Description

Jan. 30, M 3 5T T 1,945,093
GIRDLE Filed March 2, 1933 Mabe'] S. Strait Gimme/1,1
Patented Jan. 30, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to abdominal supports or girdles and its object is to provide a girdle or support that will tend to maintain the body in an upright healthful posture and which will also assist in restoring the body to its correct posture after bending over.
A further object is to provide a girdle so constructed as to eliminate wrinkling of the body portion of the girdle.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of the girdle,
Figure 2, a rear view in elevation of the same, and
Figure 3, aside view in elevation of the girdle.
In the drawing numerals 10, 11, 22 and 23 indicate side portions of the front of the girdle. In order to simplify putting on the garment, slide fasteners or other suitable fastenings 13 and 14 are provided at the upper and lower sides of the back of the girdle. To the top of the girdle may be attached a brassiere 15 and the girdle may also be provided with elastic shoulder straps 16.- The side portions 10 and 11 are secured to the edge of a rear side portion 30 along a seam 81. The side portion 30 is secured to a second rear side portion 29. The rear side portions 29 and 30 are formed to fit the body of the wearer. Front side portions 22 and 23 are fastened similar to side portions 10 and 11. The front side pieces are so constructed as to overlap each other, at 17; The purpose of this is to permit one of the side pieces to have a sliding fit over the other to prevent wrinkling. The front portion of the girdle is closed by a plurality of interlacing elastic strips 18 and 19. The elastic strips 19 have oneend secured along O a straight edge 20 on the inner edge of the upper side strip 23 and the opposite ends secured along the edge 21 of the side portion 11. The elastic strips 18 are secured along the edge 24 of the lower side strip 22 and along the inner edge 25 of the upper side portion 10. The interlaced strips 18 and 19 form a rectangular lattice work which may be and preferably normally is in the form of a square. The corners of the right angle 26 and 27 are positioned at the point of bending of the body.
In operation therefore when the person bends or stoops the lattice strips 18 and 19 will not only flex individually but will have a sliding action upon each other, thus permitting the rectangle to assume the shape of a parallelogram. This flexing is permitted by the lattice work construction together with the elasticity of the elements 18 and 19. From the construction described it will be apparent that the elastic lattice work will support the abdomen and provide the necessary bracing of the body. If desired hose supporters 28 may be attached to the lower side of the girdle.
In actual experiments my girdle has resulted in providing a support which maintains the body in a natural restful position and moreover permits bending of the body without any wrinkling of the elements of the girdle when the wearer is seated.
While the invention has been described as apparently part of feminine apparel it is not limited in this respect. It may readily find utility as a support or brace for men with large abdomens.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown. in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a pair of upper and a pair of lower flexible side elements, said upper and lower elements on one side being arranged to overlap each other, a lattice work comprised of flexible parallel strips arranged at right angles with similar parallel flexible strips and interwoven with them, said strips being secured at one end to the edge of one of the upper side strips and at their other ends to the edge of the opposite lower side strip,- substantially as set forth.
2. A support of the kind described comprising a pair of upper and a pair of lower side members, the upper and the lower side member on each side having overlapping engagement, a lattice work composed of resilient strips, each of said strips being secured at one end to an edge of the lower side strip and at the other end to the opposite upper side strip, said lattice work being arranged in rectangular form with the opposite corners positioned approximately at the point of bending of the body of the wearer of the support, substantially as set forth.
3. An abdominal girdle or support comprising a pair of upper and a pair of lower side strips, said side strips having a slitted portion at the back adapted to be closed by fastening elements, the front edges of upper and opposite lower side stripsbeing secured by parallel resilient strips,
the opposite upper and opposite lower side strips being likewise secured by resilient strips, said groups of parallel resilient strips being interwoven with resilientstrips at right angles thereto, said interwoven strips forming a rectangular lattice work having two of its right'angles approximately horizontal With the normal position of the support and approximately at the point of bending of the body of the wearer of the support, substantially as set forth.
4. An abdominal girdle or support comprising a pair of upper and a pair of lower side strips, said side strips having a slitted portion at the back adapted to be closed by slide fastener elements, the front edges of upper and opposite lower side strips being secured by parallel resilient strips,
the opposite upper and opposite lower side strips .lattice work having two of its right angles approximately horizotnal with the normal position of the support and approximately at the point of bending of the body of the wearer of the sup-' port, substantially as setforth.
5. An abdominal support comprising a pair of upper and a pair of lower flexible non-resilient elements having resilient strips interwoven with similar strips to form a lattice work for securing their front edges together, said upper and lower elements on each side being positioned to overlap each other and to slide relatively to each other, thereby preventing wrinkling of said support atthe point of bending of the body of the wearer, substantially as set forth.
