WILLIAM DAVIES, OF HENDERSON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGARETTE-MACI -HNES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,807, dated September 4, 1877 application filed May 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAVIES, of Henderson, county of Henderson, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section on line 00 m, Fig. 1, of my improved apparatus for making cigarettes, 8E0.
The invention relates to apparatus or appliances for giving form to the filling core or bunch of tobacco to be shaped for cigarettes, cheroots, and cigars, and also for inclosing the same in paper or leaf wrappers when the finished articles are of cylindrical or nearly cylindrical or tapering form; and it consists, essentially, of a slack flexible apron or band secured at the ends, but adjustable as regards its length, and of a roller or bar, with side handles, for operating the same along an inclined or levelplatform. The flexible band has sufiicient slack to allow the formation of a double fold. The tobacco filler or bunch is is made by placing the tobacco in one turn of the fold and the roller or bar in the other, and moving the roller along the platform toward one end of the same, so as to revolve the filler or bunch on the band, and give it the required shape, the wrapper being rolled on by the same movement, and secured by gum or otherwise.
In the drawing, similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
By reference to the drawing, A represents the platform, which is placed in somewhat inclined position on a suitable support, A, and provided with adjusting side bars a, nuts I), and end cross-bars d. The flexible band or apronB is attached, by clamp-screws, to the cross-bars d, being affixed to the lower end, and adjustable, as to length, at the upper end.
A roller, G, with loose side handles, is placed below the flexible band, and a filling of tobacco for the cigarette, cheroot, or cigar placed on top of the band. The roller is then lifted, and the band caused to assume a fold, as shown in Fig. 1, having in the lower turn of the fold the tobacco-filling, and in the upper the roller. The roller is then moved upward in the direction of the arrow, carrying with it the filling, which is thus, by the action of the band and roller, caused to take a cylindrical form. The wrapper, which is of paper or tobacco for cigarettes, or of leaf-tobacco for cheroots and cigars, and which has been placed on the band, is taken up and rolled around the filling in its, onward course. The finished cigarette, cheroot, or cigar is delivered at the upper end of the platform, and when the wrapper is pasted or gummed along the edge, side guides or lifting-pieces may be employed to raise the roller and band, and prevent the adhesive substance from being removed from the wrapper. The adjusting bars and nuts serve to adjust the amount of slack on the band to the quantity of filling to be used.
It is obvious thatthe bar or roller may be caused to vibrate by power, and that a cigarette, cheroot, or cigar can be formed during every single stroke or movement in one direction. One roller or bar may be made to serve for a number of bands, or a number of articles may be formed during each movement on a broad band.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the plain inclined platform A, flexible band B, and hand-roll O with the side bars a, cross-bars d, and nuts b, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM DAVIES.
