IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR TRANSPORTING LIQUIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,083, dated October 16, 1877; application filed September 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GRAVES, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Cans for Transporting Liquids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the'annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a broken section of the side of the can, showing one of the conical trunnions.
This invention is designed as an improvement upon my patent for box or casing for cans used for oil and other liquids, bearing date May 22, 1877, and numbering 191,047 and consists of a box or case so arranged as to separate at the center, on two sides, dividing the easing into two sections, the sides of the lower section having semicircular bearings to support the trunnions upon the sides of the can,while the upper section of the casingforms a bench or stand to elevate the lower section and canwhen drawing off the oil or other liquid therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the lower section of a protecting-case, of any desired size, and is designed for holding and supporting oil or other cans.
The section A is formed with a suitable base, to which is secured sides a b, the sides a projecting nearly to the top of the box when the two parts or sections are placed together. Both the sides a b have semicircular bearings o (I, to support the conical-shaped trunnions B upon the sides of the can 0.
The upper section or part D of the casing has a top, 0, slotted to allow handle f of the can to pass through, when the two sections are locked together.
Secured to the sides of the top care stripsg and sides h, the latter corresponding inlength to the sides I) of the lower section A, and have corresponding semicircular bearings i.
The can 0 is provided with the usual nozzle j and cap k. V
Upon the sides a are secured pivot-hooks l,
which engage with eyes or loops m upon the lower edge of the strips g of the section D, to lock the two sections together, when it is desired to pack the can for transportation.
It will be seen that when the two sections are together they form a complete box or packing-case, the long sides aforming the two complete sides of the box, while the parts I) h, when together, form the other sides.
When it is desired to use the can, the hooks are disconnected with the eyes or loops, and the upper section removed. The can is then lifted by the handle out of the lower section or case, and turned one quarter around, after which it is lowered into position, so that the trunnions on the side of the can will drop into the semicircular notches or bearings at the top of the side pieces a.
After the spout is opened and vent given at the screw-cap, the can is then swung forward, and the liquid will freely fiow.
The upper section may be used as a bench or stool, when required to elevate the can.
It will be seen by this construction that all kinds of liquids may be securely transported and easily handled, and the conical trunnions, secured to the sides of the can to support the same, possess the advantages both of holding the side pieces of the lower section or case to theirplaces, and preventin the bulge of the can when filled from spreading the sides of the case apart.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Abox or case for oil or other cans, formed of two sections, separated at the center on two of its sides, the sides of the lower section thereof having bearings to support the trunnions upon the sides of the can, the up per section, when separated from the lower one, being capable of use as a bench or stand to elevate the lower section and can,when in use, as specified.
