BINDING ARRANGEMENT Filed Jan. 5. 1933 U l 5 Douv j INVENTOR'.

Attorney Roger M Lo Patented Aug. 14, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE to Draeger Freres, French company Application January 5,
In France 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to an improved binding arrangement for sheets or leaflets which are either separate or have been already assembled in the form ofblank-books, notebooks or pamphlets. The said binding arrangement is chiefly characterized by the fact that it is selfcontained and intended to remain apparent from the exterior without being associated with an-- other kind of covering, and it comprises a combshaped device, whose teeth form parallel rings or loops, each of which is inserted through the sheets or leaflets by means of perforations which are formed in each sheet or leaflet along one of its edges. Said comb-shaped device may be formed of celluloid or other cellulosic or like material.
In the accompanying by way of example:
Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a sectional view and a perspective view of a binding arrangement according to the invention.
The device for binding the sheets consists of. a comb. which is cut out, by punching or otherwise, from a thin sheet of celluloid or like yielding material. This comb has a plain band 11 and teeth 14.
The cellulose material may be variously colored, and this is a valuable feature for certain highclass pamphlets employed for advertising or like purposes.
The teeth 14 of the comb-shaped element are bent in the form of loops in such manner that the free end of each tooth is brought into contact against the inner side of the plain band 11 of the comb-shaped element and overlaps the edge 13 of said plain band opposite to the edge 12 on which the teeth 14 are attached. With such an arrangement, when the teeth are engaged in the perforations 15 of the sheets or leaflets 16, the plain band 11 of the comb-shaped element will then constitute the apparent back of the bound assemblage and may receive inscriptions or may drawing, which is given Grand Montrouge, France, a

January 19, 1932 be otherwise adorned; the perforations 15 are traversed by smooth portions of the teeth and these perforations may be relatively narrow since they may allow the passage of only one tooth.
The sheets are mounted. in position by tem- 5 porarily opening the loops, without exceeding the elastic limit of the material, for instance by means of a mandrel or the like which is inserted through the said loops. If desired, the ends of the teeth may be cemented or secured to the plain band when the sheets have been put in place; but it is also possible to leave said ends of the teeth merely in contact by elasticity with the inner side of the plain band.
Obviously the said invention is not limited to the form of construction herein described and represented, which is given solely by way of example.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A binding arrangement for sheets provided with perforations along one of their edges comprising a comb-shaped element formed of a plain band and of teeth which extend from one longitudinal edge of said plain band, are bent in the form of rounded loops extending over at least 180 and are adapted to be inserted through the sheet perforations, the free ends of said teeth overlapping the inner edge of the plain band opposite to the edge on which the teeth are attached, the portion of said comb-shaped element'ex'tending out of the set of sheets being quite free and adapted to form an apparent part of the bound assemblage.
2. A binding arrangement according to claim 1 comprising the further feature consisting in that the teeth form with the plain band of the comb -shaped'element closed loops having at every point their convexity directed outwardly.
