IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,814, dated November 6, 1877; application filed September 29, 1877 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARA T. MARTIN, J r., of Waverly, in the county of Bremer andState of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Umbrella-Holders, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved umbrella-holder. Fig. 2 is a top view of the swiveled clasp. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a side view of the double clasp. Fig. 5 is a top view of the same.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the umbrella-holders for which Letters Patent No. 184,882 were granted to me November 28, 1876, so as to make them more convenient and reliable in'use.
The invention consists in the clamp swiveled to the U-bar, in combination with the perforated plate, for holding an umbrella-handle or extension-staffadjustably, and in the double clamp and the extension-staff, in combination with the swiveled clamp and the perforated plate for holding an ordinary umbrella, substantially as herein shown and described.-
A is a circular plate of iron, which is se-' cured to the bottom of the buggy or other carriage, and has a number of holes formed in it to receive the lower end of the handle of an umbrella or of the staff B. O D is a clamp, to receive and hold the umbrella-handle when a long-handled umbrella is used, or the staff B when an ordinaryumbrellais to be used. Upon one end of the bar G of the clasp is formed, or to it is attached, apin, 0, provided with an L- head, which, when the bar 0 has been turned up at right angles with the bar D, can pass through an elongated hole in the end part of the bar D, but cannot pass through when the bar 0 is parallel with the bar D. In the other end of the bar 0 is formed a slot, to receive the hand-screw 0 which screws into a screwhole in the end part of the bar D. The ends of the bar D are swiveled to the ends of the U-bar E, which is secured to a frame attached to'the bottom of the buggy, or to a'bar or plate attached to the seat.
When an ordinary umbrella is to be used,
an extensionstaff, B, is secured in the plate A and swiveled clamp O D, and to its upper end is secured the double clamp F G. The ends of the bars of the part F of the *clasp are secured to each other and the staff B by two screws, f, passing through their ends. The inner bars of the two clamps F G are connected together by a web. The bars of the clamp G are connected together at one end by a hinge, ghand at the other end by a'handscrew, 9
The bars of the double clamp F G may be sion-staff B, in combination with the swiveled clamp C D and the perforated plate A, for holding an ordinary umbrella, substantially as herein shown and described.
