This invention relates to devices serving to clamp the hair and protect the scalp during hair waving operations, and to correlated inventions and discoveries appertaining thereto.

In general, it is the object of the invention to. provide a device of the character described which will efficiently accomplish .thepurpOses for-which it is intended, which may be readily and economically manufactured and assembled,

and which may be manipulated with extreme ease. I

Another object of the invention is to provide a protector clip which will'hold the hair taut while the same is wound upon, a curler and while it is undergoing treatment.

The particular clip exemplified comprises a pair-.;of metallic arms9 and 10 hingedly con-.- nected at 1 1 and having securedto the. upper surface thereof supplemental members 12' and 13; respectively, serving to provide- longitudinal channels 14 and 15 respectively in which are in serted cushion members 16 which may be composedof any suitable material, such as rubber.

As exemplified, the forked end 28 cooperates with the attaching block 29 to resist rotation, whereas the curler is adapted to be rotated when desired in one. direction by means of a knob 31; A type of curler well adapted for use in connection with 10 the present invention is exemplified in my copending application, Serial No. 311,994, filed October 12, 1928.

It is desirable that the arms of the clamp be drawn tightly together so as to press the cushions firmly against the hair, and to form an effective seal between the waving apparatus and the scalp of the subject. To this end, the locking element 21 extends through a slot 32 at the rearof the channel 14 and is provided at its end with a ring 33 having a circular recess. Ex-

tending through the ring and displaced from the" center thereof toward the outer end of the locking element is a pin 34 on which there is mounted a lever 35 formed with a disc 36 fitted within the ring 33, so that when the lever is moved in a clockwise direction, the locking element 21 will be drawn inwardly to pull the arms of the clamp toward each other.

In order to effectively insulate the clamp and the heater held thereby from the scalp of the subject, a heat insulating strip'37 is secured in spaced relation to each of the arms Band 10, by

' 3'7 and 39, and any heat transfer by the connectingpins will be dissipated, so that danger of the transfer of a harmful amount of heat from the waving apparatus to the arms and thence to the scalp of the subject is eliminated.

It will thus be seen that a clamp is provided which is well adapted to hold the curling device, which can be put in place by one simple movement of the operator, which can be tightened by a second simple movement, and which is arranged to effectively protect the scalp of the subject.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In a protector clip'for use in hair waving operations, the combination of a pair of hingedly connected arms, means to support a curling rod on one of said arms, cushion members havingwide exposedsurfaces adapted to be pressed against each other when the arms'are, moved into closed position, means automatically and releasably to secure said arms in closed position, means associated with said securing means for drawing said arms closer together, and a plurality of spaced insulating strips secured to'the underside of each of said arms.

2. In a protector. clip for use in hair waving operations, the combination of a pair'of hingedly connected arms, a catch on one of said arms, a locking element on the other of said arms adapted to cooperate with said catch to hold the arms in closed position, a circular recessformed-in said locking element, a disc 'fitting within said recess, means for pivotally mounting said locking element, said means including a. pin

1 positioned eccentrically of said disc and of said recess, and a lever secured to said disc and arranged to impart rotary movement thereto for drawing'said arms together.

3. Ina protector clip for use in hair waving I operations, the combination of a pair of hingedly connected arms, means including a locking element for releasably securing said arms one to the other, said locking element being formed with a recess, a disc fitting within said-recess, a pivot pin positioned'eccentrically 'of said disc,

In a protector clip for use in hair waving operations, the combination of a pair of hingedly connected arms, forked means to support a hair waving device onone of said arms, a cushion memberon each of said arms adapted to be pressed against tresses of hair to clamp the same tightly when said arms are in closed position, means automatically and releasably to secure said arms in closed position, a lever associated with the last-mentioned means and arranged to draw said arms tightly against each other to increase the clamping action thereof, an insulating member secured in spaced relation to each of said arms, and a supplemental insulating member secured in spaced relation to each of the aforesaid insulating members.

5. In apparatus for use in hair waving operations, the combination with a curling rod equipped with an attachingelement adapted for relative rotation with respect thereto, of a .pro-' tector clip comprising a pair ofhingedly connected arms adapted to clamp tresses of. hair therebetween, and apair of supports'carried'on one of said arms, one of said supports-being adapt'ed'rotatably to hold said curling rod and the other of said supports being adapted to hold said attaching element'andto prevent the rotationof the same.

6. In apparatus for use in hair waving opera tions, the combination with a curling rod equipped'with an attaching element adaptedfforrelative rotation with respect thereto, of a protector clip comprising a pair of hingedly connected arms adapted 'to clamp tresses of'hair therebetween, a forked element for rotatably seedly-connected longitudinally-extending. arms arranged to clamp therebetweenlongitudinally extended series of strands of 'hair,.means automatically and releasably to secure said arms in clamping position, and manually-operable cam means to draw said arms more tightly against"- each other to increase the clamping actionthereof.

In a protector clip for use in hair waving operations, the combination of a pair of hingedly-connected arms, a curler-supporting bracket extending upwardly from each end of one of said arms directly above said arm, at least one of said brackets comprising a pair of prongs above said arm and adapted to receive therebetween a portion of a curling rod.

12. A hair curling apparatus comprising an elongated gripping block, a gripping bar operatively associated with one side edge of the gripping block so that a lock of hair may be releasably clamped between the gripping bar and the side of the gripping block, a spindle detachably mounted longitudinally of the gripping block in offset relation in a vertical plane to the opposed portions of the gripping bar and the gripping block, and means for holding the spindle relative to the gripping block.

13. In a hair curling device in combination a curling rod and a protector clip comprising a pair of hingedly connected arms adapted toclamp tresses of 'hair therebetween, and means at the ends of said clip to support said rod in to the line of clamping ac- ERNEST O. FREDERICS.
