HUMIDIFIER Filed Sept. 28, 1931 INVENTOR wrmasg: ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 19, 1933 t w UNITED STATES PATENT m Robert '0. Barton, Pittsburgh, Pa.

2 Claims. (01'. 98-109) My present invention hasreference to a new Figures .1 and 2 in particular it will be noted and novel construction of humidifiers for the that the device comprises a pair of spaced angle register plates or frames for hot air heaters. side members 1. The outer edges of the side .Among the objects of the invention is the members arecut at an inward curvature from g 5 provision of a humidifier for this purpose which adjacent the upper ends tothe bottom thereof, so
comprises a frame to include side members havwhile the rear edges of the said side members: ing inwardly directed flanges against which the are straight and these edges are formed with register plateor frame abuts and which secure inwardly directed flanges 2. At a suitable disthe humidifier on the said frame, the side memtance above the lower ends of the sides, the said r bers being connected which provide the-top of sides are connected and held in spacedrelation 65 the body with a compartment for a water pan by an arched deflector plate 3. The outer edgethat ispreferably filled with an absorbent maof the deflectorplate is rounded inwardly upon terial, there being simple but novel means for itself to afford the same with an open bead 4, holding the pan in proper position, while a reand the sides have their outer edges provided movable flanged closure covers the pan and the with inwardly directed horizontal flanges 5 ar-. 70. topof the frame and frictionally engages with ranged below the bead. If desired, the bead the said frame in a manner to effectively sustain may have its ends crimped, over the flanges 5. the closure thereon and likewise to permit of the It will be noted that with this construction removal of the closure or the swinging of the the combined humidifier and heat deflector is said closure on the frame when additional water not provided with aback, except the lower end 75. is to be received in the pan. of the deflector plate whichis connected to the To the attainment of the foregoing the inflanges 2, and as previously inferred thefianges vention consists in the improvementhereinafter directly below the said deflectorplate 3 are de described and definitely claimed. signed to be passed between a vertically arranged In the drawing: hot air register plate and a wall, or thesaid 80.

of the device. there is a pan. The pan 6 has an inclined bot- Figure 4 is a sectional view approximately on tom and has its side and'rear edges flanged or the line 4--4 of Figure 3. I rolled outwardly, as at '7, and has its shallow Figure 5 is a detail enlarged sectional View front formed with a bead '8 to be received beapproximately on the line 5-5 of Figure 4. tween the lip l on the front and the flanges 5 on Figure 6 is a detail sectional view approxithe sides. The flanges 7 rest on the flanges '5 mately on the line 66 of Figure 2. and the rear rolled portion or flange of the pan The device is constructed of some suitable is received over the rear ends of the said flanges thin but, strong metal. In the form of the in- 5, the rear vertical flanges 2 being slitted at their 40 vention as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6 of the juncture with the horizontal flanges 5. The pan 95w drawing the device is designed to be inserted is designed to receive therein a moisture absorbbetween the wall and the hot air register plate ing and diffusing body 9, and this body is satuor frame, the said plate may, however, be rerated with Water, and additional water is supmoved to arrange the humidifier in proper posiplied thereto at desired intervals. The cap or tion and thereafter attached for contacting the cover for the pan isindicated by the numeral 10,
depending and side portions of the humidifier and is provided with apertures 10' disposed in and thus hold the same in a vertical position thetop thereof and arranged in alignment with against the wall while in Figures 3, 4 and 5 the side edges of the top as indicated in Figure the device is designed to be associated with a 6. It will be obvious that the apertures 10' allow floor register. In each instance, it will be noted for the escape ofmoisture from the body 9. The 7 as the description progresses that the device cover has its sides and ends flanged, the side not only affords -a humidifier but a deflector flanges indicated by the numeral 11 contacting for properly circulating the heated air that with the outer faces of the sides 1 of the frame, passes through the register. the rear flange indicated by the numeral. 12 be- 55 "2 Referring now to thedrawing in detail and ing designed to exert a frictional contact with the rear flange of the pan, .while the front flange 13 of the said cover is rounded and terminates in a round bead 14, the said bead designed to underline and to frictionally contact with the deflector plate 3 at the juncture of the bead 4 therewith. By this arrangement it will be noted that the cover is effectively sustained in position and that by gripping the lip 14 the said cover maybe raised off or swung from its rear on the frame so that a supply of water may be 7 open bead 18 is somewhat similar tothe bead 4 of the form as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6,. and the space between the deflector plate and top of the frame or body affords ample room for a pan 19 which is providecliwith side flanges 20 that rest upon inturned flangesZl formed on the upper edge of the sides 15 as clearly shown in Figure 5. The forward edge of the pan 19 is I, provided with a lip 22 that is outwardly directed and received between the deflector. plate 17 and its'bead 18 as shown in Figure 4,:while the rear edge of the deflector plate is flanged or crimped as at 23; and the crimped portion is disposed ,in contact with the'rear plate 16. The'cover for the form of the invention as shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5 is identical with that for the-form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6, therefore its struc ture, will not be described again, and it will be ,noted that the parts of the cover for the form as shown in Figures 3, 4- and 5 are indicated by the same reference numerals as the parts of the cover for the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 6:
The edges of the sides 15 are cut at inward curvatures, and the bottom ofthe sides 15 is formed with inwardly directed flanges 24 which together with an inturned flange 25 on the lower end of the back 16, are designed to be secured to a floor register and preferably between' the body of the register and its cover plate.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in theconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7 f
Having described the lIIVBDtlOILI claim:
1. A combined humidifier for hot air deflectors for the register plates of hot air furnaces, comprising a frame made up of two spaced side members having inwardly directed flanges to be contacted with and to be held in place by the register, anangle deflector plate connecting the sides and affording the top of the frame with an open compartment, a water pan having flanged edges'received in the compartment and resting on the top of the frame, and a flanged apertured cover plate arranged over the top of the frame to cover the pan and frictionally secured in operative position by its flanges.
2. A combined humidifier, and air deflector for the register plate'of hot air furnaces, including a frame comprising side members which have inwardly directed flanges over which the register plate is arranged and secured for sustaining the frame in vertical position, said'side members having widened upperends-a deflector plate arranged between and connected 'to the side members said deflector plate at its outer end being formed with a rearwardly' directed bead,
the side members having'on their upper ends in-' wardly directed flanges arranged below thebead, a water pan having an inclined bottom, and
having its side and rear edges formed with flanges and its front edge formed with'a lip to be received between the bead of said'deflector plate and the upper flanges of the frame, a removable flanged apertured cover for the frame,
the side flanges of the cover designed for fricti'onal engagement With the sides of the frame and the front flange being archedidownwardly and terminating in a bead which underlies and frictionally contacts with the deflector plate to cooperate with theside'flangesof the coverto secure the latter in operative position."
