.J. c. LEcUoNA POLISHING DEVICE Filed Oct. 4, 1952 Gttorneg.
Patented Feo. 20, i934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in polishing devices and has particular reference to a device for polishing shoes.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a device which will polish shoes in the manner similar to that now accomplished by the ordinary boot-black, using a brush and a cloth.
A further object is to produce a device which is easily handled and one which may be employed at the usual boot-black stand.
A still further object is to produce a device which is economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my device,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail View of the cloth fastening means.
In polishing shoes it is common to employ a brush or a piece of cloth which is rapidly moved over the surface to be polished in order to secure a glossy effect. This brushing and polishing effects a friction and consequently heat, which produces a much better gloss than if the polisher is dilatory in the manner in which he performs the function. Applicant has therefore devised a machine which is very rapid and consequently a great deal of friction will be generated and an excellent polish obtained.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a casing having a handle 6 secured thereto and also a flexible shaft 7. This flexible shaft carries a gear 8 which meshes with a gear 9 carried upon a shaft l1 mounted in a bearing 12. A disc 13 is secured to the opposite end of the shaft 11 from the gear 9. Both the gear and the disc have wrist pins 14 positioned therein and eccentrically mounted with respect to the axis of the shaft 1l. To these wrist pins is secured a yoke 16 which is engaged by upstanding brackets 17 mounted upon a slider 18. The slider 18 carries rollers 19 and 21, the roller 19 being fixed and provided with hooks 22 while the roller 21 is rotatable and provided with hooks 23. The roller l21 has a ratchet 24 secured thereto and is also provided with a key 26, which extends through the housing 5 to a point outside thereto (see Fig. 3). A spring pressed dog 27 engages the ratchet 24, the purpose of which will be later seen. The slider 18 moves between the bottom plate of the casing and guide plates 28. Rollers 29 and 31 are positioned beneath the bottom of the casing 5 so that a cloth 32 may be passed thereover. This cloth has one end secured to the hooks 23, after which it is passed over the roller 29 and roller 3l and has its opposite ends connected to the hooks 23 of the roller 21.
By now rotating the key 26, the cloth may be adjusted so that it is suiiiciently loose to allow for variations in length due to the reciprocation of its supports 19 and 2l, With reference to the rollers 29 and 31. The adjustment of the cloth is maintained by the dog 27 which engages the ratchet 24. When the exible shaft 7 is rotated motion Will be transmitted through the gear 8 to the gear 9 and shaft 11 to disc 13. As the gear 9 and disc 13 are both connected to the yoke it will be apparent that rotary motion of these parts Will cause reciprocating motion of the slider 18 and consequently the cloth 32 will be rapidly V80 moved back and forth as indicated by the arrows of Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a device which will accomplish all the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoned claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claimt- In a device of the character described, a casing, a reciprocating slide carried on said casing, a pair of arms depending from said casing, a pair of rollers carried by said arms, a pair of rollers secured to said slide, a polishing element extending between said rollers and having its ends attached to said rollers and passed over the rollers secured to said casing, and means for rotating one of said rollers on said slide whereby the polishing element may be stretched between said rollers on said slide and over said rollers carried by said arms.
