McAleer, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo,
Mich.
Application January 3,
16 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are;
First, to provide a container for various products such as food products, for example lard or other relatively heavy materials, which provides an attractive package for the material and also is well adapted for handling by the purchaser or delivering the product to the purchaser.
Second, to provide a container formed of box or container board and having a handle which is strong and convenient to grasp.
Third, to provide a container having these advantages which is very economical to produce and may be formed of a blank adapted to be shipped in the knock-down and readily set up by the packer.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is apreferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the features of my invention. f
Fig. 2 is a perspective'view of the container adjusted for carrying.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line '4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1 showing details of the cover-securing means.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section on a, line 35 corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. 2 showing details of the securing means when the container is adjusted for carrying.
Fig. '7 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view showing the relation of the grip members of the inner and outer cover flaps.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank from which the container illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 is formed.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Fig. l0 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line 10-10 of Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is a transverse section on line 11-11 of Fig. 9.
Fig. 12 is aplan view of the blank from which the embodiment shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 is formed.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, the container is formed of an integral blank, shown in Fig. 8, and comprises a bottom 1, sides 2 and 3 disposed in align- 1933. Serial No. 649,823
ment. The side wall 3 has a cover flap or extension 4 while the side wall 2 has a cover flap or extension 5.
The bottom 1 is provided with end wall flaps 6, 6 while the side wall 2 has end wall flaps 7, 7. 60 The side wall 3 has end wall flaps 8, 8. The end wall fiaps 8, 8 are provided with locking tongues 9 engageable with slits 10 in the end wall flaps 7, thereby locking the end walls together and the container in erected position. The end wall aps 8 have cover flaps l1 on their upper edges adapted to be folded within the cover flaps 4 and 5.
The blank is formed of box board or container board and is suitably scored as indicated by dotted lines to facilitate folding on predetermined lines. l
The cover flap 4 is, in the embodiment illustrated, relatively narrowand is provided with a tongue-like grip 12 transversely slit at 13 and 1ongitudinally scored at 14 so that portions of its edges may be folded or turned upwardly into flanges 15.
The outer cover ap 5 has a hand hole opening 16 therein with a central cross bar-like grip portion 17. This grip portion is transversely slit at 18 and longitudinally scored at 19 to provide flanges corresponding to the fianges15 of the inner grip, the grip 17 being disposed so that it overlies the grip 12 and the flanges of the grips may be turned upwardly into overlapping relation, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The outer cover flap 5 has longitudinal scores 20, 21, 22 and 23. These scores facilitate the bending of the outer cover member and its adjustment to an arched carrying position as shown in Fig. 2. The score lines 23 also provide a securing flap 24 which has tongues 25 at its ends engageable with vertical slits 26 in the side wall 3, the score line 22 permitting the lapping of the flap upon the side wall 3 and engagement with the slits 26 below the breaks 2'7 therein, as is shown in Fig. 1. These portions 27 are easily fractured so that an upward pull on the outer cover flap which may be done by grasping the grip will break or fracture these parts 27 allowing the tongues 25 to slide longitudinally in the slits to the position shown in Fig. 2. The same upward pull, owing to the scoring of the outer cover flap referred to, allows it to .assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and brings the grip portions and their flanges into overlapping relation.
'I'he flanges on the inner grip underlie the flanged edges of the outer grip so that the hand, in grasping the grip, holds these partsin clamping engagement, with a result that a. substantial part of the load is sustained by the inner cover flap, and there is, in effect, an interlocking of the ends of the flanges of the inner grip member with the edges of the hand opening in the outer cover ilap.
The modified form or embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive is formed of a blank shown in Fig. 12 which comprises a bottom 30, sides 31 and 32, inner top flap 33 on the side 32, and outer top flap 34 on the side 31. The bottom is provided with end flaps 35 While the side walls 31 and 32 have overlapping interlocking flaps 36 and 3'7. The end flaps 36 have inner cover flaps 38. The side wall cover flap 33 has a grip 39 corresponding to the grip 12 while the outer cover flap 34 has a relatively narrow tongued flap 40 engageable with a longitudinal slit 41 in the side wall 2, the tongue overlapping and being secured to the side wall. In this structure, the outer cover flap 34 is not adjustable to an arched position but the handle may be grasped by slightly depressing the end Wall flaps, as is illustrated in Fig. 10. The securing flap 40 is preferably centrally scored to facilitate engagement with the slit 41.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in two embodiments which I consider very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate and describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
