Description

0, 1934- c. M. CONFORTI El AL CUSPIDOR STAND Filed Nov. 2, 1932 I N V EN TORS Chem/vs M Ca/vFozr/ By EuKE AA/aeaE/v ATTORNEY.
Patented F eb. 20, 1934 UNETED STATES ATENT QFFICE CUSPIDOR STAND Carmine M. Conforti and Folke Frederick Norden, New York, N. Y.
This invention relates to improvements in cuspidor stands and the main object is to provide a stand including a cuspidor, the same being covered when not in use and arranged to be easily moved outward and exposed when in use.
Another object is to provide a stand including a top and supporting legs, a cover plate supported between the legs, an operating shaft journaled through the top and cover plate and hav- 1 ing a carrier at its lower end, and a cuspidor removably mounted in the carrier and normally disposed under and tightly covered by the cover plate.
A further object is to provide a stand of this kind in a simple, inexpensive and attractive form.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side View of the stand.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section showing the cuspidor swung outward for use.
Figure 4 is a section along the line 44 in Figure 3, showing also the normal covered position of the cuspidor and carrier in broken lines.
Referring now with greater particularity to the drawing the stand comprises a pair of legs 1 suitably bifurcated or arranged at their lower ends 2 to act as a rigid support and secured at their upper ends 3 to a top 4 which may have a central aperture 5 to removably receive and hold a conventional ash tray 6, the rim 7 of which engages the margins of the aperture to hold the tray in place. At some distance downward from the top 4 a fiat cover plate 8 is secured in a horizontal position between the legs 1. Both the top 4 and cover plate 8 are shown in the drawing as being oval in plan or shape but it is obvious that any other configuration may be used as desired.
Journaled vertically through the top 4 and cover plate 8 adjacent one of the legs 1 is an opcrating shaft 9 which has a rigidly aiiixed handle 10 at its upper end supported at some distance above the top by a sleeve 11 encircling said shaft. The shaft 9 terminates at its lower end a short distance below the cover plate 8 and a cuspidor carrier 12 is secured to this lower end and arranged to swing fully beneath the plate. The carrier 12 comprises a ring 13 and offset arm 14 which is secured at its end to the shaft as by nuts 15 threaded thereon. The shaft 9 is journaled through the top 4 and cover plate a short distance inwardly from the adjacent leg 1 and at a point laterally and angularly outward from one side thereof and the arm 14 is arcuately formed as shown at 16 this arrangement making it possible to swing the carrier 12 through an are of 180 degrees and bring it outward from beneath the plate 8 to the position shown in Figure 4.
In use a cuspidor 16 is placed in the carrier 12 and supported therein by its flared mouth 1'7 as engaging the margin of the carrier ring 13. When not in use the carrier 12 is swung inward by manipulation of the handle 10 and the mouth of the cuspidor is thus covered by the cover plate 8. When its use is desired the cuspidor may be readily swung outward and exposed by turning the handle 10.
While we have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of our invention it is understood that we may vary therefrom in minor structural details so as best to construct a practical device for the purposes intended, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a stand, a top, legs supporting the top, a cover plate secured horizontally between the legs below the top, an operating shaft journaled vertically through the top and cover plate adjacent their margins, a handle secured to the 95 upper end of the operating shaft, and a cuspidor carrier secured to the lower end of the operating shaft below the cover plate.
2. In a stand, a top, legs supporting the top,
a cover plate secured horizontally between the legs below the top, an operating shaft journaled vertically through the top and cover plate adjacent their margins, a handle secured to the upper end of the operating shaft, and a cuspidor carrier secured to the lower end of the operating shaft below the cover plate, the said carrier comprising a ring and an offset arm extended from the ring and secured to the operating shaft.
