UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK D. BEATTIE, OF SOUTH HARTFORD, NEW YORK.
CIGARETTE-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 700,010, dated. May lS, 1002. Application filed January 14, 1902 Serial No. 89,782. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK D. BnnTrIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hartford, county of Washington, and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Cigarette-h/lachines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to suchimprovements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafterdescribed and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompany-T ing drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in both figures.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in perspective of my improved cigarette-machine,; showing the case partly opened with the fills ing material rolled to cylindrical form and? the paper wrapper inserted in position. Fig; 2 is a cross-section of the same.
The drawings are on an enlarged scale, and" Fig. 2 is on a larger scale than Fig. 1.
My invention relates to hand-machines for;- making cigarettes. 7
The principal objects of the invention are to facilitate the application of the paper wrap-Ii per to the filling material and to remove f roui;
the cigarette an y projecting su rplus of filling;
material.
Referring to the drawings, my machine comprises in part a case comprising two semicylindrical members 1 and 2, hinged together at 3 and each provided with a laterally-projecting tablet 4. Eachtablet 4 is provided with a ribbon-guideway, that on the member 2 comprising aplate 5, supported a short distance from the surface of the tablet, and that on the member 1 by a plate 6, in like manner supportedashort distance from the surface of the tablet. A ribbon 7 is inserted between the hinged members with one end projecting exteriorly' through the ribbon guidewayformed by plate 5, and its other end projecting exteriorly between the guideplate 6 and its supporting-tablet. The upper edge of each of the guide-plates 5and 6 is shown in toothed form. The inner edge of one of said plates, as the plate 6, is in like manner provided with a series of teeth 9,
pact cylindrical roll, as shown in Fig. 1.
which teeth are inclined toward the line of junction of the semicylindrical member 1 with its tablet 4, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2.
. In operating the machine the case is opened,
anda supply of filling material, as tobacco,
is inserted therein upon the inclosed portion ofthe ribbon. Thecase is thenclosed and heldin the hand, while the ribbon is drawn first one way and then the other until the filling material has been formed into a com- A sheet ofsuitable wrapping-paper 10 is then inserted-between the guide-plate 6 and the ribbon 7 in the position shown. in Figs. 1 and 2, and the ribbon drawn in a direction to cause said paper to be carried interiorly of the case. As the paper is drawn into the case its inner end is deflected by the inclined toothed edge 9 of. the guide-plate 6 toward the line of junction of the semicylindrical member 1 with its tablet, causing said deflected edge to be carried by the ribbon in between the ribbon and roll of filling material and to accompany the ribbon in its movement around said'roll. By moistening the outer edge of the paper 10 it is possible by drawing (the paper wholly within the case to cause said moistened edge to overlap and adhere to the first-inserted edge.
The guide-plated may be of any desired form, having its-inner edge inclined toward the line of junction of thesemicylindricah member 1 with its tablet-4.
' The notched or toothed form of plate shown in Fig. 1 renders the inserted edge of the pa per wrapper 1O visible, facilitatingits proper alinement.
The ends of the case members may be provided with cooperating cutting mechanism, as the knife 12 on the member 1, adapted to cooperate with the edge 13 on the member 2 for the purpose of removing'any projecting surplusage of filling material.
The knife 12 maybe brazed or otherwise secured to the memberl.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with a pair of semicylindrical members hinged a short distance from the surface of the tablet and having its inner edge portion inclined toward the line of junction of said cylindrical portion and tablet; a ribbon guide on the other member; and a ribbon inserted between said members, and having one end projecting exteriorly through said ribbon-guide, and the other end exteriorly between said tablet and guid e-plate,snbstantially as described.
2. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with a pairofsemicylindrical members hinged together, and one provided with a laterallyprojecting tablet; of a guide-plate supported a short distance from the surface of the tablet and having along its inner edge a series of teeth inclined toward the line of junction of said cylindrical portion and tablet; a ribbon-guide on the other member; and a ribbon inserted between said members, and having oneend projecting exteriorly through said ribbonguide, and the other end exteriorly between said tablet and guide-plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of January, 1902.
FRANK D. BEATTIE.
