Description
Pulley-Blook.
NPERS, PHQTOJJTHOGRPHEF, WASHINGTON D O UNITED S'I'A'I'Es PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES B. BRISTOL, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNEOTIOUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PULLEY-B LOCKS.
Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 196,187, (lated October 16, 1877; application filed September 11, 1877.
To all 'whom it may concem Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BRIs'roL, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Pulley-Blocks and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connectionwith the accompanying` drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitnte part of this specification, and represent, in-
Fignre l, side view; Fig'. 2, edge view; Fig. 3, Vertical section on line X X.
This inv'ention relates to an improvement in pulley-blocks, such as are designed to be attached in places where the block' is liable to swing or be turned into various positions, and which, with an open hook, would be frequently disengaged.
The object of this invention is to constrnct the block so that such disengagement is impossible; and it consists in combining` with the pulley-block and rigid hook a closing` device, which Will automatically act to close the month of the hook, and maintain that closed condition initil mechanically opened.
A represents the block, formed With a hook, B, as a stationary or 'Permanent part of the block. Vithin the block one or more pnlleys, O, is arranged, in the usual manner.
As here represented, the closing` device is a bolt, D, arranged in a seat in the block in the plane of the hook, and with a spring, a, tending to throw the bolt ontward, so that it will extend across the month of the hook, as seen in Fig'. 1. rllhis is the normal condition of the bolt. Through the sides of the block a slot, d, is made, and through these slots a projection, e, on each side of the bolt extends, as seen in Fig's. 2 and 3, to serve as convenient means for drawing' the bolt, as indicated in Fig. 1, to open the month of the hook.
By this construction the month of the hook is secnrely closed, and so that it cannot be detached without mechanically moving the bolt.
While the bolt, as here shown, is believed to be the best method for closing` the month of the hook, equivalent devices may bc made which will accomplish the same purpose that is to say, to automatically close the month of the hook.
I claim-- In combination with a pulley-block and the hook rig'idly attached thereto, or made a part thereof, a mechanism, snbstantially such as described, to automatically close the month of the hook, and snbstantially as specified.
' OHAS. B. BRISTOL.
