An axial tumbler lock comprises a lock housing 12, a lock barrel 14 having a fixed part 18 and a part 16 rotatable in the housing between locking and unlocking positions, a series of circumferentially spaced tumbler pins 26, 27 slidable axially in said barrel and projecting forwardly therefrom, the tumbler pins being split, the splits being aligned with the joint between the two parts of the barrel prior to rotation of the rotatable part, characterized by a key 31 which includes a cylindrical body having a tubular shank 58. said shank being provided with a series of pin-engaging fins 30, 30a thereon for engagement and depression of the tumbler pins, a fixed protective flange 42 in the forward portion of said housing, there being an opening 44 in said flange through which said shank is introduced into the lock, there also being provided a notch 102 and an extension slot 108 in said barrel, one of the fins 30a being received by an extension slot 46a in the protective flange, said one fin being wider than the remaining fins, the notch limiting axial movement of the key, said slot 46a in the flange in conjunction with said one fin preventing improper entry of the key and positioning same such that all fins are cut of alignment with the tumbler pins, said one fin entering the notch 102 in the barrel out of alignment with the extension slot 108 of the barrel wherein by rotation of the key after it has entered axially into the lock the fin and pins are aligned, said rotation also aligning said one fin 30a with the extension slot of the barrel so that further axial movement of the key can take place to depress the pins. The flange 42 also has slots 46 to receive the fins 30. The rotatable part of the barrel is connected to a turn button 18.
