SANITARY ENVELOPE' FOR SLICED LEMON Filed Feb. 7, 1931 Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE n'mn amen-Luann, 0] NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR '1'0 ELOISE WILLIAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SANITARY ENVELOPE FOB SLIOED LEEON Application filed February 7, 1931. Serial. Io. 514,170.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a lemon slice squeezer.
The invention has for an object the provision of a lemon slice squeezer which is characterized by a flexible sheet material covering formed to cover the spherical outer portion and both sides of a slice of lemon or the like so that the slice may be squeezed from end to end or from side to side through thecovering preventing squirting of the lemon juice and contacting of the juice with ones fingers.
As a still further object of this invention it is proposed to form corrugations in the sides of the covering so as to adapt it for adjustments to slices of different sizes.
Another object of this invention is to arrange the corrugations radially around the center point of the sides upon the edge of the spherical portion so as to aid in collapsing of the cover when closed from end to end. It is also further proposed to arrange the corrugations parallel to each other and substantially at right angles to the straight side of the segmental sides of the covering for constituting an alternative form for collapsing the cover from end to end.
Another object of this invention is to form slots in the top spherical portion of the covering to allow the insertion of various sizes of lemon slices.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a flap hingedly mounted on the inside of the spherical outer portion of the covering so as to close the slots men tioned in the previous paragraph when desired.
As a still further object of this invention it is proposed to form corrugations in the spherical outer portion of the covering to allow collapsing of this portion on the covering.
Another object of this invention is to arrange elastic bands upon the corrugations in a manner so as normally to fold the corrugations together to insure the maintaining of the sides of the covering against the sides of the slice while the slice is squeezed from end to end.
Another object of this invention is to arrange the lemon slice squeezer with a pair of segmental sides connected at the top by a stri portion formed with corrugations adapting it to fit slices of various thicknesses.
And a still further object of this invention is the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and eflicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the followin description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure Fig; 1 is a perspective view of a lemon slice squeezer constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a modified form of the device.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the flap used in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 71's a fragmentary perspective view Fig. 10 is a developed view of a still further modified. form of the device.
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, alemon slice A squeezer has been shown which comprises a flexible sheet material covering formed with a spherical outer portion 10 for covering the spherical outer portion of a slice of a lemon r. or the like and with segmental sides 11 for covering the sides of said slice so that the slice may be squeezed from end to end and from side to side without disengaging it from the squeezer. The sides 11 are formed with radial curved corrugations 12 which extend from the bottom edges of the sides to a point 13 substantially midway between the ends of the spherical outer portion 10. Slots 14 are formed in the spherical outer portion 10 for allowing expansion to fit any size slice of lemon. The bottom of the covering is left open for the insertion of the slice of lemon and thereafter for the insertion of a fork or other suitable utensil for holding the slice and cover while squeezing.
In the form of the device illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, a 'flap 15 is shown attached along a small tab portion 16 within the spherical outer portion 10 of the cover. This flap is capable of assuming a position as illustrated in Fig. 4 so as to be disposed on one side of a lemon slice, or to be swung up as indicated by the dot and dash lines 16 to a osition in which the slots 14 are closed. Vhen the squeezer is intended to be used without supporting the lemon with a fork or the like, then the flap 15 may be moved so as to close the slots and prevent lemon oil in the skin of the lemon from spraying out throu h the slots.
In ig. 6 a modified form of the device has been illustrated. In this form the spherical cup portion 10 is plain, that is, it is not provided with slits for the insertion of some tool. Further, the corrugations upon the sides, indicated by reference numeral 17, are parallel to each other and extend substantially at right angles to the straight edges of the segmental sides.
In Fig. 7 another form of the squeezer has been illustrated, in which the sides 18.are plain, that is, not corru' ated and the spherical outer portion 19 is ormed with corrugations 20. These corrugations allow adjustment of the squeezer to fit slices of lemon of different widths. Further, they allow contraction of the portion so that the lemon may be thoroughly. squeezed from side to side. Flexing of the material itself is depended upon to allow'squeezing of the slice from end to. end. In Figs. 8 and 9 another form of the invention has been illustrated, in which a means is provided for normally contracting the corrugated sides so as to maintain contact of the sides of the covering with the sides of the slice during the squeezing. This is an advantage in that if the sides of the covering were not contracted, large spaces would exist between the sides of the covering and the sides of the slots through which the juice could spray out upon ones clothing or other articles.
The means comprises elastic strips 21 attached upon the outer folds 22 of the corrugated sides of the covering. The elastic strips are arranged near thebottom edges of the segmental sides and normally hold the corrugations closed. As illustrated on the drawings, the corrugations are partially spread open. If released, they would close still further. Thus, the squeezer can accommodate slices of different. sizes and operate as before stated.
In Fig. 10 another form of the invention has been disclosed, in which the lemon slice squeezer consists of a pair of segmental side members 23 connected with each other at the top by a strip portion 24. The strip portion is formed with corrugations 25 so that the sides may be adjusted to various distances from each other to accommodate lemon slices of different widths. In this form the segmental, sides 23 are flexible and it is intended that they be placed adjacent the sides of a lemon slice and pressed together to accomplish the squeezing. Further the squeezer may be held'in one hand and the lemon slice squeezed from to end through the spaces between the sides 23 so as to efliciently squeeze the slice. v
The operation of the various forms described are somewhat identical. In all forms the lemon slice is placed within the squeezer and then the slice is squeezed through the squeezer. juices from the lemon or the other similar article being squeezed is prevented from spraying and at the same time the fingers of the person are protected. The squeezing of a lemon slice in this fashion is also more sanitary than with just ones fingers in that the juices, cannot wash dirt from the finger tips along.
It is to be understood that my sanitary envelope may be used for any sliced citrus fruit, also that two or more thin envelopes may be used within one another instead of alsingle sheet to form an envelope of several p ies.
While I have shown and described the pre ferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I donot limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modi- In all forms the fications comingwithin the scope of the in-.
vention as defined in the appended claims.
