Description
May 25, 1965 D.- STEINBERGER COMBINED BRASSIERE AND GIRDLE ATTACHED TOGETHER BY ZIPPER MEANS Filed March 19, 1964 INVENTOR. Qora Jzez'nbe rger 47TURN .5.
United States Patent.
3,185,156 COMBINED BRASSIERE AND GLE ATTACHED TOGETHER BY ZIPPER MEANS Dora .Steinberger, 677 West End Ave., New York, N.Y. Filed Mar. 19, 1964, Ser. No. 353,088 1 Claim. (Cl. 128-438) The present invention relates generally to foundation garments and more particularly to a combined brassiere and corselet adapted to be worn in combination or separately.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a combined brassiere and corselet which will permit the natural movements of the body as in sitting, walking, stooping, bending over, etc., without disturbing or changing the position of the garment. V
Heretofore such garments had a tendency for the back and front to slip as the body assumed various attitudes as sitting or stooping and at the same time there would be a pulling strain due to elongation of the body and a pushing strain due to shortening, with the result that upon assuming another position the friction of the body would cause the corset to shift from its previous position. There was also a tendency for the upper back edge of the corselet portion of such garments, when bending over or sitting, to draw away and protrude from the body. This was uncomfortable and unsightly, particularly where the wrinkles and protrusions of the shifted corselet might show through a tight-fitting or thin gown. In order to readjust the corselet, it was necessary for the wearer to pull and twist it into its proper position.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combined brassiere and corselet, the parts of which will cling independently to upper and lower parts of the body so that the natural elongation and shortening of the body in assuming various postures shifts the garment parts relatively to each other, but will not cause them to shift on the body or to protrude, so that the wearer may comfortably assume any natural attitude, without strain on or resistance from the garment, and the same will at all times be in its properly disposed position.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a combined brassiere and corselet, either of which may be readily detached from the other for separate use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of this character with a brassiere portion whichv constitutes a continuous supporting band about the upper part of the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of this character wherein the corselet portion thereof provides a complete and substantial support for the abdomen and diaphragm without crowding or compressive pressures.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a combined brassiere and corselet embodying my invention as it appears in use.
ice
FIG. 2 is a similar view but showing the brassiere and corselet in separated disassembled condition, the brassiere being shown laid out flat.
FIG. 3 is an elevational view looking from the left side of FIG. 1. V e j FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 1, on an enlarged scale. v
Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawing, in FIG. 1 there is shown a combined brassiere and corselet made inaccordance with the invention and designated generally at It). The combined brassiere and corselet ltl comprises a separate bust engaging brassiere structure 12 and a separate corselet structure 14 of the so called girdle type detachably joined or connected at the front by a zipper fastener assembly 16 and unattached at the back. V
The brassiere structure 12 comprises a continuous band 18 of fabric having a front section 20 and integral rear sections 22 and 24, the free end of section 22 having eyelets 26 and the free end of section 24 having coacting hooks 28 for fastening the band around the busts of the wearer. A pair of closely spaced conical-shaped bust supporting pockets 30, 30 is formed at the center of the top of the front section, the lower edges of the pockets being reinforced with semirigid strips 32 of foam rubber or the like. Upright stiffening stays or bones 34 are provided at the ends of the front section 20, extending 7 from top to bottom thereof. The rear sections 22 and 24 taper downwardly and rearwardly as indicated at 36 to the free ends thereof.
The corselet structure 14 comprises front panel side piece portions 40, 40 of two-way stretch material and portions 40', 40' of one-way vertical stretch material,
In accordance with the present invention, the brassiere structure 12 and the corselet structure 14 are detachably connected to each other at the front of the garment. For this purpose, a tape 57 is secured along the bottom edge of the front section 20 by stitching 58, and secured to the free long edge of the tape there are downwardly extending metal teeth 69 as seen in FIG. 2. A similar tape 62 but slightly wider is fastened along the top edges of the front panel 40 and side panels 42 of the corselet structure 14 closely spaced from the top thereof by means of stitching 64. Metal teeth 66 are secured to the top edge of tape 62 extending upwardly. The teeth 60 and 66 are adapted to interlock. A sliding member 68 shown on teeth 66 with handle 76 is adapted to slide along the'intermeshing teeth for interlocking and opening the teeth as in the case of a zipper fastener. By reason of this construction, the brassierestructure 12 may be worn Without the corselet structure 14 and vice versa. w:
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that .I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent tion of a brassiere structure and a corselet structure, the lower front edge of the brassiere structure being detachably connected to the upper front edge of the corselet structure, the lower rear edge of the brassiere structure being free with respect to the upper rear edge of the corselet structure, said brassiere structure comprising a band with a front section and with'rear sections with'eyelets and books on the rear sections for detachably connecting the rear sections together, said corselet structure comprising a front panel constituted by side piece front portions of two-way stretch material, extending downwardly from the upper front edge thereof, opposed side panels of two-way stretch material connected to the respective side In a foundation garment construction, the 'combina-' of one-way stretchable material extending downwardly from the upper rear edge of the corselet structure, the outer side edges of the rear central panel being connected to the outer'side edges of the respective opposed side panels, the outer side edge portion of one side panel and the adjacent edge of the rear panel being open, coacting separable fastener means extending along the open edges of said panels, and a narrow panel of non-stretchable material extending from the top to the bottom of the front panel reinforcing said front panel, the connection between the lower front edge of the brassiere structure and the upper front side of the corselet stmcture including a tape secured along the bottom edge of the brassiere structure, teeth depending from said tape, a tape secured along the upper portion of the corselet structure, upright teeth fastenedto the top edge of said latter tape, and a slida'ble member'slidable along the teeth to interlocking or separating said teeth. 7
