Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
JOSEPH L. MAJOR, OF MANISTEE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS FOR MARKING LOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,624, dated September 25, 1877 application filed June 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. MAJOR, of Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Saw-Log Stampers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a part-sectional top View of my saw-log stamper, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and. arrangement of a device for stamping saw-logs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
My log-stamper consists ofa solid cast-metal wheel, A, having a central square eye, and provided with ten radial arms, B B, of any suitable length, and at equal distances apart. These arms are cast with and form an integral part of the wheel.
The outer ends of the arms B are enlarged, and on the enlarged endsor, in other words, on the periphery of said arms-are formed raised reversed figures 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0, so that if either one of said arms is struck with its end down on a log the proper corresponding number is shown sunk into the log.
O represents the handle, which is inserted in the eye of the wheel A, and fastened by means of metal wedges a a, substantially as shown, so as to be solid in the wheel. On the rear side of each arm B is painted or otherwise affixed the number corresponding with the reversed figure on the end of the arm, in order to save time and labor by looking at the side figures instead of at those on the ends of the arms.
This device is to be used as a hammer to stamp the number of feet of lumber contained in a saw-log on the end of such log, and it is easily revolved in the hand to bring the desired arm of the wheel into play.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described device for stamping saw-logs, consisting of the wheel A, with radial arms B, having numbers on their side, and raised reversed numbers on their ends, the wheel being secured on a handle, 0, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH L. MAJOR.
