Claims.
This invention relates to ventilators and particularly to air ventilators for positioning in an opening in walls.
An object of the present invention is the provision of av ventilator in which the capacity thereof is greatly increased in proportion to the overall size of the ventilator structure, as compared with previously known ventilators.
As is well known, ventilators of the type herein referred to comprise a casing or housing, and diagonal louvers; the louvers are positioned diagonally to prevent rain or snow from entering through the ventilators. Such diagonal or inclined disposition of the louvers, and the heusing construction heretofore employed restricted the capacity which the ventilator would have but for the positioning of the louvers.
It is therefore another object of the present invention to provide an air ventilator construction in which louvers are positioned diagonally,
2 top piece 24 (Figure 5). The respective pieces 2i), 22 and 24 making up the supporting plate I8 are made separate for manufacturing purposes, but if desired it can be made integral. The
parts making up the plate I3 are secured tosubstantially perpendicular to the plane of the but in which a capacity commensurate with the outline area of the opening of the ventilator is attained.
With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the construction, arrange ment and combination of the various parts of my device whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring now in detail to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a wall I2 having a Ventilating opening I4 therein in which is secured the ventilator I6 of the present invention.
The ventilator I6 includes a front or supporting plate I8 which will be referred to as having an outer side and an inner side. The outer and inner side thereof will have reference to Figure 1, the outside being at the right. The supporting plate I8 is formed of sheet metal and comprises side pieces 20, a bottom piece 22, and a plate I8. The bottom edges of the side flanges 32 are inclined upwardly and inwardly as will be evident from Figure 5.
The innner marginal portion of the bottom piece 22, at the opening 3E, is bent upwardly and inwardly to form a ange 34, to conform to the inclination of the bottom edges of the side anges 32. The ange 34 has turned-over end portions 36, spot welded to the lower edges of the side anges 32. The upper marginal edge of the flange 34, of the bottom piece 22 is bent upwardly, as indicated at 38, as seen in the drawing.
A plurality of louvers are secured between the side flanges 32 by means of downturned ends 42, formed on the louvers, which are spot welded to the side flanges 32. The louvers 40 are positioned generally parallel with the iiange 34 and are spaced apart vertically through the height of the side anges 32. The lower, horizontal edges of the louvers 40 are turned downwardly, as shown at 4I, and the upper edges turned upwardly, as shown at 43, for additional bailling of the air entering through the ventilator. The upper edges 43 of the louvers 4U, are spaced slightly outwardly from the inner Vertical edges of the side flanges 32, and the upper edge of the uppermost louver 4E) terminates closely adjacent the upper edge of the side flanges 32.
A screen member, indicated in its entirely at 4t, is employedfor covering the exposed open ing of the ventilator and the positioning of such screen member constitutes a principal part of the present invention. The screen member 44 includes a piece of screen or other mesh material 36 and a reinforcing strip surrounding the screen. The reinforcing strip includes side strip elements :i3 and 5u which are secured to the screen as by spot-welding or other means, and are narrow so as not to detract materially from the total area of the screen 4G. A dot-dash line is indicated at 52 in Figure 7 this being a breaking point in the screen when it is employed in the ventilator. The lower portion of the screen member 44 below the line 52 is placed against the upwardly extending portions 43, of the louvers 40, the width of the screen member being substantially the width of the opening 3S and the distance between the side flanges 32, with the bottom of the screen seated on the inclined flange 34, as seen in Figure 4. The upper portion of the screen member 44 above the line 52 is bent at right angles to the remaining portion and is positioned over the upper edge of the upwardly extended portion 43,. of the uppermost louver 4Q. Thus, said bent portion of the screen extends across the perimetric extremities of the inwardly extending flange, which con'- stitutes a projection of the effective opening 35. The upper portion of the screen member and the upper reinforcing strip 5E]v is then positioned adjacent the upper marginal edge of the opening 30, on the inner side of the plate I8. The inner marginal edge of the top piece 24, at the opening 3G, is bent inwardly as indicated at 54, to form a support for the upper edge of the screen member, as seen in Figure 4.
The vertical terminal edges of the side flanges 32, are then turned over, toward each other, as indicated at 55, and crimped against the side reinforcing strips 48 of the screen member. Likewise the upper edges of the side anges 32 are turned over toward each other, as indicated at 58, and crimped down against the reinforcing strips :i3 on the screen member, which then binds the upper reinforcing strip 50 against the turned in portion 54 of the front plate I8. The screen member 44 is thereby held in place by the turned over portions of the side flanges 32.
One or more lugs or brackets 6B are secured to the inner surface of the plate I8 above the ventilator opening 3G, for positioning adjacent the upper edge of the opening in the wall of the building, to insure providing adequate space between the uppermost louver 4e and the top edge of the opening in the wall, so as to permit air to pass upwardly through the horizontal portion of the screen 46.
Heretofore, in ventilators of this general type, a solid plate is placed across the tops of the side flanges 32, forming a ange leading inwardly from the opening in the front plate. Because of the diagonal disposition of the louvers, air passing above the top louver was prevented from entering the building. A ventilator of such prior construction, when made in the proportions and form as illustrated, would reduce the capacity of the effective Ventilating opening by one-fourth. However, in the present case, with the provision of an opening above the top louver 40, air passing through the opening 3i] above the top louver passes into the building, the same area for air to travel without restriction is provided at the inner ends of the louvers as is provided at the opening 3i) at the outer ends of the louvers. It will therefore be seen that the capacity of the ventilator of the present invention is greatly increased, and more particularly to the extent of one-third more than was heretofore attained.
It will be understood of course that the flanges 32 and 34 may be formed separate from the plate i8 and later secured thereto, instead of forming them integral therewith as in the present case. It will also be understood that the thickness of the various elements of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing are exemplary, and are exaggerated to some extent. For example, the greater part of the ventilator structure is made from sheet metal and although the plate I3 is made up of separate pieces and lapped, the thickness of the metal is small enough that the total effect is a unitary piece of thin sheet metal. The edges of the metal are rolled to present a smooth finish.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an economical device results from the present invention, and what is more important, the efficiency of the device is improved by the increased capacity of the ventilator.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, manifestly it is susceptible of modification and rearrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. I do not, therefore, wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the precise form herein disclosed, except as I may be so limited by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A ventilator comprising, a front'plate having an opening therein, flanges secured to said front plate at opposite sides of said opening, a plurality of spaced-apart louvers secured to said flanges and positioned in the projection of said opening, and a strip of screen material having a portion secured to said flanges across the openings between said louvers and across the upper open area above said louvers between said flanges.
2. A Ventilator comprising, a supporting plate having a polygonal opening therein, flanges secured to the marginal edges of the perimeter of said openings at the sides and bottom thereof, a plurality of spaced-apart louvers secured to said side flanges in the projection of said opening, and a strip of screen material secured to said flanges across the openings between said louvers and across the upper open area above said louvers between said side flanges.
3. A ventilator for use in a wall and having an outer and inner side, comprising, a supporting plate having a polygonal opening therein, a bottom flange secured to the bottom marginal edge of said opening and extending inwardly and upwardly therefrom, side flanges secured to the side marinai edges of said opening and extending inwardly therefrom, a plurality of spaced-apart louvers secured between said side flanges and disposed substantially parallel with sad bottom iange, the space dened by said side flanges above said louvers opening upwardly to form a vertical air passageway, the inner edge of the uppermost louver terminating substantially in register with the upper extremity of said side flanges, and a screen secured to said flanges, across the openings between said louvers, and across the upper edges of said side flanges substantially in line with the upper marginal edge of said opening.
A ventilator for use in a wall and having an outer and inner side, comprising, a supporting plate having a polygonal opening therein, a bottom flange secured to the bottom marginal edge of said opening and extending inwardly and upwardly therefrom, side flanges secured to the side marginal edges of said opening and extending inwardly therefrom, a plurality of spaced-apart louvers secured between said side flanges and disposed substantially parallel with said bottom flange, the space defined by said side flanges above said louvers opening upwardly to form a Vertical air passageway, the inner edge of the uppermost louver terminating substantially in register with the upper extremity of said side anges, a screen secured to said iianges across the opening between said louvers and across the upper edges of said side iianges to the upper marginal edge of said opening, the ventilator being adapted to be fitted to an opening in the wall of greater height than said side flanges, and a bracket secured tothe inner surface of said supporting plate spaced above the upper marginal edge of said opening therein and extending inwardly therefrom, said bracket being adapted for engaging the upper marginal edge of the opening in the wall and thereby effective for positioning the ventilator so that the upper ends of said side anges are spaced below the upper marginal edge of the opening.
5. A ventilator construction, comprising, a
supporting plate having an outer and inner side and an opening therein, side and bottom lianges secured to the respective side and bottom marginal edges of said opening and extending inwardly therefrom, the upper marginal edge of said opening having an inturned bead, a plurality of spaced-apart louvers secured between said side flanges, and a screen member having a lower portion positioned across the inner edges of said louvers and covering the openings between said louvers, said screen meinber having an upper portion extending across the top of said louvers, said upper portion terminating adjacent the upper marginal edge of said opening in engagement with the upper surface of .said bead, the inner and upper marginal edges of said side flanges having turnedover portions, the lower portion of said screen niem- -ber being secured ybetween said turned over portions and said louvers, and the upper portion being secured between said turned over portions and said bead.
