(Cl. 122-476) This invention relates to a novel and improved superheater, the novel features of which will be best understood from the following description and the annexed drawings, in which I have shown a selected embodiment of the invention and in which:

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the invention is shown in connection with a furnace having a combustion chamber 1 above which is disposed'a bank of water tubes 2 connected to downtake headers 3 and uptake headers 4, these headers communicating with a steam and water drum 5.
' The headers are extended beneath the bank of tubes and have their lower ends connected by a plurality of rows of water tubes 6 and '7.
The steam from the drum 5 is led to a superheater 8 disposed above the water tubes 2. Hot gases rising from the furnace chamber pass over the water tubes and the superheater 8 in a known manner and in a plurality of passes, escaping through an outlet 9. One of the passes is formed between the uptake headers 4 and a cross baflle.

Disposed beneath the baflle 11 is a row of superheater tubes 12 here shown as rectangular in cross section and placed closely together and extending. parallel to the water tubes. The baffle 11 may be supported on these superheater tubes. The inlet header 13 of the superheater is disposed adjacent the lower end of the cross battle and adjacent the inner end of the baiile 11, and preferably is placed between these baffles, as indicated. 7 A suitable connection 14 leads from the superheater 8 to the inlet header, so as to connect the superheaters in tandem.
The inlet header 13 may besupported inany suitable manner, but is here shown as bolted at 1% to the, plates forming part of the cross baffie 10. The outlet header 15 is preferably disposed adjacent the downtake headers 3 and may be supported in any suitable manner as by straps 16 suspended from the water tubes 2. Suitable tile 17 may be disposed between the header and the tubes 6, so as toclose the space therebetween and to protect the header.
As best shown in Figs. 3, t and 5, the tubes 12 have their ends formed in bends 18 where they are secured to the header 13, alternate tubes having their ends secured to the header in different radial planes. Secured to and preferably pivotally mounted on the header adjacent these bent ends is a plurality of supports 19 here shown as formed in segments conforming to the curvature of the bends, and having projecting ribs 20 thereon adapted to engage in corresponding recesses in segmental tile 21. These ribs terminate in inwardly extending ribs 22 to limit movement of the tile on the supports. By this arrangement, the support and tile may be moved to different positions, as required by the position of the bends 18. The space between the uppermost segmental tile 21 and the lower end of the cross baffle 10 may be closed by a plurality of courses of tile 23 which may be supported on the segmental tile 20.
Referring now to Fig. 6, there is shown a different embodiment of the invention, in which the superheater tubes 12 are disposed at a horizontal angle to the water tubes 6, so that a portion of each superheater tube is vertically above a water tube and so that another portion thereof is vertically over the space between adjacent water tubes.
I claim:-
1. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a bank of water tubes disposed above said chamber, a cross baiile extending through said bank and defining one side of a gas pass, a second baffle extending-from the lower end of said cross baffle beneath said bank,
a superheater comprising tubes, disposed beneath said secondbafiie and supporting it and extending lengthwise of said water tubes, headers disposed adjacent the opposite ends of said second baffle and connected to said superheater tubes, and a row of water tubes extending lengthwise of the superheater tubes and disposed between them and the chamber, the row of superheater tubes being generally parallel to the last mentioned row of water tubes with tubes extending in a slightly oblique relationship to the water tubes below.
2. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a bank of water tubes disthe individual superheater posed above said chamber, a cross baiile extending through said bank and defining one side of ing through a pass, a second bafile extending from the lower end of said cross bafiie beneath said bank, a superheater comprising tubes disposed beneath said second baffle and supporting it and extending lengthwise of said water tubes, headers disposed adjacent the opposite ends of said second baiiie and connected to said superheater tubes, and a plurality of rows of water tubes extending lengthwise of the super-heater tubes and disposed between them and the chamber, with the tubes in one row staggered with respect to those in an adjacent row, the individual superheater tubes ext-ending in a direction slightly oblique to the last mentioned water tubes.
3. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a bank of water tubes disposed above said chamber, a cross bailie extending through said bank and defining one side of a gas pass, a second bafi'ie extending from the lower end of said cross baiile beneath said bank, a superheater comprisingtubes disposed beneath said second baii'le and extending lengthwise of said water-tubes, headers disposed adjacent the opposite ends of said second baffie and connected to said superheater tubes, one of said headers being disposed adjacent the lower end of. said cross baiile and the superheater tubes being bent near the ends connected to that header, a support secured on said header and curved to conform to the bent ends of the superheater tubes, and tile carried by said support and adapted to protect said bent ends from the heat of the chamber.

In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber, therein, a bank of water tubes disposed above said chamber, a cross baiile extending through said bank and defining one side of a gas pass, a second baffle extending from the lower end of said cross b'afi'ie beneath said bank, a superheater comprising tubes disposed beneath said second baiiie andextending lengthwise of said water tubes, headers disposed adjacent the opposite ends of said second baffle and connected to said superheater tubes, one of said headers being disposed adjacent the lower end of said cross baffle and the superheater tubes being bent near the ends connected to that header, 2. support secured on said header and curved to conforrn to the bent ends of the superheater tubes,
and tile carried by said support and adapted to protect said bent ends from the heat of the chamher, said tile and support having interengaging portions to secure the tile to the support.
5. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a bank of water tubes disposed above said chamber, a cross baflie extendsaid bank and defining one side of a gas pass, a second bafile extending from the lower end of said cross bafile beneath said bank, a superheater comprising tubes disposed beneath said second baiiie and extending lengthwise of said water tubes, headers disposed adjacent the opposite ends of said second bafrleand connected to said superheater tubes, one of said headers being disposed adjacent the lower end of said cross baille and the superheater tubes-being bent the ends connected to that header, a support secured on said header and curved to conto. etc the bent ends of the superheater tubes, tile carried by said support and adapted to protect said bent ends from the heat of the chamber, said tile and support having interengaging portions to secure the tile to the support, and other tile arranged in courses upon said first opposite ends of said second baiile and connected to said superheater tubes, and a row of water tubes extending lengthwise of the superheater tubes and disposed between them and the chamber, said superheater tubes being disposed at a horizontal angle to'the water tubes in said row.
7. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber th rein, a superheater comprising a row of straight tubes in position to receive heat from said chamber, and a row of water tubes disposed between the chamber and the superheater, the superheater tubes extending in the same general direction as the water tubes but at an angle thereto such that a water tube disposed between the chamber and a portion of a superheater tube. i
8. In combination, a furnace having a combu tion chamber therein, a superheater comprising a row of straight tubes in position to receive heat from said chamber, a row of water tubes disposed between the chamber and the superheater, the superheater tubes extending in the same general direction as the water tubes but at an angle thereto such that a water tube is disposed between the chamber and a portion of a superheater tube, and row of water tubes parallel to said first row and disposed between the chamber and said first row.
9. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a superheater comprising a row of straight tubes in position to receive heat from said chamber, a row of water tubes disposed between the chamber and the superheater, the superheater tubes extending in the same general direction as the water tubes but at an angle thereto such that a water tube is disposed between the chamber and' a portion of a superheater tube, and a second row of water tubes parallel to said first row and disposed between the chamber and said first row, the water tubes in said two rows being staggered with respect to each other.
10. In a boiler, two bafi'ies disposed at an angle to each other, a header disposed between said bafiles, tubes having bent ends secured to said header, a support secured on said header and curved to conform to said bent ends, and tile carried bysaid support and adapted to cover said bent ends.
11. In a boiler, two baffles to each other, a header. bafiles, tubes having bent ends secured to said header, a support secured on said header and curved to conform to said bent ends, and tile carried by said support and adapted to cover said bent ends, said tile and support having interengaging portionsto secure the'tile to thesupport.
12. In a boiler, twobaiiles disposed at an angle to each other, a header disposed between said baiiles, tubes having bent ends secured to said header, a support secured on said header and curved. to conform to said bent ends, and tile carried by said support and adapted to cover said disposed at an angle disposed between said bent ends, said tile and support having interengaging portions to secure the tile to the support, said support being pivoted to said header, whereby the support and tile may move with respect to the header.
13. In a boiler, a header, a plurality of tubes having bent ends connected to said header, a
port pivoted adjacent said header and curved to conform to said bent ends, and tile carried by said support and adapted to cover said bent ends, said tile and support having interengaging portions to secure the tileto the support.
16. In a fluid heat exchange device, a furnace presenting a combustion chamber, a flat and horison-tally inclined row of superheater tubes extending into the chamber from one side thereof, a superheater header spaced from and located above said row of tubes, a baffle resting on the row of tubes and having one end interposed between the header and the tubes, bent tube portions constituting reversely bent ends of the superheater tubes extending around the inner end of the baffie and entering the header along a plurality of rows, and a heat resisting construction arranged around said reversely bent ends so as to provide protection for the header by forming with the above mentioned parts an enclosure in which relatively inert gas is trapped.
17. Ina fluid heat exchange device a furnace presenting a combustion chamber, a superheater header extending across the furnace, a baiiie extending from the header to a side of the furnace, superheater tubes having reversely bent ends extending from the header, and a heat resisting structure embracing the reversely bent ends and one side of the header, and including parts movably mounted to the end that the connections between the header and the reversely bent ends may be accessible for inspection and repair.
18. In combination with a steam boiler and its furnace, a row of horizontally inclined boiler tubes extending across the furnace, and a row of superheater tubes above the boiler tubes, the row of superheater tubes being so arranged that it is relatively parallel to the row of boiler tubes, but that individual superheater tubes extend at a small oblique angle to the boiler tubes so that each superheater tube extends across a plurality of boiler tubes.
19. In a fluid heat exchange device, a furnace presenting a combustion chamber, a horizontally inclined row of superheater tubes extending into the chamber from one side thereof, a superheater header spaced from and located above said row of tubes, a baflie supported by the row of tubes and having one end interposed between the header and the tubes, bent tube portions constituting reversely bent ends of the superheater tubes extending around the inner end of the baiiie, and a heat resisting construction arranged around said reversely bent ends so as to provide protection for the header by forming with the above mentioned parts an enclosure in which relatively inert gas is trapped.
. 20. In a fluid heat exchange device a furnace presenting a combustion chamber, a superheater header extending across the furnace, a baffle extending from the header to a side of the furnace, superheater tubes having curved ends'extending from the header, and a heat resisting structure embracing the curved ends and one side of the header, said structure including parts pivotally mounted in order that the connections between the header and. the'reversely bent ends may be accessible for inspection and repair.

In combination with a steam boiler, and its furnace, a row of boiler tubes extending across the furnace, and a row of superheater tubes beyond the boiler tubes, in the direction of furnace gas travel, the row of superheater tubes being so arranged that is relatively parallel to the row of boiler tubes, the individual superheater tubes extending at a small oblique angle to the boiler tubes so that each superheater tube extends across a plurality of boiler tubes.
22. In combination, a furnace having a combustion chamber therein, a superheater comprising a row of tubes in position to receive heat from said chamber, and a row of water tubes disposed between the chamber and the superheater, thesuperheater tubes extending in the same general direction to the water tubes and having portions at such an angle thereto that a water tube is disposed between the chamber and a portion of the superheater tube.
