I. S. COFFIN. CANS AND CARRIERS FOR MILK Patented July 24, 1877.

N, FETERQ PHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C- UNITED S'mns ISAAC S. COFFIN, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY B. FAIRBANKS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS AND CARRIERS FOR MILK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,321, dated July 24, 1877 application filed June 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. COFFIN, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can- Tops, of which the following is a specifica- IIIOD This invention relates to certain improvements in the caps or covers for cans or other vessels, and is particularly designed for milkcans, its object being to provide a simple and effective cover, by means of which the can may be hermetically sealed or opened, when required, with little inconvenience.
My invention consists in a I cover or cap hinged to one side of the mouth of the can, or an annular seat formed thereon or attached thereto, said cap being provided with an annular groove in which is secured a suitable packing, said groove being adapted to set over the mouth of the can, and form a tight joint therewith when the cap is secured, the upper side of said cap being provided with upright standards diametrically opposite each other, in which is journaled a rock-shaft, provided with hooks at each end, adapted to engage lugs on the can or the seat, to which the cap is hinged, the rock-shaft at its center being provided with a cam-lever, which serves to set the hooks under the lugs, and secure the cover, and also as a handle to swing back the cover when released, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of the upper part of a canwith my improved cap secured thereto. Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a sectional view, of the same.
The letter A represents a milk-can of any convenient pattern, in the present instance being formed with a contracted neck, B, to the mouth of which the cap is attached.
The letter C represents an annular seat, which maybe formed on or attached to the neck of the can at its mouth.
To the side of the annular seat adjoining the handle is hinged a disk-shaped cap or cover, D, adapted to fit upon the said seat, and provided with anannular groove, d, on its under side which is packed with suitable packing, said groove being adapted to set over the edges of the annular seat when the cap or cover is down.
The letter E represents two standards arranged diametrically opposite each other on the top of the cap or cover D, said standards being booked at their upper ends, in which hooks are held the opposite ends of a rockshaft, F, the extremities of which are bent downward and hooked, so as to engage the lugs Gon the neck of the can or the cap-seat thereof, and confine the cap in position, as hereinafter explained.
The letter H represents a cam-lever, secured to the rock-shaft F, the cam portion of which may be brought to bear upon the center of the cap at the same time that the hooks on the rock-shaft engage the lugs on the neck of the can or cap-seat. Said lever is made concave on one side to form a bearing for the thumb, when used as a handle for turning back the cover.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the foregoing description.
To close the can, the cap is turned down upon its seat and the lever turned so as to cause the hooks on the rock-shaft to engage the lugs on the can. At the same time the cam portion of the lever begins to bear upon the top' of the cap, causing the cap to hermetically close the can when the lever is at the end of its movement.
To open the can, the motion of the lever is reversed, and after the hooks are freed from the lugs the lever falls in position to be used as a thumb-handle, for turning back the cap, so as to uncover the mouth of the can.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's-- l. The combination, with a milk-can, of a hinged cap, provided with a rock-shaft having hooked ends adapted to engage with lugs attached to the can, and with a cam-lever, adapted to bear uponthe top of the can, and secure the cap hermetically thereon, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the cap-seat secured to the neck of the can, the cap hinged there- 011,2!16. provided with an annaulargqroo-we on ,Ingtestimony that I claim the foregoingiI itsu'nder's'ide containing pack-ing,-alnd adapted 1 have hereunto-set my hand in the preseuceiof t0 fit over the cap-seat, and with a cam-lever the subscribing witnesses.
and rock-shaft, provided with hooked ends ISAAC S. OOFFIN. adapted to engage upon lugs 0n the can, Witnesses:
substantially as and for the purposes set CHAS. .T, NEWMAN,
forth. RICHARD J. RGQQD'WIN.
