VANITY CASE Filed July 6, 1950 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 zn d" Ma-IM Patented Apr. 2i, 1953 VANITY CASE Henry ChaimLerner, Birmingham; and Robert Nei'ischfil, Yardley, Birmingham England; assignors to Evans Components 00. Limited, Birmingham, England, a company of Great Britain Application July 6, 1950, Serial No. 172,212 InGrea't Britain March '31, 1950 stantially the same space as a powder compact of normal type.
According to the invention the improved vanity-case incorporates a body section the interior whereof is preferably partitioned to provide compartments for toilet'requisites and/or appurtenances, a hinged outer lid which conveniently can carry at its centre a box for a toilet preparation, said box being provided with an ornamented lid, an inner lid which-serves to closethe compartments aforesaid andwhich is recessed for the accommodation of a combined brush and comb or a separately formed brush and a separately formed comb and preferably a separately formed holder for lipstick or the like which is attached to the body of the case by means of a chain.
The invention also resides in a vanity case constructed; arranged and adapted for use substantially as will be described hereinafter.
The invention willnow be described with particular reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan of the improved vanity case with the outer lid closed.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the vanity case illustrated in Figure 1 with the outer lid open and the inner lid closed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the vanity case illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 with the outer and inner lids both open.
Figure 4 is a cross section of the vanity case illustrated in Figures 13 on an enlarged scale and with the fittings removed.
Figure 4A is a vertical section of the lipstick holder utilised in Figures 13 drawn to the same scale as Figure 4, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the vanity case illustrated in Figures 1-3 with the fittings shown separately, and the interior portion of the lipstick holder partly in section.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
As illustrated in the drawings the improved vanity case incorporates a bottom section II] and an outer lid I I which is hingedto the said bottom section ID as at I2. The bottom section II! and the lid II are provided with the respective por 2v Claims. (o1. 1.32 83) 2 tions I3 I I 32 of a spring catch fastening of known construction. v
Located within the bottom section is an annular insert I4 which is a press fit within the sai'd'bottom section It.
Hinged to'the insert Id at a position at right angles to the hinging position of the outer lid II is an inner lid I5 which is of dished formation, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The inner lid I5 and the insert I4 are provided with the respective portions I6I, I62 of a spring catch fastening also of known construction.
The insert I4 is provided around the inner periphery with a trough I4 I within whichis disposed a sealing ring I! of felt which when the inner lid I5 is closed presses on the under surface of the said inner lid 5' to constitute a powder tight seal.
The outer lid I I is formed at the centre'with a hole III through which is passed the annular wall of a cylindrical sheet metal box I8 the base of which is provided with a peripheral flange I8I which when the case is assembled prevents the box I8 from being withdrawn through the hole III.
The box I I8 which is intended to contain rouge is provided'with an ornamented press-on lid I82.
Mounted within the outer lid II on' the inner side is a mirror I9 the backing surface of which is in abutment with the base of the rouge box I8,
said mirror I9 being held in position by a retaining annulus.
Fixed to the center of the upper ide of the inner lid I5 is the male section 20 of a snap fastening the female section 2| of which is secured to the centre of the body section 22 of a composite brush and comb which is provided with bristles 23 along one edge and with comb teeth 24 along the opposite edge. The body section 22 is provided with rounded ends 22! and is adapted to fit within the recess in the dished inner lid I5.
At one side the body section 22 is recessed as at 222 to facilitate engagement of the body section 22 by the thumb nail of a user for effectin the removal of the body section 22.
The bottom section It is divided into two arouate compartments IOI, I02 of unequal size by a partition rib I 42 secured to the insert I4. The partition rib I 42 is of trough shape in cross section and contains a sealing strip "I of felt which makes a powder proof seal with the underside of the inner lid I 5 when the said lid is closed.
. The larger compartment IllI serves to contain face powder and is fitted with a powder sifter 25 and a powder puff 25 of arcuate formation and dimensions such that they both fit snugly within the compartment I I.
The smaller compartment I 02 serves to contain a fiat sheet metal scent bottle 26l of an arcuate formation and dimensions such that it will fit snugly Within the compartment 102.
Anchored to a shackle 21 I mounted on the hinge pin on which the outer lid turns is one end of a length of chain 212 the other end of which is anchored to the closed end of the outer casing 21 of a lipstick container.
As the lipstick container aforesaid isof known construction it will sufficeto say that the lipstick is pushed into the upper end of a cup 28 having a projection 29 adapted to ride within a straight groove 30! formed in the wall of a cylindrical container 30 and within a helical grove 31! formed in a surroundingsleeve 31 which is turnably mounted within the outermost sleeve 32; Thus by turning the sleeve 31 by means of its base 3| 2 .the cup 28' can be caused to move the lipstick in and out of the container 30 as required after i the removal of the inner section from within the outer casing 21.
The complete vanity case is intended to be carried in a bag or pochette which can be suspended from the wrist of the wearer.
It will be appreciated that by securing the combined brush and comb or a separately formed brush and a, separately formed comb to the inner lid, that the case can be opened without risk of the said combined brush and comb or the said separately formed brush or the said separately formed comb becoming detached.
It will be appreciated also that the improved vanity case contains the toilet requisites and appurtenances usually incorporated in the normal vanity case whilst the dimensions of the case and its weight compare favourably with those of the normal powder compact so that the case can be carried in a pochette suspended from the wrist of the owner without inconvenience, thus rendering the vanity case especially suitable for evening use and when dancing since the owner can carry the vanity case and any valuables contained in the pochette suspended from the wrist throughout an evening and so avoid the possibility of the loss of a case or of its contents by the placing and leaving of the case on a table when the owner rises for dancing.
Having thus disclosed our invention and described in detail an illustrative embodiment thereof, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A vanity case comprising a circular bottom section having an outer lid hinged thereto at one side and provided with a central aperture, a rouge box fitted in the aperture and having a retaining flange within the lid and a removable cover outside the lid, an annular insert fitted in the bottom section of the case and having an inner lid hinged thereto to swing about an axis at right angles to that of the outer lid, said insert being provided about its inner periphery with a continuous upwardly opening trough, a sealing ring contained in the trough of the insert and cooperating with the inner lid, and a transverse sealing partition extending across the insert and forming separate sealed compartments in the bottom section. 9
2. A vanity case comprising a circular bottom section having an outer lid hinged thereto at one side, an annular insert fitted in the bottom section of the case and having an inner dished lid hinged thereto to swing about an axis at right angles to that of the outer lid, a sealing ring carried by the insert and cooperating with the inner lid, a fastening element projecting from the concave face of the inner lid for detachable connection with a corresponding fastening element on a brush and comb device, and a transverse partition extending across the insert and dividing the bottom section into separate compartments.
