VMore specically this invention relates to improvements in the receptacles such as shown in the Louis M. Piker'patent, No. 1,912,915, issued June 6, 1933. of decorative and strengthening ribs 3I and 32 which extend throughout the length thereof. 'I'he said side 26 is additionally provided at its free edge with a lip 33 of a length less than the length of the said side which is to be bent onto the side along the broken line 34 to strengthen the edge of the receptacle. The remaining or back side 25 of the blank is also provided with a pair of decorative and strengthening ribs 35 and 36. The free edge of the side 25 is provided with three lips or tabs 31, 38 and 39 of which tabs 31 and 39 are adapted to be bent onto the side 25 along the broken lines 46 and 4I for strengthening the edge of the receptacle while the lip 38 is to be formed into a hinge eye as shown in dotted lines at 42 in Fig. 9.
The body portion I8 is provided centrally thereof with a plurality of apertures 43 for attaching to the receptacle the lugs 44 and 45, see Fig. 1, which in turn have hingedly connected therewith the bail handle 46. 'Ihe front side 26 is likewise provided with a plurality of apertures 41 which receive the lugs or fastening means of a lock or other suitable clasp for securing the lid or cover to the section or box in closed position.
'Ihe receptacle is made by first piercing or stamping a at sheet substantially to the outline as shown in Fig. 8, but without the decorative and strengthening ribs, embossed upper surface or other bends, to be later described, therein. This blank is provided at ends of the front and back sides 25 and 26, at the points where the strengthening and decorative ribs are to be stamped, with lugs or teats shown in Fig. 8 in dotted lines at 48. These lugs or teats 48 are so proportioned that during the stamping or embossing operation they are drawn toward the center of the sides so that the edge is in the same plane throughout the height thereof, that is, the edge of the sides and the embossed ribs lie in the same vertical plane when the pan is bent to proper position. It is in this particular that the bottom section or box I5 differs from that shown in the prior patent, above referred to; in other words, the blank shown in the prior patent would be provided with lugs or teats, such as 48, at the points of the decorative and strengthening ribs so that the edges of the sides and ribs would be in the same plane instead of having the edges of these ribs arcuately receding from said plane.
After the sheet has been stamped, pierced and embossed it is folded to the proper form which as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is rectangular in shape. By this folding the portion of the blank between the body portion I 8 and the lowermost decorative and strengthening rib of the sides and ends is rounded. It will be appreciated that this would tend to stretch the metal at the corners of the body portion I8 where the sides and ends are joined to one another in several directions resulting in a corner having an undulated or corrugated and unsightly appearance. To avoid this the material at these corners is entirely removed as shown at 48 in Fig. 8. 'Ihe opening formed by the removal of .this metal is bounded by a line 49 extending parallel with the free edge of the sides which line is tangent to an arcuate edge 50. The arcuate edge 50 in turn connects with an arcuate edge 5I which in reality is the edge of the at top surface of cover or lid and from which the rounded corner extends. Connected with the other end of the arcuate edge 5I is a third arcuate edge 52 which is similar to the arcuate edge 50 and has extending tangentially therefrom the edge 53 which is angularly related to the free edge of the end sections.
When the sides and ends are folded to their operative positions the boundaries of the opening 48 form an elongated aperture at the corner point where the metal would be stretched in the different directions, as above mentioned, this opening being shown at 54 in Figs. 4 and 5. It should be noted at this time, and as above mentioned, that the boundary 5I is substantially at the beginning of the round of the top toward the side and end while the straight edge 49 is substantially at the bottom of this round or where it joins With the vertical surfaces of the side and end. With the parts in this position the adjacent edges of the side and ends overlap one another and in order to provide a smooth outer surface the lateral sides of the ends 23 and 24 are each respectively depressed up to the lines 55 and 56 for a depth equal to the gauge or thickness of the metal and it is into this depression that the adjacent edge of the adjacent front or back is seated.
In order to continue the smooth surface at the point of jointure of the side, end and top the said parts are depressed around the aperture 54 which depression is bounded by the adjacent strengthening or decorative ribs of said side and end, the lines 51 and 58 and the corner 63 of the top raised portion and it is into this depression that the corner pieces 59, see Fig. '7, are fitted. From this it will be seen that the ends 23 and 24 have a portion which is depressed to a double depth and this portion is bounded by the edge 53 of the opening, free lateral edge, adjacent rib 21, and line 55 between said adjacent rib and the opening edge 53. It should also be noted that the `decorative and strengthening ribs 21 and 28, of the sides 23 and 24, from the depression lines 55 and 56 to the lateral free edges thereof, are of less width than between said lines since it is necessary that the said rib portions fit within the rib portions of the front and back sides.
One of the corner pieces 59 is shown in perspective in Fig. '7 and comprises a triangular body portion 68 having its corner removed as at 6I and from which body portion extends a skirt 62. Said skirt 62 is semi-circular to conform with the rounded corner at the point where the sides and ends connect with one another and at the same time the body portion 60 and skirt 59 are connected to one another by an arcuate fillet which corresponds to the rounded corner existing at the point of connection of the top with the sides and ends. The cut away portion 6I of the body portion corresponds with the corner 63 of the embossed top surface.
After the parts have been bent to the proper position and shape they are secured to one another by any suitable or desirable means such as sweating, soldering, or spot welding, the latter being shown in the drawings and indicated by the reference character 64. From the foregoing it will be noted that there has been provided a receptacle in which all of the corners are not only given a rounded form but with the corners at the point of juncture of the ends, sides and top substantially re-enforced to withstand blows occasioned by dropping or shifting the said receptacle.
Instead of securing the corner pieces as above noted the same may be held in operative position by means of spring clips or arms which project from the under surface of said corner pieces and are inserted through the aperture 54. This .aras-,287.1

As shown byFig. 11, the said corner pieces instead of being `mounted on the exterior of the receptacle maybe securedjin vposition on theiinterior thereof with the body portion of said'corner piece, .indicated in Fig. 11 by there'ference 'character 1B, forced outwardly so that its Aouter surface is substantially in the same plane as the surfaces of the sides, ends `and top of the receptacle.
In each of these constructions it will be noted thatthere has been provided an extraneous corner or cover for the apertureszat the corners of the receptacle and that these covers or corner pieces may be finished the same as the body portion of the receptacle or finished to contrast therewith for ornamental or decorative purposes.
What is claimed is:
1. A metal receptacle of the class described comprising a base and walls extending therefrom at an angle thereto, said receptac-le having rounded corners at the point Where the Walls are connected with the base, said Walls overlapping one another at their adjacent ends to provide rounded corners at the points where the Walls connect with one another and having at the points of jointure of said Walls with said base an elongated aperture, and a cover for said aperture comprising a fiat portion adapted to rest on the base and a semi-c-ircular skirt resting against the walls of the receptacle and completing the Walls and base surfaces with a rounded corner at their points of juncture.
2. In a metal receptacle of the class described the combination of a base having extending therefrom side and end walls, the adjacent ends of the side and end walls overlapping one another said receptacle having apertures at the points of juncture of the side and end Walls and the base, and a cover for each aperture comprising a flat portion adapted to rest on the base and a semicircular skirt resting against the walls of the receptacle for closing said apertures. .t
3. In a receptacle of the class described the combination of a base having extending from the edges thereof wall members disposed at an angle to the base, said Wall members overlapping one another at their corners, said wall members and base each having material removed therefrom at and around their points of juncture with one another whereby an aperture is formed at each of these points, and a corner piece comprising a at portion adapted to rest on the base and a semi-circular skirt resting against the walls of the receptacle adapted to close each of said apertures and conforming in general with the adjacent walls and base of the container.
4. A container of the class described having a base and side Walls with formed -rounded corners at their contiguous portions, said receptacl-e having an offset depression in the material at fsaid .corners --and ya corner piece in `each hof `said depressions at the i-points of :common engage- :ment :of Athe Wallsfandvbase.

In a metal container of the class described, the combination of a rectangular base, side and end walls projecting from the base at an angle thereto, the adjacent ends of the side and end Walls overlapping one another to provide a continuous wall for the receptacle, said receptacle having an aperture at each corner thereof where the adjacent ends of the side and end Walls and base of the receptacle meet, the material of the receptacle around each aperture being offset a distance equal to the gauge of a cover for the apertures, a formed cover disposed in the offset portion around each aperture for closing same and continuing the rounder corners of connection of the Walls With one another and with the base, means for securing the cover piece in position, comprising spot Welding of the cover piece to the depressed material around the aperture.

In a metal container of the class described, the combination of a rectangular base, side and end Walls projecting from the base at an angle thereto, the adjacent ends of the side and end walls overlapping one another to provide a continuous wall for the receptacle, said receptacle having an aperture at each corner thereof where the adjacent ends of the side and end walls and base of the receptacle meet, the material of the receptacle around each aperture being offset a distance equal to the gauge of a cover for the apertures, a formed cover disposed in the offset portion around each aperture for closing same and continuing the rounded corners of connection of the Walls With one another and with the base, and means for securing the cover piece in position, comprising arms secured to the inner surface of the cover piece and` projecting through the aperture into engagement with the inner surface of the receptacle adjacent the aperture.
10, A cover for the aperture left in a drawn and formed metal receptacle that has a rounded corner at the point Where the base or top of said receptacle meets the integral side Walls, comprising a flat base portion for the cover and an arcuate skirt portion extending therefrom and connected with one another by a rounded llet, said cover base portion and skirt portion together covering a greater area than the area of the aperture, and means carried by the cover and projecting through the aperture for securing the cover in position.

In a metal receptacle of the class described, the combination of a base, side and end Walls projecting from the base at an angle thereto, the adjacent end of the side and end walls overlapping one another to provide a continuous wall for the receptacle, said receptacle having an aperture at each corner thereof Where the adjacent corners of the side and end walls and base meet. a formed metal cover disposed over each aperture and closing same and continuing the rounded corner of connection of the Walls with one another and with the base, and means for securing the cover pieces in position, comprising arms secured to the inner surface of each cover piece and projecting through the aperture into engagement with the inner surface of the receptacle adjacent the aperture.
12. In a metal receptacle of the class described, the combination of a base, side and end Walls projecting from the base at an angle thereto, the adjacent ends of the side and end Walls overlapping one another to provide a continuous wall for the receptacle, said receptacle having an aperture at each corner thereof Where the adjacent corners of the side and end Walls and base meet, and a formed metal cover disposed interiorly of the receptacle at the corners thereof, said cover having a portion offset an amount equal to the thickness of the metal around the apertures and with said offset portion projecting through the apertures for closing the same, and said covers having portions thereof adjacent the apertures respectively secured to the end and side Walls and the base.
