Serial No. 896,041.
This invention relates to a water tube boiler that is provided with a plurality of transverse drums connected by banksof tubes with baffles for guiding the gases across the tubes from the furnace of. the boiler.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section along the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a section, one-half being along the line 22 of Fig. 1 and the other half along the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view of the boiler; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing a modification.
In the drawings, reference character 1 indicates a transverse drum at the upper rear end of the boiler. located at the upper portion of the front end of the boiler at a lower elevation than the drum 1. Lugs or brackets 3 are provided at the ends of the drums 1 and 2 by means of which these drums are supported upon a steel frame work 4. on the outside of the boiler setting. The supporting framework or structure comes below the level of the upper drums of the boiler and comprises horizontal beam members supported on columns near the end of the boiler setting.
A plurality of steam circulating tubes 5 that are straight for the major portion of their lengths connects the drums 1- and 2,
' these tubes being bent at their ends to enter the drums radially. A drum 6 is located at the rear of the furnace at a lower level than the other drums and is connected by a plurality of water circulating tubes 7 to the drum 1 and a bank of inclined steam generating tubes 8 to the drum 2, these tubes also being straight for the major portions of their lengths, but bent at the ends to enter the respective drums radially.
A furnace 9 provided with a grate 10 is 10- 4 cated below the tubes 8 and bafiies are provided for directing the flow of hot products of combustion from the furnace 9 across the bank of tubes 8 and in contact with the steam circulators 5 and water circulators 7. The lowermost tubes in the'bank 8 are bent around to protect the drum 2 from the heat of the furnace. A baflie 12 extends from the upper uppermost row of tubes 8, the lower end of A-transverse drum 2 is.
A valved outlet side of the drum 6 approximately along the middle of the bank of tubes 8 somewhat less than one-half of the length of the row of tubes.- A transverse battle 13 extends from the end of the bafiie 12 upwardly across the tubes of the bank 8 above the bafile 12 to the lowermost row of tubes 5.- A baflle 14 extends from the lower side of the drum 1 in an inclined direction in front of the tubes 7 to the said baffle being kept in place by means of lugs 14' attached to the uppermost row of tubes 8. A tapering gas path is thus provided for the gases from the furnace as they flow over the tubes. An outlet 15 provided with a damper 16, that may be operated by a lever 17 on the outside of the setting, is provided in the rear wall of the furnace behind the upper end of the tubes 7 1 Staggered deflector baflies 20 that are spaced apart are provided uponsome of the rows of tubes 8 to control the gas flow across these tubes and a plurality of similar deflector baflies 21 extend along the upper side of the lowermost row oftubes 5 from the drum 2 to the baflie 13. A vertically disposed baflie- 22, extending longitudinally of the drum 1,
. is locatedin front of the exit ends of the tubes short distance from the lower side of the drum 1. A bafiie 24 is provided in the drum 1 between the lower end of the pipe 23 and the bafile22. A steam outlet 25. is provided at the top ofthe drum 1 and is connected to the dry pipe 26 in the steam space of this drum. pipe 27 leads from the lower side of the drum 6. 5 i
The rear wall 28 of the furnace extends upwardly to shield the sideof the drum 6 and lagging material 29 is provided between the end of the wall 28 and the drum 6 to prevent gas leakageby this ,drum. A dust chamber 30 is provided between the wall 28 and the n5 rear wall of the boiler setting from which of the upper row of tubes 5 and around the drums 1 and 2. Safety valves 33 maybe provided on the drum 1.
The drums and tubes are supported by means of the steel supports outside of the setting, the drums. 1 and 2 being supported, leaw'ng the drum 6 to move due to expansion and contraction of the banks of tubes 7 and p 8. The deflector baflies 20 and 21 control the gas flow area for the gases flowing through the tapering pass across the tubes 8, along e tubes 5, across some of the rows of tubes 8 and then across the tubes 7 through the outlet 15.
.enters this drum from the tubes 5. The hot gases contactin 'with the tubes 7 heat the water entering t e drumfi. The ends of the drums 1 and-2 extend beyond the walls of the boiler setting, but the drum 6 is entirely within the boiler setting with its ends including the head seams received in recesses in the walls of the setting but out of contact with the walls of the recesses. The drums 1,
2 and 6 may each be made with a single longitudinal joint so located as to be out of the path of the hot gases. The head seams for the drums 1 and 2 lie outside of the boiler setting and are thus protected from the hot gases. protected due to their being received in recesses in the walls but without interfering with the movement of the drum due to expansion and contraction of the boiler parts. Thenormal water level is maintained in the drum 1 and awater gauge may be connected to this drum to indicate the water level.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the bafiles 20 and 21 shown in the other illustrative embodiment of the invention and the two lower rows of the-steam circulating tubes 5 are omitted. The baflle 14 is extended downwardly, as indicated at 14" along the a furnace, asteam ofi'take drum, a submerged intermediate "drum located below the water level of the olftake drum and at the opposite side of the furnace, horizontally arranged The head seams for drum 6 are also the ofl'take drum and the lower drum so that the horizontal distance between the drum centers of the main bank of tubes is much greater than the vertical distance, the steam circulators constituting a steam pass in which the steam generated in the main bank of tubes is subjected to drying action on its way to the offtake drum, the tubes of the water circulator bank being bent away from a line connecting the centers of the oiftake and lower drums to provide a lower drum tube seat portion extended at the top of that drum for the securement of the bent ends of the tubes of the main bank therein.
2. In a low head water tube steam boiler, a boiler' setting, a furnace, a steam ofl'take drum, a lower drum at a level beneath that of the ofiftake drum, watercirculators connectin said drums, an intermediate submerged drum at the end of the setting opposite the oiftake drum, horizontal steam circulator tubes having inlets leading from the top of the intermediate drum and'outlets communicating with the steam space of the offtake drum a deep main bank of steam generating tubes directly connecting the lower and intermediate drums and positioned at a small angle to the horizontal so as to occupy the major part of the boiler space between .of the main bank over their entire length and then from the main bank of tubes directly to the steam circulators and thence again across the steam circulators and some of the tubes of the main bank to the lower ends of the water circulators, the steam circulators providing all of the direct communication between the ofl'take and intermediate drums in order that there be no provision for water movement directl from the intermediate drum to the oflt'ta e drum.
