SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,478. dated July 21, 1885. Application filcd May 1, 1885. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, THOMAS O. POTTER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in explaining its nature.

In an application of even date herewith (Serial No. 164,124) I have described a device for supporting pantaloons and other simi' lar articles,adapted to form a part of shoulderbraces or suspenders, which consists, essentially, of abar, rod, or support having pr0-. jecting downward therefrom devices for attaching the waistband thereto, which devices consist, essentially, of two arms or supports bearing a screw adapted to be moved through the waistband and to be supported by both This invention has the same purpose or object as that, but it varies somewhat in the attaching devices, as will hereinafter be more fully described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of suspenders or braces showing the use or application of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the suspenders or braces, also showing a part of the waistband attached thereto and representing in enlarged elevation the fastening device which is the subject-matter of this application. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the portion of the suspenders or braces shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section upon the linear a: of Fig. 1, showing the construction of the fastening. Fig. dis a view thereof in perspective. Fig. 6 is a vertical central section illustrating the use of the fastening. Fig. 7 is a view of a modification.

A A are the side frames, rods, bars, or supports. From them depend the plates a, each of which has projecting inward from its inner surface the hook a, the end a of which is curved upward, as shown. These hooks are adapted to be inserted through the material of the waistband, and each of their ends is covered or protected by the swinging plate of, each of which is pivoted at at to the portion a? of the plate which projects downward, and has a groove or cavity, a, for receivingthe end a of the point. This plate is also provided with the inclined surfaces a, extending from the cavity a outward, so that upon closing the same one of these surfaces shall ride upon the end of the hook and serve to guide the hook on the under surface of the plate to the cavity.
