f My invention relates to. the hair waving art and consists in a novel protector clamp for use in connection. with a heater and curling rod such, for example, asis disclosed in Patent No. 1,778,870 issued to me October 21,1930. y n

In using the types ofclamps now gene-rally known to the hair waving trade, a coil of hair wrapped around the curling rod is seated against the upper surface of the clamp and directly above the opening between the jaws. Upstanding elements are. provided at each end of the clamp forsupporting vthe rod and for counteracting the tendency of the hair to straighten and pull the rod to one side. These elements are usually located on the connecting link atene end of the jaws and the locking linkv at the other endr and frequently interfere with the operator in seg- 20 regating,`windin`g, and wrapping the hair and applying the heaters.

The main object of my present invention' is to provide a protector clamp in which an upstanding rod supporting. element is necessary at one end of the device only'.v y

Another object is to provide amorek 'efficient and` durable locking means for the clamp. Y f lA Another object is to improve the hairengaging surface of the clamping jaws tomore securely grip a strand of hair. The ridge 21 has the further function that if the clamping jaws become distorted sufficiently to cause link 15 to pass over the top oi jaw 1, the engagement of the lower and longer leg of link 15 with the end of the ridge will indicate to the operator that the clamp is not properly locked. In the normal locked position, the upper leg oit link 15 engages the end of the ridge, as shown in Figure 5.

In the permanent waving operation, a strand of hair S, previously segregated, -is clamped between the jaws of the protector clamp and then wound upon the curling rod in the usual manner. When the coil is wound down to the clamp, the portion of rod 23 outside of the ratchet wheel 14 is seated on the arcuate top edge of upstanding support 10 and ratchet 14 is engaged by pawl 11. Further turning ot the rod by handle 24 will tighten the coil and pawl 11 will prevent the strand from unwinding.

I have found that by seating the coiled strand on one side of the opening between the jaws instead of directly over the opening, as is the usual case with clamps now in use, the hair pulls the rod directly downward and there is practically no tendencyto pull the curling rod to one side and the coil will be held securely in alignment with the jaws of the clamp without the use of any supporting elementon the free end thereof.

The form of mv invention described is particularly adapted for use in croquinole waving. but it will be understood that the principles of the invention maybe equally advantageously embodied ,in a clamp for use in cork screw waving` as disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 481.504. filed September 12. 1930. The structure may also be modified as to various other details without departing from the spirit of the invention and T. contemplate the esclusive use of all such variations as come within the scope of mv claims. A clamp for a hair curling device comprising a pair of aw members, a. link having pivotal connections with corresponding ends of said members, locking means on the other ends of said members, and curling rod supporting means comprising an upstanding element at one end of said jaw members and a longitudinal seat in one of said members.

3. A clamp Jfor a hair curling device including cooperating` jaw structures adapted to grip a strand ot hair near its roots, and an element projecting from at least one of said. structures and adapted to seat a coil of hair and to be gripped between the holding jaws of aheater.

In a hair curling device, a clamp including a pair of hair gripping jaws, a link pivoted to corresponding ends oii' said aws, locking means on the other ends of said jaws, and a curling rod and an element on said link for supporting said rod, one of said jaws having a longitudinal arcuate recess in alignment with said element for seating a coil of hair 'wrapped around said rod.

5. In a hair curling device, a clamp member including a pair of aws having pivotal connection at one end, one of said jaws having its outer corner at the free end cut away and provided with a wear resisting insert, and locking means secured to the free end of the other jaw, said means including a link and a lever pivoted to said link and having a cam at one end adapted to engage said insert during the locking movement of said lever.

i 6. A clamp for a hair curling device comprising a pair of jaws having pivotal connection at one end and locking means at the other, the meeting faces of said jaws being respectively concave and convex and being corrugated longitudinally to more securely grip a strand of hair.

7. A clamp for a hair curling device including a pair of aw members having pivotal connection at one end and locking means at the other, said means including a cam lever, and a U-shaped link pivoted to one of said members and having one leg longer than the other, the longer leg thereof being adapted to ht into a horizontal groove in the other jaw member when said clamp is in normal Vlocked position.

A clamp for a hair curling device including a pair of jaw members having pivotal connection at one end and locking means at the other, one of said jaws having a proj ection on its upper surface nea-r' the locking end, said means including a cam lever and a U-shaped link having a shorter and a longer leg, said legs being adapted when in the normal locked position to respectively rest on top ot said aw members and it into a groove in their free ends, and said longer leg beingl adapted to engage said projection when said members become distorted to prevent the 'false locking of the device.

9. In a hair curling device, a clamp including a pair of'j aw members, a link having pivotal connections with corresponding ends of said members, and locking means on the other ends oit said jaws, a longitudinal ridge projecting from the upper face of one of said jaws, a curling rod, an element o n said link for supporting said rod, and a heater including hair gripping jaws adapted to extend beneath a coil of hair wrapped around said rod and to receive said ridge between them.

10. In a hair curling device, a clamp including al pair of'jaw members having pivotal connection at one end, and a curling rod adapted to receive a coil of hair, there being a ridge projecting 'from the upper face ofone of said jaws adjacent its inner edge having an arcuate top for seating a coil of hair wrapped around said rod.

11. In a hair curling device, a hair clamp including a pair of elongated jaws for gripping a strand of hair between them,fa curling rod for winding the strand into an elongated roll,'and Ineans'on said clamp for engaging said rod to prevent its rotation to unwind said roll, one of said jaws having an element for seating said roll with one side thereof substantially directly above the hair clamping face of that jaw whereby the portion of the strand of hair from the roll to the jaw will hold the roll in alignment with its seat when the roll is tightened. ,e
