To all whom it may concern: A

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. CASH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to quilting frames and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a quilting frame made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of mounting one of the take-up rollers in the side bar of the quilting frame.

Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the side rails of the quilting frame. Mounted in the ends of said rails 1 and 2 is a roller 3 covered with any suitable material, said roller having a ratchet wheel 4 secured to the outer end thereof and a pawl 5 pivoted to the side rail 2 for engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 4. A similar roller 6 is journaled in the opposite ends of the side rails 1 and 2, and a ratchet wheel 7 011 the end of the shaft of said roller is provided with peripheral ratchet teeth engaged by a pawl 8 pivoted at 9 to the side rail 2. A take-up roller 10 is removably j ournaled in the side rails 1 and 2 by means of a notch 11 in the rail 1 in which is seated the end 12 of the shaft of said roller, and the opposite end of said shaft is seated in a notch 13 in the side rail 2, and said shaft is held in the notch by means of a pivoted or hinged bearing strap 14 hinged at 15 to the top of the rail 2 and provided with a downwardly projecting portion 16 which bears on the top of the shaft 11, the terminal end of said bearing strap being provided with a toe 17 which is engaged by a pivoted latch 18 for holding said bearing strap in position to secure the shaft 11 within the notch- 13. Whenever it is required to -re-' move the roller 10 the bearing strap 14 may be thrown out of the notch by moving the pivoted latch 18 in an obvious manner. On the outer end of the shaft 11 a ratchet wheel 19 is secured and a pawl 20 pivoted to the rail 2 engages the ratchet teeth on said ratchet wheel.

To suspend the quilting frame I provide curved arms 20 one end of each of which is pivoted to the opposite sides of the rails 1 and 2, the opposite end of these arms is secured to the opposite ends of a spreader bar. A bail 21 has its ends secured to said spreader bar and said bail is bent at its central portion upon a wire 27 stretched across a room to permit the quilting frame being shifted to proper position as may be required during the quilting operation.

The side rail 1 may be provided with a hinged section 28 for permitting the roller 3 to be detached therefrom whenever required at one end, and said hinged section being provided with a metal strap a, and the pintle b of the hinge 0 passes through said strap to hinge the section 28 to the section 1, a suitable clip 29 being pivoted to the section 1 to hold said two sections in adjusted position;

From the foregoing it will be obvious that a quilting frame made in accordance with my invention, may be suspended at the required height and moved about in any direction or tilted to present the quilt at the proper position for forming the cross lines of stitching therein.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
