, and an eccentric mount for producing relative eccentric vmovement of said disks and said compressor wheel. It should be noted that 1. A'cigaretterod compressor comprising .2. I A cigarette rod compressor comprising two disks, a wheel-betweensaid disks, an, eccentric mount for producingirelative eccen-i I ;3.: cigarette rod compressor comprising two disks, a wheel between said disks, and an EL B.
