Application January 8, 1932, Serial No. 585,509
2 Claims. '(01. 131-52) Our improvements relate to cigarette construction wherein we form an encom jacket, or
- sheath, for the essential smoking 1 elements, the mouth end of which jacket is rendered water 6 proof in advance of the manufacturing of the cigarette. This may be accomplished by impregnating the jacket at the mouthend with water proofing and water repellant material, or the waterproofing may be accomplished by plac- IO ing a waterproof tip about the mouth end of the cigarette.
One of the objects of our invention consists in providing a cigarette that will be'more delicious to the smoker. I lli A further object of our invention consists in providing a cigarette that will remain in shape at its mouthpiece throughout its smoking life. A still further object of our invention consists in providing a cigarette whose major portion may be smoked closer to the end that is placed in the mouth of the smoker.
A still fiu'ther object of our invention consists in providing a cigarette that may be smoked by women with freedom from lipstick disturbance i or removal.
A still further object of our invention consists; in providing a cigarette thatwill be automatically extinguished when smoked .to the waterproofed encompassing end of the sheath of the same. a
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of'parts, the esaential elements .of which are set forth in the ap- I pended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter shown with refstones to the drawing which accompanies and forms a. part of this specification.
In the drawing:
of the completed cigarette.
Fig. 2 is a side view, of the completed cigarette. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, sectional, side view, of the completed cigarette.
.31 Fig. 41s a perspective view, of'the outside of the wrapper,or sheath that is to encompass the that isto form the cigarette. In this view an offset is formed .inothe' jacket to aecommothte the water proofed strip that is :so t besecnred thereto mount is to water proof end of the cigarette. 5 is a side view, of the cigarette made from the on jacket as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective, end view, of the cigaretteaheetb. or am that is formed of two independent materials and that are together at their meeting edges to form a sheath of uniform thickness and lying in a common plane. A sheath may be made as illustrated in Fig. 6 wherein the material'adjacent one edge is permeated, or impregnated with a water proofing material to render the same water proof.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views. 1 is the body of the cigarette, and 2 is an" encompassing water proof jacket thatis placed about the outer surface of the cigarette and at the smoking, or'mouth end of the cigarette. The encompassing sheath is preferably made from a. tasteless water proof material that may be formed independently of, or integral with the original wrapper, or sheath of the cigarette. The same may bemade of inexpensive water proof or antiseptic material which will be safe and pleasant to the taste of the smoker. It may 76, be made transparent,-translucent, or opaque, and of any suitable material for this purpose -ascellophane. The water proofing jacket 2 may be placed about the mouth end of the cigarette. The encompassing water proof 'jacket may be made of the same material as the cigarette sheath,-- or of different material and would look and be similar to the cigarette, as illustrated a in 1 to 3 inclusive, so that the cigarette would be actually larger in diameter at the mouth end than it would be at the lighting end of the cigarette.
The material from which theencompassing jacket may be made is illustrated in Fig. 4, wherein the primary body 3 of the cigarette sheath has an offset 4 formed therein so that the outer surface 5 of the primary body of the sheath and the outer. surface 6 beyond the oil.- set would not be lying-ina common plane. The offset 6 being of sufficient depth only to accommodate the thickness of the sheet of water proofed material 7 that is to be placed about the outer surface of the cigarette at the mouth end of the cigarette. The width of-the water proofed strip '7 is suilicient only to overlie that portion of the cigarette that becomes normally mois-' tened from contact with the lips of the smoker.
I The cigarette m also be encompassed inan jacket made as illustrated in Fig. ,6 and when so made the primary portion 8 of the cigarette sheath maybe made of material now in common use for' that purpose and the water proofed end 9 of the cigarette may be made of any suitable water proofed material that will'be either' taste less. or impregnated. or coated with a material at their meeting edges 10, as by being glued toather.
Imaywishtomaketheenco material of a single piece and impregnate the portion 9 of the encompassing sheath with a water repellant, or a water proofing material.
A cigarette thus made and coated, if made of the proper material, is non-expansive and will hold tobacco in the mouth engaging end of the cigarette in mm position and will prevent the moistening of the tobacco disposed in that portion of the cigarette from saliva that causes the tobacco to swell and which thereby retards the draft of air passing through the cigarette to thereby cause the cigarette to burn slower.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that a is not intended to confine the memoir to the one form of embodiment herein shown and described, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within claims which follow.
What we claimis:
1. A cigarette paperfo'r forming a cigarette, comprising an offset portion, a strip of -waterproofed material positioned within the offset portion and adapted to be rolled with the paper the scope'of the in the manufacture of the cigarette to form a mouthpiece therefor.
2. A cigarette paper for forming a cigarette, comprising an oflset portion adapted to receive a strip of waterproofed material so that in the final rolling of the cigarette, the oflset portion will cause a tighter packing of the tobacco within the mouthpiece portion of the cigarette.
