-My invention relates to boxes and has for an object to provide a box that is extremely rigid and substantial in construction and which can be repeatedly shipped and handled.
Another object of the invention resides in forming a simple and practical box having a closure adapted to be frequently openedand re-closed.,
An object of the invention resides in providing i a box with a closure comprising cover flaps adapted to be jointly folded into closing position.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a box in which the closure is adapted to sustain substantial load.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a box having re-inforcing members extending across certain Walls thereof and on which the edges of the closure naps are adapted yto be supported when theclosure is in closing position.
An object of the invention resides in constructing the ends of the closure aps with anges adapted to rest upon said reinforcing members.
I A feature of the invention resides in constructing the reinforcing members as cleats directly secured to the end walls adjacent the ends of the closure flaps and below the upper edges of the end walls.
Another object of the invention resides in providing iianges along the other edges of the closure flaps and connected to the first named ilanges.
Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

Fig. 6 is a developed view of the blank from which the end walls of the box are constructed- My invention, as disclosed in the drawings, is preferably constructed from fiber board or any other suitable material and is formed from blanks A and B shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 'I'he blank A consists of a single sheet of fiber board or other similar material Il of a width substantially equal to Il and I6. In addition the blank is formed with two longitudinal scores Il and i8 oilset at their ends as indicated at 20. By means of the various .scores the blank is divided into a bottom I9, side walls 2| and!! and cover flaps 23 and 24. The marginal portions of the blank, outwardly of the scores Il and I 8 are constructed with notches 25 I and 26 which are disposed adjacent the scores I2,
the length of the box which 5l` stitches 4t or by gluing or in lshown in I5 and I3 and I4. These notches form in the marginal portions of the biankfianges 2l, 28, 29, SI and 32. The marginal portions of the blank, outwardly of the scores Il and I6, are formed with slits 33 which lie in continuation of the scores Il and I8. These slits and scores Il and I6 form iianges 34 and 35 which issue from the outer edges of the flaps 23 and 2t and extensions 36 which issue from the ends of the manges 2l' and 32. In the ilap'24 is formed a finger hole 3l.
The blank B is shown in detail in Fig. 6. This blank is constructed from a sheet of ber board similar to that used in the construction of the blank A which is designated by the reference numeral I8. This blank is ofthe same width as the width of the box and is of a height slightly greater than the height of the box. Near the uppermost edge of this blank is formed a transverse score v43 which divides the blank into an end wall 44 and a marginal portion t5. The marginal portion 45` is adapted to be bent over 'the score 4I and doubled back upon the body of the blank, as shown in Fig. 3. These parts are fastened together by means of staples or wire any other suitable manner. The blank B has attached to it near the uppermost edge thereof and immediately below the marginal portion 45 a cleat or reinforcing member 39 which may be constructed of wood,
metal or any other suitable material. This cleat extends completely across the blank and is secured thereto by 4I or by gluing or in any other suitable manner. Immediately below the cleat 39 is a hand hole 42, the upper edge of which lies substantially at the elevation of the lower edge of the cleat 39.
In the assembly of the box the flanges 21 and 34 of blank A are bent outwardly from thetlap 23 at right angles thereto and the extensions 36 disposed in overlying position with reference to the flange 34. These parts are then secured together by means of staples or stitches 4l, as
Fig. 4, or in any other suitable manner. 'I'he flanges 32 and I5 are similarlysecured together through the extensions 36.' The side walls l2| and 22 are next folded up means of staples or wire stitches along the scores I3 and and thus filled boxes, one upon the I4 and the end walls 38 secured to the flanges 28 29 and 3l by means of wire stitches, or staples 48 or in any other suitable manner. Both end Walls are likewise attached to the corresponding ends of the box. When the parts are in proper position the cleats or reinforcing members 39 extend inwardly into the interior of the box.
The use of the invention is as follows: The two flaps 23 and 24 are of such width that the flanges 34 and 35 thereof abut against one another when the closure is in closing position. The distance from the uppermost surface of the cleats 39 to the upper edges of the end walls 39 is such that the fianges 21 and the fact;that the notches 25 are triangular in shape, beveled edges 49 are formed on the flanges 21 and 32 which facilitate closing of the closure flaps. It will be seen that, when the iiaps are in closing position, the same form a closure for completely covering the open end of the box. The flanges 21, 34, 32, together and issuing from the edges of the respective flaps with which they `are associated serve as reinforcing members for the said edges of the flap. The flanges 21 and. 32, resting upon the cleats 39 transmit any weight which may be placed upon the 'closure of the box to the cleats to the walls of the box. The flanges 34 and 35 being connected with .the flanges .21 and 32 likewise transmit stresses to the cleats 39 and thereby stiifen the box ,and assist in supporting loads .placed upon the closure of the box.
The advantages of my invention are manifest. An extremely rigid and substantial box is provided which may permit of stacking of numerous other. When the box is gripped through one of the hand holes, the cleat disposed in proximity thereto transmits the stress through the side walls of the box 32 `may rest thereon. Due to and 35 being connected end walls of preventing pulling out of the portion of the box at the hand hole.
Changes in the specific form of my invention as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention. v
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent A box open at the top comprising side and end walls and a bottom connected therewith, said end walls being free at their upper ends and continuous at such locality from one side .wall to the other, a closure for the box comprising closureflaps hinged to the two side walls of the box and extending substantially in a common plane whenin closing position, said flaps meeting intermediate the side walls of the box, flanges issuing from the ends of said flaps, other anges issuing from the other edges of said flaps and disposed in juxtaposition when the closure is in closing position, extensions disposed on certain of said flanges and secured to the other flanges for holding the flanges in extended position, said rst named fianges being disposed upon the interioi` of the box, and supporting cleats secured to the said end walls upon the inner surfaces thereof at localities situated below the upper walls of the box distances substantially equal to the heights of the flanges, said first named flanges throughout' substantially the entire length thereof engaging said cleats and resting thereon whereby stresses created by loads placed upon the closure of the box are transmitted to the lateral walls of the box through the flangesy of the closure, said anges engaging the the box upon the inner surfaces thereof to resist weaving of the box through pressure applied to the corners of the box.
