4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair combs and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel constr'ction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which any desired fluid may be conveniently applied to the hair and scalp.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a comb or" the aforementioned character embodying a collapsible bulb constituting a reservoir for the fluid, together with novel means for securing said bulb in position.
(Ether objects of the invention are to provide .a comb of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of he foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters or reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
igure 1 is a View in verti al longitudinal section through a comb constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in longitudinal section through the outer end portion of the comb, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail view in horizontal section through one of the teeth, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a View in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises asubstantiaiiy semi-elliptical handle 1 of suitable material having formed integrally with its outer end a cone 2 which encloses a bushing 3. Anchored in the bushing 3 and projecting outwardly b yond the free end of the cone 2 is a tube 4 which is closed at its outer end, as at 5. Fixed in openings provided therefor in the tube 4 is a series of hollow teeth 6, said teeth communicating with the tube for receiving fluid therefrom. The teeth 6 are tapered and closed at their free ends, as at 7. Further, the teeth 6 are open on their upper sides Edmondc A. Maselli, West New Brighton, N. Y.
Application July 15, 1933, Serial No. 680,628
to provide outlet slots 8. This is illustrated to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing. Projecting from the tube 4 at an acute angle relative to the teeth 6 and adjacent the slots 8 in said teeth 6 is a shield 9, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
The handle 1 is shaped to accommodate a collapsible rubber bulb 16 which constitutes a. reservoir for the fluid. Projecting from one end of the collapsible bulb 10 is a tapered nipple 11 for engagement in the tube 4, the inner end portion of said tube being internally tapered to provide a seat for the nipple. Projecting from the outer end of the handle 1 is a substantially segmental neck 12 for the reception of the usual protuberance 13 on the outer end of the collapsible bulb 10. The reference numeral 14 designates a retaining yoke which is mounted for swinging movement on the neck 12 and which is engageable with the protuberance 13 for securing the outer end of the collapsible bulb 10 in position. The retaining yoke 14 includes a lip 15 for engagement by a thumb or finger for actuating said yoke.
In use, the handle 1 is held in the hand in such a manner that the outlet slots 8 in the teeth 6 and the shield 9 are uppermost as the comb is drawn through the hair. The desired quantity or fluid may be expelled from the collapsible bulb 10 for application to the hair and scalp by pressing inwardly on the exposed portion of said bulb, preferably with the thumb of the hand in which the comb is being held. As the comb is drawn through the hair, the shield 9 prevents fluid which is expelled from flowing over the tube 4, the excess fluid collecting beneath said shield at the tube 4. To remove the collapsible bulb 10 for any purpose, as for refilling, it is only necessary to swing the retaining yoke 14 outwardly to inoperative position, thus permitting the outer end of said bulb to be swung outwardly from the handle 1, after which the nippie 11 may be withdrawn from the tube 4.
I is believed that the many advantages of a comb constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A comb comprising a tube, means for injecting a fluid into said tube, hollow teeth mounted on the tube and communicating therewith for receiving the fluid therefrom, said teeth having outlet openings in one side thereof, and a shield mounted on the tube adjacent said one side of the teeth.
2. A comb comprising a handle, a cone projecting from one end of the handle, a tube mounted in the cone and projecting beyond the free end thereof, a collapsible bulb mounted in the handle and communicating with the tube, said bulb constituting a fluid reservoir, a series of hollow teeth mounted on the tube and communicating therewith for receiving fluid therefrom, said teeth having outlet slots in one side thereof, and a shield mounted longitudinally on the tube and projecting therefrom at an acute angle relative to the teeth adjacent said one side of said teeth.
3. A comb comprising a substantially semielliptical handle, an integral cone projecting from one end of the handle, a bushing in the cone, a tube fixed in the bushing and projecting longitudinally beyond the free end of the cone, said tube being closed at its outer end, a series of hollow teeth mounted on the tube and communicating therewith for receiving fluid therefrom, said teeth having outlet slots in one side, a shield mounted longitudinally on the tube and projecting therefrom at an acute angle relative .to the teeth, said shield being adjacent said one side of the teeth, a collapsible bulb, constituting a fluid reservoir, mounted in the handle, a nipple projecting from one end of the bulb and engaged in the tube, and means on the other end of the handle for releasably securing the bulb in said handle.
4. A comb comprising a substantially semi-elliptical handle, an integral cone projecting from one end of the handle, a bushing in the cone, a tube fixed in the bushing and projecting longitudinally beyond the free end of the cone, said tube being closed at its outer end, a series of hollow teeth mounted on the tube and communicating therewith for receiving fluid therefrom, said teeth having outlet slots in one side, a shield mounted longitudinally on the tube and projecting therefrom at an acute angle relative to the teeth, said shield being adjacent said one side of the teeth, a collapsible bulb, constituting a fluid reservoir, mounted in the handle, a nipple projecting from one end of the bulb and engaged in the tube, and means on the other end of the handle for releasably securing the bulb in said handle, said means including a protuberance on the bulb, a substantially segmental neck on the handle for the reception of the protuberance, and a retaining yoke mounted for swinging movement on the neck and engageable over the protuberance.
