This invention relates to certain improvements in vanity cases and has been designed especially for use with loose powder.

It is the especial object of the present invention to provide an improved powder holder which is so arranged as to effectually prevent escape of powder from the holder.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a powder holder which can be easily positioned in the vanity case with which it is to be used so as to provide a simple and cheap assembly.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a vanity case and holder of attractive appearance and of simple form so that it may be economically manufactured, and which shall be durable.

With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Generally, the invention consists in a vanity case or box having a body and a cover preferably associated on a hinge combined with a novel powder holder comprising two parts secured together with a sealing medium, as felt, cloth or paper, between the parts which extends inwardly toward the powder well, the holder being provided with a cover and held frictionally in the case, so as to be readily replaceable and removable.

The invention may be embodied in vanity cases of various configurations, the holder, of course,

having the same general shape. The case selected to illustrate the invention is generally circular and comprises a cover A and a body B which are preferably concave in cross-section and preferably pivotally associated on a hinge C. The bottom of the case B is provided with a side wall 1 which is slightly inset to form a shoulder 2 forming a stop for the side wall 3 of the top A, 'this' wall telescoping over the upper edge of the wall 2 of the body A and forming a neat joint when the parts are closed.

The cover or top A is, in the box or case shown, provided with a toilet article, as a mirror 4, held in place by a bezel 5 frictionally held in place in the cover. As usual in this type of case or box, a spring catch 6 is provided for holding the cover and body closed, this being provided with the usual manual release 7 for operating the parts.

In accordance with the invention, there is provided an improved powder holder capacitated to be positioned in the body B of the box. The particular construction of this powder holder may be, of course, somewhat varied, but as shown this holder, which is marked generally 8 (Figure 4), comprises a top portion 9 and a bottom portion 10. The top portion is in the form of a ring or annulus having a ledge .l1 formed with a depending peripheral outer flange 13, the walls of which are indented as at 14, 15 to form

Pivoted to the ledge 11 is a cover 18 having a peripheral flange 19, slightly beveled and dimensioned to overlap on the inner edge of the annulus 11, as clearly shown in Figure 2. The cover is also dished inwardly to form a receptacle for a powder puff 20, and this dishing in forms a wall 2l, again referred to.

The inner edge of the annulus is also, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, slightly downwardly turned, as again referred to.

The bottom part 10 of the holder is dish-shaped to form a receptacle for the powder, the bottom 22 of the part 10 being concaved to match the concave bottom B of the case. These two parts of the box are locked together in any suitable manner, as by inwardly extending nibs 29 formed in the flange 13 of the top 9, the

ledge 24 of the bottom engaging under these nibs.`

In accordance with the invention, a sealing medium is provided, which is locked in .position between the top and the bottom parts of the holder, and this sealing medium is dimensioned so that it will extend inwardly toward the powder well or receptacle formed in the bottom member. While this sealing medium may be of various materials, such as cloth, paper, or the like, in the particular construction shown this sealing medium is an annulus 30, of felt, which is cut, as shown in Figure 6, to t the parts and to extend inwardly toward the powder well, as clearly indicated at 31 in Figures 2, '7 and 8. With this construction, the felt annulus is clamped between the two parts of the holder and when the cover is in position is engaged by the bottom of the cover, so as to form an effective seal past which it is practically impossible for powder to escape. Thus a very simple but at the same time effective leak-proof holder for loose powder has been provided.

The powder holder may be secured in the vanity case in any suitable manner. In the particular construction illustrated the holder is provided with lugs 32, one of which is shown in Figure 7, which are arranged to engage under the holder 2 of the bottom B of the vanity case before referred to, thus locking the parts in position.

A catch of any suitable character may be provided for holding the cover of the powder holder in position. As shown, this catch consists of a U-shaped loop 33 formed integrally with the cover member 18, this catch passing through an aperture 34 formed in the ledge 11 of` the top member 9 and the cutout 28 formed in the bottom member 10. One leg, as the leg 35, of this U-shaped catch is provided with a nib 36 which engages under the edge of the ledge 24 of the bottom member 10, as shown in Figure 8.

The cutouts 16, 1'7, 25, 26 in the holder members are provided to avoid the hinge C of the vanity box and the catch 6, before referred to.

While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that certain changes and variations may be made in the specific construction shown and described and in the form and character of the sealing medium without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In a cosmetic container, a. body, a cover therefor, a powder holder secured in the body, said powder holder comprising a top member having a rim or ledge and a depending ange, a bottom member forming a powder holder and having a ange means for locking the two parts of the holder together, a sealing medium held between the parts and projecting inwardly beyond the flanges, and a cover for the holder engaging the sealing medium when in closed position.

2. In a cosmetic container, a body, a cover l therefor, a powder holder located in the body comprising an open top member and a bottom and a sealing medium locked between these parts and extending inwardly beyond the inner edge of the top member, and a cover for the holder.

3. In a cosmetic container, a body, a cover therefor, a powder holder secured in the body, said holder comprising a top member in the form of an annulus having a peripheral ledge and a depending ange, a bottom member having a flange and a rim or ledge, means for locking these parts together, a sealing disk held between the parts and projecting inwardly beyond the anges, and a cover for the holder pivoted to the top member and engaging the sealing disk when in closed position.

4. A loose powder holder arranged to be positioned in a box or case comprising an open top member and a bottom member forming a powder compartment between them, a ledge or rim on the top member, a rim on the bottom member, a sealing disk locked between the members and extending into the powder compartment, and a cover having a rim engaging the rim of the top member and a depending ange engaging the sealing disk when in closed position.
