0. H. SULLIVAN KNIFE CLEANER AND POLISHER Filed Feb. 1, 1922 Patented Mar. 2?, i923.
hill? CHARLES H. SULLIVAN, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
KNIFE CLEANER AND POLISHER.
Application filed February 1, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Cleaners and Polishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knife cleaners, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and efficient device for quickly cleaning and polishing knives of any size or kind.
The invention consists of the novel con struction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accom )anying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line l-et of Figure 1.
vFigure 4: is a plan view of one of the felt polishing and. cleaning disks.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the metal disks, between which the felt disks are held, and showing the serrated face of same.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views. 1 designates a metal case having an annular flange 2 at its lower edge provided with apertures 8 through which screws, or other fastening means, pass to hold the device to a. table or other convenient place. The said case 1 is provided with slots 7 the purpose of which will hereinafter more fully appear. The shaft 8 has its lower end resting in the boss 4, and is adapted to revolve therein, and its upper end projecting through the cover The said. cover '5 is provided with an annular flange 6 to hold it thereon when the shaft 8 is revolved. The upper end of the shaft 8 is provided with a handle 9 by means of which the said shaft is revolved. The shaft 8 is provided with a collar 10 and is square for a short distance above said collar. The metal disks 12 fit over the shaft 8 and have a square aperture 13 which fits the square portion of the said shaft 8 so that the said. disks 12 will be revolved with said shaft when the latter is operated by the han- Serial No. 533,163.
dle 9. The felt disks 1% also have square apertures 15 which fit the square portion 11 of the shaft 8, and are held between the metal disks 12 in longitudinal alignment with the slots 7. The lower metal disk 12 rests on the collar 10 and the weight of the upper metal disk 12 holds the felt disks 14: together. The faces of the disks 12 next to the felt disks 1% are serrated, which causes the disks 1% to revolve with the disks 12. ll hen it is desired to change the felt disks 1% or to remove the disks for any other reason, the handle 9'is removed from the shaft 8 and the cover 5 lifted from the case. The said shaft 8 is then lifted from the case 1 and the disks slipped over the upper end of said shaft. Emery or other cleaning and polishing material may be used between the disks 1% if desired.
The operation of the device is as follows:
A knife is inserted through the apertures 7 and projects between the felt disks 14, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. The said slots 7 are out of line with the shaft 8 so that the knife will not strike said shaft. The handle 9 is then turned causing the disks 12 and 1 1 to be revolved therewith, and cleaning and polishing the blade of the knife on both sides. The said knife being cleaned and polished is moved back and forth in said slots 7 between the disks It so that it can be cleaned and polished the entire length of the blade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A knife cleaner comprising a case l tving a flanged lower end and slots in opposite sides thereof, an integral recessed boss within said case and. projecting upwardly from the bottom thereof, a shaft having a square upper portion and a rounded lower portion resting in the recess of said boss and adapted to revolve therein, a collar on said shaft between the square and rounded portion of said shaft and adapted to revolve therewith, metal disks mounted on the square portion of said shaft and revoluble therewith, felt disks mounted. on said square portion of said shaft between the said metal disks and in longitudinal alignment with the slots in the side of said case, means for revolving said shaft, and a removable cover for said case having a flange on its lower surface adapted to fit within said case.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' CHARLES H. SULLIVAN.
