This invention relates to-certainhew, and useful improvements in locks andrefers more particularly to that type of lock having a removable lock cylinder or plug;
It is an object of this invention to simplify the construction of such locks and to provide improved means for normally preventing withdrawal of the lock cylinder or plug.
Another object of this invention is .to provide a lock of the character. described wherein the .lock cylinder or plug is held assembled with its casing or mounting, member by inter-engaging abutments carried by the plug and easing which may be disengaged upon movement of the plug to a predetermined relative position with respect to the casing, and in which novel means are provided for preventing movement of the plug to said predetermined position.
A further object of this invention. resides in the provision of a spring member readily assembled with the casing or mounting head to provide a movable stop for preventing movement of ,the plug to its position permitting withdrawal.
Another object of this invention residesin the provision of a lock of the character describedin which the spring means which affords a movable stop to normally prevent movement of the lock cylinder to its withdrawing position, is maintained properly assembled with the casing by being disposed between adjacent abutments carried by the plug and the casing.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved tool for moving the spring stop member to inactive position to facilitate withdrawal of the plug.
And a still further object of this invention resides in forming the tool so as to engage the key whereby both the tool and the, keymaybe simultaneously operated and the withdrawal of theplug thus greatly facilitated.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and moreparticularlydefined by the appended claims,it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:

Figure 6 is a detail perspective sectional view taken through Figure 4 on the planes of the line Referring'now more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral '7 represents a conventional lock mounting head or casing having a longitudinal bore 8 -counterbored, as at 9, at its outer end and provided with a bore 10 of reduced diameter at its 5 innermost end.
A'lock cylinder or plug 11 is inserted into the bore 8 from its front end and is normally secured against rotation therein by the engagement of a plurality of locking tumblers 12 in a longitudinal groove 13 which communicates with the casing bore 8 and extends inwardly from the counterbore 9, the tumblers being retractible to free the cylinder for rotation and the performance of its locking functions, by the insertion of a proper key "14 into its key receiving slot 15. To accommodate the movement of the lower ends of the tumblers incidental to the insertion and removal of the key, a second longitudinal groove 16 is provided diametrically opposite the groove 13.
Rotation of the cylinder or plug is imparted to a latch actuating element or shank 17 having an enlarged two diameter head 18 disposed in the reduced bore 10 and closing the bottom of the I bore 8 at the inner end of the lock casing, through .a'cam 19 eccentrically projected from the inner end" of the lock cylinder and received in a notch 20 formed in the head 18.
,To" maintain the lock cylinder or plug 11 properly assembled with the casing against longitudinal movement therein, inter-engaging abutments carried by the lock cylinder or plug and the casing are provided. The lock cylinder carried abutment is provided by a groove 21 in the inner end of the cylinder. The groove 21 extends throughout the major circumference of the cylinder and has an opening or gateway 22 leading .thereto and formed by cutting away the metal between the extreme end of the plug and the groove. The groove and the opening 22 thus together form a bayonet slot through which a pin 23 which comprises the casing carried abutment, .may be passed when the lock cylinder is in a position of rotation aligning the opening 22 with the pin.
It is,however, desirable that the alignment of the opening 22 with the pin should not take place within the normal limits of movement of disabled to permit the cylinder to be moved'tdits position effecting the desired alignment.
The limits of movement of the lock cylinder in one direction, are defined by the engagement of the end 24 of the groove 21 with the pin 23, and in the other direction by the engagement of a stop abutment 25 on the cylinder with a'dep-ressablestop 26 formed by one end of a substantially annular lock washer-like flat' spring- 27"positioned in the counterbore 9. The ends of the spring 27 terminate short of each other and the end 26 -normally projects :outwardly of the major portion of the spring which rests on the shoul'der'28 flange 33 formed on the outer end of the lock cylinder and received in the counterbore 9. The
space provided between the bottomof the coun- I terbore 9 which is the shoulder 28, and theinner surface of the narrow flange portion 32 accommodates the spring end 26 duringthe normal rotation of the lock cylinder and the back of the wide 'flange portion 31 cooperates with the shoulder 28 to maintain the spring in position.
"As 'hereinbefore brought .outyit is necessary, when it'is desired to withdraw the lock cylinder,
to-move the same beyond one of its normal limits r of movement and as such movement must=be beyond the normal limit of counter-clockwise rotation'afforded by the spring end-26 and the plug carried stop 25, it is necessary that the spring end 26 be moved out of engagement with the stop 25. To this end an'opening 'or slot'34 is formed through the flange 33-adjacent the-stop and in line with the spring end 26*when'thelock cylinder or plug-is in its lockedpos'ition to permit the-insertion ofa' portion of atool=35 to'depress the; spring end and release the plug for further counter-clockwise rotation.
Obviously the insertion of the proper key 12 into the lock cylinder to retract the-tuinblers-is necessary before such further rotation of the cylinder may be effected.
The tool 35 has a-handle part 36 stamped from bendable'metal and formed'with a main portion 3? and an inturned end- 38 between'which'the key is receivable. portion 3'7 has a laterally directed flange .39 to which a pin 40 is secured, the pin 40 being of a size '-to enter the opening 34 whereby a slight pressureon the tool toward the lock structure moves the springend 26 out of engagement 'with' the plug carried stop 25, and inasmuchas the tool 35 is engaged with the key 12 it is apparent'that rotation'may be readily imparted to the lock cylinder-or plug without withdrawing the tool.
It is noted that the head 18 of the actuating member 17 has an inwardly'extending arcuate boss or projection-41 diametrically opposite the cam receiving recess 20 so as to enter the opening 22 of the bayonet slot. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will :be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described 'appertains, that I provide a lock structure having a removable lock-cylinder which may be readily-withdrawn -upon movement thereof to a predetermined position beyond one of its normal limits of movement, and one in which extremely simple meansare provided for normally preventing movement of the lock cylinder to such predetermined position. It is also readily apparent -"that' uthe "novel spi ing means employed for preventing rotation of the cylinder" to its releasing forming the'bottom of the counterbore 9, and its 1. 'end 29 and is-directed laterally to'engage an abutment or stop 30 formed-by notching or recessing the shoulder 28, as bestillustrated in Figure 6, to hold the spring against rotation in a counter-clockwise direction-with respect to Fig- -ures 2 and- 4.

In a lock structure of the character described including a casing member and a key controlled lock cylinder member movable therein between predetermined limits in the performance of its normal locking function and removable from the casing when in a predetermined position beyond one of its normal limits of movement, means for preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position, comprising a stop abutment on the lock cylinder member, an annular spring substantially encircling the lock cylinder member and having a portion normally disposed in the path of said stop abutment, means for preventing relative rotation between the annular spring and the casing member, and means whereby the lock cylinder member cooperates with the casing member to maintain the annular spring in operative position.

In a lock structure of the character described including a bored casing and a key controlled lock cylinder movable in said casing bore between predetermined limits in the performance of its normal locking functions and removable from said bore when in a predetermined position beyond one of its normal limits of movement, said casing and lock cylinder having adjacent shoulders, and means for preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position at which it is removable from the casing bore comprising a ring like spring having a portion disposed between the shoulders of the casing and lock cylinder and a portion providing a stop, and an abutment on the lock cylinder engageable with said stop.

In a lock structure of the character described including a casing, a key controlled lock cylinder removable from the casing when in a predetermined position, means for preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position including a yieldable member movable to an inactive position to permit movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position upon application of a tool which is engageable with the key for controlling the lock cylinder and movable'therewith.
8. In a lock structure of the character described including a casing and a lock cylinder movable in the casing in the performance of its normal locking functions upon the insertion of a proper key therein and removable from the casing when in a predetermined position with respect thereto, and means for preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position including a stop member movable longitudinally of the lock cylinder, means whereby said longitudinally movable stop member may be moved to inactive position upon application of a tool which is engageable with the key.
9. In a lock structure of the character described including a bored casing and a lock cylinder rotatable therein in the performance of its normal locking functions, means for maintaining the lock cylinder assembled with the casing including a bayonet slot in the lock cylinder, a member to be driven from the lock cylinder and having a portion mounted in the casing adjacent the inner end of the lock cylinder, and means for transmitting rotation from the lock cylinder to said member comprising an eccentrically disposed cam projected from the inner end of the lock cylinder and received in a recess in said member, and a boss projected from said member and extended into the entrance of the lock cylinder bayonet slot.
10. In a lock structure of the character described including a bored casing and a lock cylinder rotatable therein in the performance of its normal locking functions, means for removably securing the lock cylinder in said casing bore including a bayonet slot at the inner end of the lock cylinder having its entrance opening to the extreme inner end of the lock cylinder, a member to be driven from the lock cylinder and having a portion disposed in the casing, and means for transmitting rotation from the lock cylinder to said member comprising a cam projected from the inner end of the lock cylinder diametrically opposite the entrance to its bayonet slot and received in a recess in said member, and a boss projected from said member diametrically opposite the cam to extend into the bayonet slot entrance and. close the same, the diametrically opposite relation of the cam and boss balancing the lock structure.
11. In a lock structure of the character described including a casing and a lock cylinder therein, inter-engaging abutments for maintaining the lock cylinder assembled with the casing, said abutments being disengageable upon movement of the lock cylinder to a predetermined relative position with respect to the casing, and means normally preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position including a lock washer like spring, and abutments on the lock cylinder and casing cooperable with the ends of said lock washer like spring.
12. In a lock structure of the character described, including a bored casing and a key controlled lock cylinder within the casing and removable therefrom when in a predetermined position with respect to the casing, means for preventing movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position comprising, an abutment carried by the casing adjacent the mouth of its bore, a second abutment carried by the lock cylinder and engageable with the casing carried abutment, and said casing carried abutment being yieldable longitudinally of the casing and lock cylinder to enable passage of said abutments past each other.
13. In a lock structure of the character described including a casing and a lock cylinder removably mounted in the casing, key controlled locking tumblers carried by the cylinder and engageable with the casing to secure the lock cylinder in locked position, said tumblers being retractable by a proper key to free the lock cylinder for movement between predetermined limits for the performance of its normal locking functions, said lock cylinder being removable from the casing when in a predetermined position beyond one of its normal limits of movement, and cooperating abutments carried by the casing and lock cylinder, said abutments being engageable with each other to define one of the normal limits of movement of the lock cylinder, and thus prevent movement of the lock cylinder to said predetermined position and one of said abutments being spring urged to its operative position and accessible from the front end of the lock to enable the same to be moved to an inoperative position allowing movement of the cylinder to said predetermined position.
