6 Claims.
This invention relates to a steam boiler of the 'Stirling type having a superheater with headers that are accessible from below the boiler. The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, reference character 1 indicates the rear of a boiler setting, and 1' the sides thereof, the setting being partly broken away in the drawings. A small portion of the boiler furnace is indicated at 2. Upper steam and water drums 3 and 4 have their steam spaces connected by steam tubes 5 and their water spaces connected by circulating tubes 6. A baffle '7 is provided between the drums 3 and 4 and rests upon the circulating tubes 6. Two lower or mud drums 8 and 9, one of which is at a higher elevation than the other, are connected to the drums 3 and 4 by banks of tubes 10 and 11, respectively.-
A tube 16 extends from the steam space of the steam and water drum 4 to the superheater inlet header 17 that is supported from the support 13 by means of the straps 19. One or more rows of superheater tubes 20 connect the header 1'7 to the header 21 and are located in the space between the banks 10 and 11 of tubes and are generally parallel to the tubes in the bank 10. Rows of U-tubes orreturn bend tubes 22 also located in the space between the banks 10 and 11 connect the superheater header 21 to the superheater outlet header 23. The superheater headers 21 and 23 are located below the bafile 13 so that they are accessible from the space below the boiler in order for the same to be inspected or cleaned or repaired. The headers 21 and 23 may be supported upon one or more vertically disposed supports 23' resting upon the drum 8.
A plate 24 may be provided below the drums 8 and 9 and tubes 14 to close the space. A baffle or plate 25 extends from the plate 24 to the drum 9 to prevent leakage orv short circuiting of gases from the furnace 2 to the last gas pass of the boiler.
Changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a steam boiler 'of the Stirling type, two mud dums and two steam and water drums, circulating tubes connecting said steam and water drums, a bafiie extending from one mud drum to the other, a superheater header above said circulating tubes, superheater headers below said baflle, superheater tubes connecting said first named header to one of said headers below the baffle, and superheater tubes connecting the headers that are below saidbaflle.
2..A boiler having a plurality of steam and water drums anda plurality of mud drums connected by banks of tubes, means for passing hot gases across said tubes, a bafile between the mud drums, and a superheater between said banks of tubes, said superheater having headers on the other side of said bafile from the gas pass, said superheater headers being supported upon one of said mud drums.
3. In combination, a boiler setting, a water tube boiler having banks of upright tubes connecting upper and lower drums, two superheater headers at the lower part of the setting, superheater tubes connecting the headers so as to conduct steam from one to the other and extending upwardly into the setting, and a row of tubes extending downwardly through the setting and conducting steam to one of the headers, the tubes of said row being connected to one of the headers and arranged substantially parallel to the superheater tubes to form a substantial part of the efiective superheater surface.
4. In combination, a boiler setting, a water tube steam boiler having banks of upright tubes connecting upper and lower drums and extending across a gas pass, a superheater having an outlet header at the lower part of the setting, superheater tubes communicating with the header and extending upwardly therefrom into the gas pass and thence downwardly, superheater inlet tubes extending downwardly through the setting where they are exposed to heating gases so as to constitute a substantial part of the superheating surface,and connections at the lower part of the setting establishing communication between the downwardly extending parts of the first mentioned tubes and the inlet tubes, any
water occurring in any of the superheater tubes draining into the connections or the header.
6. In combination, a boiler setting, a water tube steam bofler having banks of upright tubes connecting upper and lower drums and extending across a gas pass, a superheater having an outlet header at the lower part of the setting, superheater tubes communicating with the header and extending upwardly therefrom and thence downwardly into the gas pass, superheater inlet tubes extending downwardly through the setting where they are exposed to heating gases so as to constitute a substantial part of the superheating surface, and connections at the lower part of the setting establishment communication between the downwardly extending parts of the first mentioned tubes and the inlet tubes, the superheater tubes co-operating with the inlet tubes to cause the steam to travel ,vertically through the setting and successively in opposite directions.
6. In combination, a boiler setting, upper and lower drums, upright water tubes connecting the drums and extending across a gas pass, a superheater located rearwardly of some of the water tubes relative to gas flow, a superheater outlet header at the lower part of the setting, superheater U-tubes having corresponding legs connected to the header and their main portions extending upwardly therefrom into the gas pass, a row of superheater inlet tubes exposed to furnace gases within the setting disposed adjacent and substantially parallel to the main body of the superheater tubes to conduct steam thereto, and connections establishing communication between the other legs of the U-tubes and the inlet tubes at the lower part of the setting, any water in the superheater draining into the header or the connections.
