7 This invention relates to a protector for use in connection with drinking vessels, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred'to capable of being readily positioned upon a drinking vessel for the purpose of protecting the mouth, tongue and lips of a person, from a hygienic standpoint, from contracting diseases which may be carried by. the vessel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class referred to of a construction capable of conforming to the contour of that portion of thevesselwhich-it opposes, when the device is arranged upon the vessel in protecting person when drinking.
Further objects of the invention are to provide,
a manner as hereinafter referred to, a protector for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction, compact, of suitable strength,
thoroughly emcient in its use, expeditiously applied in position, and inexpensive to manufacure.
To the above ends essentially, and to others which may be hereinafter set forth, the invention consists of such parts and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
3o Figure 1 is a front elevation of the protector.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of a drinking glass having a smooth outer peripherywith the protector applied thereto.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a drinking glass of the peripherally ribbed or beaded type showing the adaptation therewith of the protector, the latter being shown in elevation.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in vertical section of a drinking glass of the peripherally ribbed or beaded type and showing the adaptation therewith of the protector, the latter being shown in vertical section.
. Figure 6 is a section on line H Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a section on line 'I-TFigure 1.
The protector includes a flexible body part 1 of substantially V-shape contour preferably constructed from three or more superimposed plies of paper of like form and of the desired thickness. The plies other than the inner ply are secured together throughout. The inner ply has its inner marginal part free of connection to that intermediate ply. upon which said inner ply is .55 positioned. The inner ply has its remaining por- 1933. Serial 160.696.5715
tion secured throughout to the said intermediate ply. The freed inner marginal part of the inner ply constitutes a retaining flap 2. The shape of the body part 1 forms an inverted substantially bell-shaped opening 3 having its wall or edge indicated at 4. The depth of openingii is mate'- rially less than the length of body part 1. The body part-.1 in proximity to each side edge 4 is provided on its outer face with a pair of oppositely disposed ribs 5, 6 extending from a point in proximity to the upper edge 6' of body part l'to a point aligning substantially at the transverse median of opening 3. The ribs 5, 6 from their inner or lower ends are upon an outwardly directed curve and provide means for guiding the flow of the liquid when drinking.
The body part 1 adjacent its lower end is scored, as at '7 and that portion below score '7 forms a lip or flap 8 provided with a concaved recess 9 in its outer face. The score '7 forms a hinge for 7 the lip 8. The concaved recess 9 provides a thumb or index finger hold to prevent the slipping of the protector upon glass 9' or 9" when drinking.
The body part 1 is formed with a pair of transversely extending endwise opposed spaced expandible portions 10, 11; a pair of transversely extending endwise opposed spaced expandible portions 12, 13 and a pair of transversely extending endwise opposed spaced expandible portions 14, 15. The portions 10; 12 and 14 are arranged in superposed spaced relation and the portions 11, 13 and 15 in a like manner. The portions 10, 11 are arranged adjacent the top edge 6' of body part 1. The portions 14, 15 are arranged at points substantially at the base of opening 3. Each of said expandible portions extends from a side edge of the body part 1 and terminates at a side edge of opening 3. The expandible portions are provided by suitably crimping body part 1 in a manner whereby the said portions may be expanded transversely and lengthwise of body part 1. Extending across and closing opening 3 is a mouth protecting member 16 preferably formed of tissue paper, but it is to be understood that member 16 may be set up from any suitable material. The member 16 is of materially less thickness than that of body part 1, conforms in contour to that of opening 3 and is of greater width and of substantially the samefllength as that of opening 3. .The marginal portion at each side and at the bottom of member 10 is seated upon and secured to the inner marginal portion 1''! of that intermediate ply of paper of body part 1 upon which the inner ply of the latter is positioned, and
in this connection see Figure 6. After the memher 16 is seated in the manneras referred to, the retaining flap 2 is secured to the rear face of member 16 whereby the latter is securely coupled to and forms an integral, portion of body part 1.
The drinking glass 9 is ofv the peripherally beaded or ribbed type and the glass 9" of the plane or non-ribbed type. The outer end edge 17 of member 16 is of segmental contour. The body part 1 when positioned relatively to the glass is bent upon the plane portions 18, 19 thereof. The member 16, when the protector is in protecting position, bends in alignment with the portions 18, 19.
The expandible portions 10, 11 are to allow the protector to conform to the inside shape of the glass when necessary. The expandible portions 12, 13 allow for the protector to conform to the width of the glass, and the expandible portions 1d, 15 allow for the protector to expand to conform to the outside shape of the glass.
The lip 8 with the finger or thumb hold 9 is not only employed for the purpose referred to, but also enables one when desired to permit of conveniently slipping the protector about the glass when mounted thereon.
What I claim is:
