SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,982, dated November 26, 1889.

Be it known that we, LOUIS I-I. SOLON and JOHN MGMAHON, of Mendota, in the county of ALa Salle, and in the State of Illinois, have -invented certain new and useful Improve' ments in Registers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to registers for machines forhandling grain and other material; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the casing of our device, this casing being provided with ears b, by which it may be secured to any suitable support.
As best shown in Fig. 8, the front side piece B of the casing is made detachable and provided at its lower end with a. slot c, through v which the registration may be observed.
Journaled to the front and rear side pieces of the casing A is an arbor D, and rigidly connected to this arbor is a disk E, provided upon its outer face with pins d and nunierf ical characters, the latter being serially arranged to read from 0 to 9, inclusive. A ratchet-Wheel Fis loosely arranged on the arbor D, and another ratchet-wheel G is fast Keyed to the ratchet-wheel F is another disk II, that runs loose on the hub c of the disk E,and loose on the hub f of disk H is another disk I, the latterbeing provided with ratchet-teeth g and an annular track h, this track having a single notch t', as is best illustrated in Fig. 2, and each of said disks H I are recessed to receive the disk adjacent thereto, whereby the out-er faces of all the disks are flush with each other, as is best illustrated in Fig. 3. Like the disk E the disks H I have their outer faces provided with numerical characters serially arranged from O to 9, inclusive, and in addition to said characters the latter disk is provided. with Serial No. 304,507. Secured to the interior of the casing A are flat springs m o, that respectively engage with the ratchet-teeth on the disk I and wheel G, as is best illustrated in Fig. 2, these springs serving as stops to prevent the rotation of said wheel and disk in a reverse direction, and a similar spring 7e' engages with the wheel F.
The front side piece B of the casing A is held in place by screw-bolts n p, and loosely arranged on the former one of these screwbolts is the hub r of a lever J, the latter being extended out through a' slot s in said casing, as is best illustrated in Fig.
Pivotally connected to one side of the lever J is a pawl K, that engages with the ratchetteeth g on disk I, and another pawl L is pivoted to the other side of said lever to normally rest upon the track h on said disk.
Springs M N are secured to the casing to bear upon the pawls K L and hold the latter down to their work, as is best illustrated in Fig 2.
Pivoted to the outer face of the disk H is a lever P, arranged to have one end thereof in the path ofthe pins d on the disk E and its other end in the path of an inclined lug t on the interior of the casing A, this lug being best illustrated in Fig. 1.
In practice, when the lever l is actuated, the disk I is intermittingly rotated by the en` gagement of the pawl K with the ratchetteeth g, and the indentations j alternate with the numerical characters on said disk in appearing at the slot c in the front side piece B of the casing A, said indent-ations representing halves of quantities represented by said numerical characters. The disk I is the unitdisk, and during its rotation to successively expose the several characters or marks there on the pawl L rests on the track h until the notch t reaches said pawl. At this time the pawl L drops into the notch and also engages with the ratchet-wheel F, and consequently the next time the lever J is actuated the tens-disk is partially rotated to bring a succeeding one of the characters thereon into line with the slot c in the front piece of the casing ot our device, this operation being si- IOO mnltaneous with the completion of a rotation by the units-disk. The tens-disk being about to finish a rotation, one end of the lever P will come against the inclined lug t, and consequently, this lever being swung on its pivot, its other end Will exert a pressure on the adjacent oneI of the pins d on disk E to impart a partial rotation to the latter and thereby bring a successive one of its characters into view, this disk being the hundreds-disk.
Vhile we have shown an indentation j between each two of the numerical characters 011 the units-disk I, we may employ some other marks for the same purpose, or these marks may be multiplied or entirely dispensed with, the ratchet-teeth g on said disk being correspondingly increased ordecreased. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim asv new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A register comprising a casing provided with an observation-slot, an arbor journaled in the casing, a hundreds-disk rigid on the arbor and a ratchet-Wheel loose on said arbor, a tens-disk keyed to the ratchet-Wheel, a units-disk loose on the hub of the tens-disk, a series of ratchet-teeth and a notched track carried by the units-disk, an oscillating lever having its bearing in the casing and extended out through a slo't therein, a pawl pivoted to the lever to engage said ratchet-teeth, an-
other pawl pivoted to said lever to normallyv rest upon said track, pins on the hundredsdisk, a lug on the casing, and a lever pivoted to the tens-disk to have one of its ends in the path of said pins and its other end in the v path of said lug, substantially as set forth.
2. A register comprising a casing provided with avslotted side piece, an arbor journaled in the sides of the casing, a hundreds-disk and ratchet-wheel tast on the arbor, another ratchet-wheel loose on said arbor, spring-stops secured to the casing and arranged to engage said ratchet-wheels, a tens-disk keyed to the loose ratchet-Wheel, a units-disk loose on the hub of the tens-disk and provided with a Series ot ratchet-teeth and notched track, an oscillating lever having its bearing in the casing and extended out through a slot therein, a pawl pivoted to the lever to engage said ratchet-teeth; another pawl pivoted to said lever to normally rest upon said track, springs arranged to hold said pawls in their working position', pins on the hundreds-disk, a lug on the casing, and a lever pivoted to the tensdisk to have one of its ends in the path of said pins and its other end in the path of said lug, substantially as set forth.
3. A register comprising a casing,- a series of three disks nested one into the other and supported by an arbor within the casing, a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for actuating two of said disks, a pivoted lever carried by one of the latter disks, pins arranged on the remaining one of the three disks to come in the path of one end of the lever, and a lug on said casing arranged in the path ofI the other end of said lever1 substantially as set forth.
