ATTACHMENT FOR VACUUM CLEANERS.

The invention relates to vacuum cleaners of the class used in households for cleaning purposes and has for its'object to provide a novel and simple attachment constructed and arranged to polish floors and the like in an efficient manner and with a minimum of manual exertion on the part of the operator of the vacuum cleaner. Other more specifi: objects will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows an example of the invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is a plan view showing one face of the attachment; Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view showing the opposite face thereof; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the attachment in position upon a vacuum cleaner and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary exterior view thereof.
As shown in the drawings the attachment comprises a supporting plate or member 5 of metal or other suitable material said plate being tapered from its front edge toward its rear edge as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 or being otherwise jconstructed to properly fit the vacuum cleaner for which it is designed; in any case, the plate 5 is relatively heavy and accordingly is constructed either of a material having the desired weight or otherwise to produce the same result. Upon its lower face the plate 5 is provided with a facing 6 of felt or other material possessing the desired properties,said facing 6 constituting a polishing pad and being secured in place in any convenient manner as by means of rivets 7; the latter may be of such a type as to permit the facing 6 to be readily disconnected from the plate 5 when for instance, the substitution of a new facing is desired. In the illustrated example the facing 6 extends outwardly in all directions beyond the peripheral edges of the plate 5, as shown in Fig. 1. so that said facing, in addition to its other functions, acts as a yielding bumper and prevents the plate 5 from coming into contact with and damaging articles of furniture and the like during use of the attachment; it will be understood that the facing 6 may be combined with the plate 5 in other arrangements than that shown in the drawing. In an case the facing 6 is provided with a longltudinal opening 8 which registers with a similar opening 9 in the plate 5 as shown in Fig. 3, the
openings, in addition to registering with each other being arranged to register with the suction opening at the operative end of the customary nozzle 10 of the vacuum cleaner, in the preferred form the facing 6 is fitted over a depending flange 9 which extends about the periphery of the opening 9 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Suitable clamping devices are provided for ,detachably fix ing the attachment in place upon the vanium cleaner, the said clamping devices being in all cases constructed and arranged to properly co-operate with the particular vacuum cleaner for which the attachment is designed. In the illustrated example the devices in question comprises lugs 11 secured to and projecting upwardly from the upper surface of the plate 5 for instance at an angle as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 said lugs 11 being arranged to fit over a head 12 which customarily forms part of the nozzle 10 of many existing types of vacuum cleaners: releasable devices illustrated in the form of clamping screws 13 co-operate with the lugs 11 to fix the attachment in place, said screws 13 being threaded into rigid projections 14 which extend upwardly from the plate 5 and may be cast as integral parts thereof.
In practice the attachment as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is located in surface engagement with the operative end of the nozzle 10 of the particular vacuum cleaner for which the attachment is designed; the attachment is detachably fixed in place by means of the lugs 11 and clamping screws 13 which fit over the head 12 of the nozzle 10 or by means of equivalent devices. The arrangement is such that the polishing surface of the facing or pad 6"W1ll lie fiat against the floor or other surface to be polished, when the vacuum cleaner is in a natural operative position, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, so that no special effort is required to bring this about; for this purpose the illustrated form of the attachment shows the plate 5 tapering from its front toward its rear edge. When the attachment is in place upon the vacuum cleaner the latter is used in the customary manner preferably with the suction producing mechanism in operation, and the faclng or polishing ad 6 is manipulated back and forth there y upon the floor or other surface to polish the same. The weight of the attachment tends to press the facing into firm engagement with the floor or other surface, to

thereby cause said facing to function most etiiciently as a polishing instrumentality; the polishing action of the facing G is still further improved by the suction created by the suction producing mechanism of the vacuum cleaner which is effective upon the floor or other surface through the registering openings 8 and 9 and tends to draw the operative end of the nozzle 10 toward said floor or other surface. As a result of this the facing or pad 6 is pressed against said floor or other surface to a still greater degree and accordingly produces a maximum polishing effect.
The attachment is simple in construction and efticient in operation and may be readily fixed in place upon and removed from the vacuum cleaner for which" it is designed.
Various changes in the specific form shown and described may be made Within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim An attaclnnent for vacuum ieleaners comprising a heavy supporting member having an opening arranged to register with the nozzle opening of a suction cleaner nozzle. said supporting member tapering from a thick front edge to a thinner rear edge to provide for exact engagement with a floor surface, a polishing pad of thick felt in surface engagement with one -face of the supporting member, said pad being provided with an opening to register with the opening in said supporting member, a depending flange formed upon said supporting member about the periphery of said opening to serve as a reinforcement for said pad, and means for detachably fixing said attachment in operative position.
