The principal object of the invention is to provide a shaving brush which will efficiently apply powder or cream or other material to the face for shaving purposes. a
,A feature of the invention is that the free ends of the bristles are in concave form so as to receive creamor powder and hold the cream or powder conveniently for application to the face of the shaver.
Another feature is that the bristles at the concave portion extend substantially at a right angle to the base line of the-fixed ends of the bristles so as to form a firm support for the powder or cream.
Another feature is the method of making the brush described in detail below. I
Otherfeatures will be pointedv out below.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating one step in making my brush ;v
Figure 2 illustrates, in elevation, a second step;
Figure 3 is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating a third step;
Figure 4 is an elevation, partly in section, of complete brush embodying my invention; and
Figure 5 is a plan of a brush embodying my invention. 0
A bunch of bristles is placed in a suitable cup 2, the latter having an internal convex boss 3 and the bristles are tamped, or shaken, down in the cup so that the flag ends within the cup are convexly formed at 4. A rubber band 3 may be placed around the cup before tamping of the bristles and then, after tamping, it is slipped off the cup and around the bristles, to hold them together so that when removed from the cup they may be tightly bound by a light string 5. The butt ends at 4 are then cut off level to form a straight base line 6, as indicated in Figure 2. The 7 lower or butt portions of the bristles may then be dipped in rubber, indicated at 7, and allowed to dry for 24 hours. The bristles are then inserted in metal ring 8, as indicated in Figure 3, and have their butt ends vulcanized to the ring on a vulcanizing table, said ring having preferably the inwardly curvedportion 9. A ferrule 10 is next applied and is held to the metal ring by black pitch 11. Any suitable handle may be used but I show a handle having a celluloid outer por-' 'tion 12 for any suitable inner, body portion and 1932. Serial No. 641,250
this celluloid may be conveniently held to the ferrule by a solution of ethyl acetate 13.
It will be noted that the central bristles of the bunch are side by side and extend substantially at a right angle to the base line so that complete support is provided centrally for the cream or powder to'hold the latter at the center of the 0 flag ends of the bristles and available for application to the face of the shaver. j
What is claimed is: I
1. The method of making a shaving brush,
ends to form such depression; and then, while said flag ends are so depressed, permanently connecting the bunch to a holder.
2. The method of making a shaving brush consisting in placing the flag ends of a bunch of bristles side by side in a receptacle having a convex boss, said boss directly engaging said flag ends and forming said ends with a central concave depression; then removing the bunch from the receptacle and levelling off the butt ends of the bunch; then vulcanizing said butt ends to a holder; and then connecting the holder and a handle together.
3. The method of making a shaving brush consisting in placing the flag ends of a bunch of bristles side by side in a receptacle having a convex boss, said boss directly engaging said flag ends and forming said ends with a central concave depression; then removing the bunch from the receptacle and levelling 01f the butt ends of thebunch} then vulcanizing the butt ends toa ring; then connecting a ferrule to said ring; and then connecting said ferrule and a handle together.
4. The method of forming a shaving brush consisting in placing the flag ends of abunch of bristles within areceptacle having a central convex boss, said ends being in direct engagement with said boss; then placing an elastic band around the bristles; then tightly binding the bristles together by a string; then levelling off the butt ends of the bunch of bristles; then vulcanizing the butt ends to a holder; and then connecting the holder and a handle together.
