The lock is further provided with adust cap or cover 6 having a rib or bead 8 formed on its outer edge which, when the cover is closed, is received in an annular groove 10 in the outer case 3, the groove surrounding the end of the key operated plug. The cover is provided with a knob or finger-piece 12 and is pivotally mounted and yieldingly pressed against the face of the lock case so as to enable it to be swung into and out of position over the keyhole and plug.
As shown, the mounting for the dust cap or cover comprises a bearing member in the form of a tubular screw plug 14., which is screw-threaded into the outer end of a cylindrical aperture 16 formed in the face of the outer lock case 8 and extending part way through the lock case. A pin '18 extends through and is mounted to slide in the bore of the plug 14 and has heads 20 formed on its ends. The dust cap or cover is pivotally mounted on the pin 18 adjacent its outer head 20, and the cover is yieldingly pressed toward the face of the lock case by means of a spring 22 coiled about the pin 18 and interposed between the inner end of the plug 14 and a washer 24 on the pin adjacent its inner head 20. With this construction it will be apparent that when the cover is closed it is firmly held in position with its beaded edge 8 received in the annular groove 10, the yielding connection being such as to enable the cover to be easily swung upwardly out of the groove 10 and. around so as to expose the keyhole.
The screw plug H is provided with a screw-driver slot 26 so as to enable the implement shown in Fig. 4, which is provided with a flat-handle piece 28 and upwardly turned lugs 30, to be inserted between the cover and the outer end of the screw plug (Fig. 3) so as to enable the lugs to be received in the slot 26 to enable the screw plug to be rotated by means of said imple ment to screw and unscrew it in the aperture 16. It will be apparent that this construction enables the cover plate and its mounting to be conveniently inserted in and removed from the lock case as a unit, the parts of the mounting being assembled with the cover previously to being applied to the lock case.
Heretofore, in mounting the dust cap or cover plate it has been custon'iary to rivet the washer on the inner end of the pivot pin after the pin has been inserted in an aperture in the lock case, the spring for pressing the cover against the face of the lock case being interposed between said Washer and a shoulder formed on the wall of said aperture. Such manner of mounting the cover, however, has been found to be objectionable, particularly when employed on a lock case or shell of considerable length, as it is necessary to drill completely through the lock case, employ a pivot pin of sub stantially the length of the aperture thus formed, and thereafter rivet the washer on the end of the pin, a difficult operation resulting in a pern'ianent connection. It will be apparent, however, that in the present construction these disadvantages of the prior constructions are overcome, as the heading or riveting of both ends of the pin and the assembling of the parts of the mounting is performed before applying the cover plate to the lock case.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, the cover plate 32 is shown applied to the inner cylinder or case 3 1- of a pin tumbler lock, the pivot pin 18, tubular plug 14- and spring 22 constituting the mounting for the cover 32, being arranged in an aperture 34 in the lock case corresponding to the aperture 16 in the lock case of the construction above described.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications Without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is:
1. A lock comprising case having a hole and an aperture in one face thereof, abearing member screw-threaded into said aperture, a pin extending through and mounted to slide in an axial bore in said bearing member, a cover for the hole mounted on the outer end of said pin, and spring interposed between the inner end of said bearing member and a shoulder on said pin for yieldingly pressing said cover against said face of the lock case.
2. A look comprising a case having a hole and an aperture in one face thereof, a hearing member removably mounted in said aperture, a pin extending through and mounted to slide in an axial bore in said bearing memher, a cover for the hole mounted on the outer end of said pin, and means comprising a spring acting on the pin to yieldingly press said cover against said face of the lock case.
3. A lock comprising a case having a hole and an aperture in one face thereof, a plug screw-threaded into said aperture, a pin extending through and mounted to slide in an axial bore in said plug, a cover for the hole pivotally mounted on the outer end of said pin, and a spring interposed between the inner end of said plitig and a shoulder on said pin for yieldingly pressing said cover against said face of the lock case, the outer end of said plug being recessed so as to enable a suitable implement to be inserted between the cover and the face of the lock case to enter said recessed portion whereby said plug may be rotated to insert and remove it.
4. A lock comprising a case having a hole and an aperture in one face thereof, a plug screw-threaded into said aperture, a pin extending through and mounted to slide in an axial bore in said plug and having a head on each end, a cover for the hole pivotally mounted on said pin adjacent .its outer head, and aspring interposed between the inner end of said plug and said inner head for yieldingly pressing said cover against the face of the lock case.
5. A lock comprising a case having a hole and an aperture in one. face thereof, a bearing member removably mounted in said aperture, a pin extending through and mounted to slide in an axial bore in said bearing member, a cover for the hole mounted on the outer end of said pin, and means comprising a spring acting on the pin to yieldingly press said cover against said face of the lock case. said cover and case having one a grooved depression and the other an extended projection adapted to enter said depression when the cover is closed.
