-|MPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR COLTER S AND PLOW-STANDARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,38 5, dated October 23, 1877; application filed J unc 11, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS FIND- LEY PORTER, of Booneville, in the county of standard to a plow-beam, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, easily applied to any kind of aplow, and which shall be cheaply manufactured, not liable to breakor get out of order, and will hold the colter or standard firmly and securely in place, and enable it to be adjusted as maybe required.
The invention consists in the combination of the slotted lower plate, the notched upper plate, having its forward end bent upward,
the bolt, and the hook-rod and its nut, with a plow-beam, and with the notched shank of a colter or plowstandard, as hereinafter fully described.
I will describe the device as applied for holding a colter; but it is equally applicable for holding an iron plow-standard.
A is a plow-beam, upon the under side of which is placed a plate B, and upon its upper side is placed a plate, The plates B O are made wider than the beam A, and are secured to said beam by a bolt, D.
In the plate B are formed two slots, and in the rear end of the plate 0 are formed two notches to receive the colter E. One of the slots and notches of the plates B O is directly over the center of the beam A, and in line with a slot formed through said beam. The other slot and notch is upon the land-side side of the beam A.
In the forward edge of the shank of the colter E are formed a number of notches to receive the plate 0 at the end of its notches, to enable the colterto be adjusted higher or lower, and to prevent it from slipping down or up after being adjusted.
F is a rod, upon the rear end of which is formed a hook to hook upon the rear edge of the colter E. The forward end of the rod F passes through a hole in the turned-up forward end 0 of the plate 0, and has a screw-thread out upon it to receive the hand-nut f.
By this construction, by loosening the nut f, the colter may be moved back to free its notch from the plate 0, and may then be raised or lowered, as desired, and when adjusted it may be locked firmly in place by again tightening up the said nut f.
Several holes are formed in the plate 0 to receive the bolt D, so that the said plate may be adjusted to regulate the pitch of the colter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the slotted plate B, the notched plate 0, having its forward end a bent upward, the bolt D, and the hook-rod F and its nut f, with a plow-beam, and with the notched shank of a' colter or plow-standard, substantially as herein shown and described.
