Abstract

1332689 Cigarette-making machines MOLINS Ltd 14 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970] 49844/70 Heading A2C A ledger for supporting a continuous rod 20, e.g. cigarette or filter rod, whilst it is being cut by a knife 19 comprises a pair of members 2, 4 rotatable about parallel axes 6, 8, and a member 10 pivotally connected to radially adjustable parts 22, 24 on the rotary members and carrying a rod support 16 which is adjustable in height independently of the radially adjustable parts. The support receives the rod in a U-shaped groove and has a slot 18 to accommodate the knife, which may be in the form of part of a helix on a rotary member. The parts 22, 24 are adjustable in grooves 26, 28 by screws (not shown) to vary the crank throws and thereby the lengths into which the rod 20 is cut. Vertical adjustment of the support 16 is effected by packing 30 or by adjustment of a member which carries the shafts 6, 8. Two similar devices may be mounted side-by-side, on either side of the vertical plane through the axis of the rod 20, the supports being 180‹ out of phase so that they come alternately into engagement with the rod. To provide for longer dwell of the support 16 in its upper position the crank throws may be other than parallel, or a cam may be provided for causing a small cyclical vertical movement of one of the rotary members 2, 4. A further embodiment is described in which the rotary members are mounted on opposite sides of the connecting member and are interconnected by a gear drive, and the rod support is adjustably secured to one end of the connecting member.
