Be it known that I, FRANK H. IIQUGHLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in theState of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac- This invention relates to that class of boxes or cartons shown and described in my appli cation marked A and filed of even date herewith; and my object is to provide a box of that character which while being economical in construction will be-capable ofbeing sealed and made thoroughly germ-proof..
- My'irivention therefore consists in the box or carton as illustrated in its preferable though not necessary embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in detail hereinafter, and set forth by the'clai ms at the end hereof.
In the drawings accompanying this application, Figure 1 represents the blank from which my box is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box partly made up and with the upper end partly closed, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section.
' Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals, 1 represents the blank, which is creased or scored entirely across its top and bottom at 2 and 3, thus dividing the ends from the sides. The blank is then creased or scored vertically at 4, 5, 6, and 7, and these two sets of creases form the sides 8, 9, 10, and 11, their gluing-strips 12, the ends 13, 1 1, 15, and 16, and 17, 18, 19, and 20. One-half of each of the end parts 13, 15, 17, and 19 and each of the parts 16 and 20 are made slightly smaller than the rest of the end parts for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and between the parts 13, 14, and15 and 17, 18, and 19 there is a small piece cut away, as shown. in Fig. 1. further creasedor scored, as shown at 13, 15*, 17 and 19, so that when the blank is made into box form the parts 13, 15, 17, and
19 may fold inwardly on these creases. The blank is folded or doubled on itself on the creased and the pasting or gluingstrip12 secured to the inner edge of'the side 11.
To set up the box, it is preferable to use a form or mandrel of rectangular shape of the The parts 13, 15,-17, and 19 arerectangular opening formed by the sides 8, 9, 10, and 11. Glue is now-spread on these enlarged portions, or, if desired, it may'bespread within opposite side, when the operator guides and directs these enlarged or projecting portionswithin said pocket and presses the ends down flat; When the glue sufliciently adheres, the mandrel may of course be withdrawn, and we will now have a box or carton with its lower end absolutely sealed and which will be germproof and air-tight. After the mandrel is withdrawn the box or carton is filled and the upper end sealed in a similar manner.
It is of course obvious that the mandrel is not-necessary, but simply makes it easier and vious that the projecting parts to be inserted within the pocket formed by the opposite end parts may, if preferred, be made much larger,

Upon referring to my drawings it will be observed that the parts 13, 15,17, and 19 (each of which has been described as having a half of smaller size) in reality have enlarged parts, which I have lettered 13",.15", 17 and 19", and I deem this construction as important for the reason that when the parts of the box are folded) the said parts 13 and 15 fold under the gluing portion of the parts Y14, and the parts 17 b and 19 fold under the gluing portion of the part 18, and thus the end is doubled or reinforcedjat the point where it is sealed or glued. This doubledor reinforced structure thus greatly increases the strength of the end closure, which of course is the mostvulnerable part of a box.
