3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in cosmetic compacts and more particularly to a compact which is provided with moistening elements.
A broad object of the invention is provision of tioned brush.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a compact having a novel construction whereby the elements aforementioned have unique and space saving arrangement.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a compact having small dimensions to enable the same to be carried in the ordinary purse.
These objects and other incidental features of the invention will be brought out in the following disclosure wherein the accompanying drawing forms a part thereof and wherein like reference characters on the said drawing represent corresponding parts views.
throughout the several Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing a preferred form of a compact in open and operative position;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lower portion of the compact shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional View through the line 3-3 of Figure 2 and through the upper portion 1 of the compact;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View through line 4-4 of Figure 2 and through the upper portion 1 of the compact.
In the drawing the compact comprises an upper portion 1 pivotally connected at 16 to lower portion 2, the side walls of the said portions being perpendicular to the upper and lower faces of the said two portions.
1 and 2 comprise the compact case proper, the side walls of the same offering sufficient height for the reception and enclosure of the elements hereinafter to be described. 17 represents a spring catch mechanism employed in the opening of compact cases of the variety shown the usual and closing which is in Figure l of the accompanying drawing, it being deemed unnecessary to show the cooperating notch with spring catch 17 on the front wall of the upper portion 1 of the compact case. 3 represents a flat mirror which is affixed in any known fashion to the inner face of upper portion 1 and is used for the usual The compact case thus erably rectangular in shape, it
purposes. far described is prefbeing understood tangular body with an upper Y., a corporation of that the shape of the compact case is not of the essence of the invention. The external portions of the compact case may be enameled, engraved or otherwise decorated for the usual aesthetic reasons.
4 represents an intermediate base plate engaging the side walls of lower portion 2 at the peripheral and turned down edges thereof, as shown in Figures 3 and 4 by reference numeral 18. Intermediate base plate 4 consequently is in spaced relation with respect to the upper face of lower portion 2 of the compact case. 5 represents a casing for any cosmetic cake material, such as mascara, which said material requires for application a moistened brush. Casing 5 is adapted to rest on the upper face of lower portion 2 by penetrating intermediate base plate 4 through an opening conforming to the peripheral shape of easing 5. Casing 5 preferably comprises a continuous side wall, the shape of the said casing being of any desirable form but preferably rectangular. The upper edge of casing 5 isturned in at any desired curvature, such as that shown by a reference to numeral 19 in Figure 4, showing case '7 hereinafter to be described. 6 represents a cake of cosmetic material, such as mascara, which is encased in casing 5, and which is removable when worn down for replenishing purposes.
'7 represents a holder for a moistening element, such as sponge 9, and comprises preferably 2. recfacing having an opening 8 and continuous side walls as shown in Figure 1. Holder '1 is supported by the upper face of lower portion 2 through an opening in intermediate base plate 4 conforming to the peripheral shape of holder '7. Opening 8 on the face of holder 7 is preferably diagonal in shape and exposes a face of the within contained sponge 9, the latter offering the moistening requirements for the use of mascara cake 6. Casing 5 and holder '7 are arranged preferably in longitudinal alignment and adjacent to the rear and side walls of lower portion 2 for space conservation, all as preferably represented in Figure l of the accom- 1 0 panying drawing.
10 represents the handle of an application brush, comprising head 11 and bristle portions 12. 13 is a casing for the upper portion of the application brush, the said casing comprising a front 0 wall 14, an end and outer wall 20, and upper and lower walls 21. 15 is an inclined resilient tongue member attached at its inner end to the lower edge of end and outer wall 20 and penetrates intermediate base plate 4 in a transverse slit 11 with its outer free end bearing against the tom of lower portion 2 (Fig. 3), said tongue ber being adapted to give casing 13 vertical movement so that handle 10 of the application brush is normally at an acute angle with respect to intermediate base plate 4. The purpose of tongue member 15 in association with casing 13 is toward ofiering easy insertion and removal of the application brush, as becomes apparent from a reference to Figure 1. Casing 13 is preferably positioned adjacent to the front and outer walls of lower portion 2 for space conservation.
The compact case itself may be made of any metallic or non-metallic material, the same being true for casing 6, holder 7, casing 13 and intermediate base plate 4; but in the present preferred embodiment of the invention, metal has been chosen. Respecting the relative placement of the several parts of the structure, the present embodiment is aimed toward compactness and facility of use; and for such reason elements 5, '7 and 13 have been positioned as represented in the accompanying drawing. The invention proper comprises a compact case provided with a casing for a cosmetic cake material, a holder for a moistener, such as a sponge and a casing for the head of application brush.
The present structure has an advantage over present compact cases in that the same is provided with a moistener which eliminates the necessity of the need for proximity to a source of water supply, where the cosmetic material requires water for its application. In addition casing 13 affords a sanitary advantage. The bristle portions of the application brush are protected against contamination by other extraneous matters contained within the compact case.
The user of the present structure need but saturate sponge 6 each morning so that there will be at least one days supply of water for the application brush in conjunction with the mascara or other material, the latter requiring the use of water for its application.
We wish it understood that minor changes,
bot-
mem-
variations in the structure, location, size, and shape of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention nor departing from the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a compact case, comprising an upper cover portion, a lower body portion in hinged connection therewith, an intermediate base plate in said lower body portion, a brush casing provided with a resilient tongue, said tongue extending from said brush casing and having its outer end free, and said outer free end bearing against said lower body portion, whereby when said upper cover portion is opened, said tongue will raise the outer end of said brush casing.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a compact case, comprising an upper cover portion, a lower body portion in hinged connection therewith, an intermediate base plate in and spaced between its marginal edges from said lower body portion, a brush casing provided on its inner end with an inclined resilient tongue, and said tongue extending through said base plate and downwardly with its outer free end always bearing against the inner face of the bottom of said lower body portion, whereby when said cover portion is opened, said tongue will raise the outer end of said brush casing.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a compact case comprising a casing provided with a hinged cover, a base plate of the same size as the interior of said casing and spaced from its bottom, a brush casing provided with an integral tongue extending through said base plate and spaced away from said base plate the greater part of the length of said tongue, and the outer end of said tongue always engaging the bottom of said first mentioned casing, whereby the flexing strain at the point of juncture of said tongue and brush casing is reduced to a minimum.
