TOILET ARTICLE AND METHOD 0F MANUFACTURING THE SAME Filed Feb. 19. 1931 INVENToR wlTNEssEs I @imgTi/nde waa /gmdf n I Mk@ ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 29, 1932 UNITED s'rATas ARTHUR Lnannwiinr,` or BROOKLYNJT'EW YORKA moILn'r ARTICLE AND METHOD or MANUFACTURING THE SAME Application filed Februaryl 19, 1931; Serial' No. 517,078.
An object of the invention is to provide a toilet article having a pumice back with a cavity in which the back of a brush is secured.
when annealed and it is desirous that the back V- of the brush fit the mould tightly at the cavity. Additional objects of the `invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred formv ofthe vinvention is described. t In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the several views, of which Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the toilet article, y Y n 39 Figure 2 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the toilet article, and
Figure?) is a sectional view on the line S-Sof Figure l.
In the manufacture of the toilet article, a.V mould is prepared having a proJection to form the cavity 5 in the pumice and powdered pumice, mixed with silicate of soda, is disposed in this mould and is annealed, the mould being removed from the powdered 49 pumiceearly in the annealing process so that the shrinkage of the powdered pumice with the silicate binder will not serve to break or crack the powdered pumice with its silicate binder. f
It is important that the portion of the d Another object of the invention is to provide a toilet article having a back formed lmould forming the cavity 5l be greater in length and width than the back 6 of a brush l7, so that with the shrinkage the pumice back at its cavity 5 will be of a size which will permit the back 6 of the. brush 7 annule 50,
cavity .5 tightlyl to give a neat appearance. Preferably the pumice has another opening 8 at its top and the portion of the mould formf 4ing the cavity 5 has rounded ends 9 to fit the rounded ends of the back 6 of the brush.
l The back 6 of thefbrush is manufactured of non-expansible material, vsuch as bakelite, so that when the back 6 of the brush 7 is secured by glue, or other means, in the cavity 5 in the pumice back 4, moisture will Vnot serve to warp or break the back 6 of the brush and the back 6 of the brush will remain secured in the kcavity 5 of the pumice back 4 at all times ready for service.
The toilet article, when the manufacture is completed, will have a pumice back 4v with a cavity 5 in which the bakelite back 6 of the brush 7 is secured by glue, or other means. The brush 7 has bristles 10 which may be of in g a cavity therein, and anon-expansible any desired length and any desired stiffness. 7.0,

2. In a toilet article,a pumice back having a cavity, and a non-expansible brush back secured to the pumice back inV the cavity.
3. In a toilet article, a block of moulded 80 powdere'dpumice bound with silicate of soda, Y
a cavity in one face of the block, and a `brush having a substantially non-eXpansible and non-contractible back, secured to said block within the saidl cavity thereof by an adhesive and about which back the moulded pumicey block is contracted. l 'l Y Y 4. In a toiletarticle, a contracted block of moulded powdered pumice bound with silicate of soda and having an integrally formed A'standing therefrom, and a brush having aA lil peripheral Wall ofl the same material upsubstantially Vnon-expansible and noncon tractible back positioned against the block 'with the interior of said Wall contiguous to the edge of said back and about which said Wall is contracted, said Wall being of substantially the same height as the thickness of the back of thev brush whereby the outer face of the brush back is iush Wththe upperedge of said Wall, and additional means oo-operating with the `Wall of the moulded pumice block to secure the back of said brush flXedly l Y to said block.
