C. M. CHRISTIAN SANITARY SLEEVE FOR ICE CREAM AND OTHER CONTAINERS Filed Feb. 20, 1931' 2 Sheets-Sheet y Attorney 2c. MJCHRISTIAN SANITARY SLEEVE FOR ICE CREAM AND OTHER CONTAINERS Filed Feb. 20; 1931 May 1932" Patented May 31, 1932 UNITED STATES CHARLES M. CHRISTIAN, OF FONDA, IOWA SANITARY SLEEVE FOR ICE CREAM AND OTHER CONTAINERS Application filed February 20, 1931. SerialNo. 517,321.
This invention relates to an adjustable sleeve for ice cream containers and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a sleeve that is adapted to be placed min the upper part of a container after the contents have been .partly removed therefrom, so that the paper or other lining of the container will be protected by the sleeve and the sleeve will act to prevent the upper part 10,0f the lining from falling away from the sides of the container, said sleeve also acting to prevent the arm or sleeve of the person removing the contents from the container, from having his arm or sleeve soiled by some of the contents of the (flmtainer sticking to the upper part of the lining.
Another object of the invention is to make the sleeve in the form of a split sleeve and of flexible material so that the device can be used on containers of diflerent sizes, and also to provide the upper end of the device with a curved flange which is adapted to vengage the upper edge of the container whereby the device is held in position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifical- 1y pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters 'denotelike or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through an ice cream container showing the invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the device in flattened position.
Fig. 4 is'a top plan view of the device. .In these drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the device which is formed 'of an elongated sheet of any suitable material which when rolled into a sleeve or cylinder will retain this position while permitting the sleeve to be expanded or contracted so that itcan be placed in diflerent sizes of cans. Arolled flange 2 is formed at the upper edge of the device so that this flan e will engage the upper edge of a container when the device is placed in the upper part of the container as shown in Fig. 1. Thus the flange will hold the device in the upper part of the container.
As is well known, containers for ice cream and the like are provided with a paper or other lining B which, when some of the contents are removed from the container will fall away from the sides of the container and thus make it diflicult to removethe rest of the contents from the container and portions of the contents sticking to the upper part of the"lining will soil the arm and sleeve T of a person dipping the rest of the contents from the container.
-Byplacing this sleeve in the upper part of the container, after some of the contents have been removed, the sleeve acts to hold part of the lining in place,,and it also pre-" vents the arm or sleeve of the user from coming into contact with the lining and thus prevents any of the contents sticking to the lining from soiling the arm or sleeve. T
The sleeve also protects the upper part of the lining from dirt, dust, insects or the like, and as the lining is made in the form of a split sleeve having a certain amount of resiliency, the device can be placed in containers of different sizes.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that'changes may be made in the construction and in the combiwhat contents comprising a split sleeve of resilient and flexible material, fitting in the upper part of the container and within the upper part of the lining, and having a rounded flange at its upper end fitting over the upper .end of the lining and the container, said sleeve being of a. length suflicient to extend well into the container to protect the arm or sleeve of a person removing the contents 5 from the container.
