e. Figure 5 a sectional view through the form shown in Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a side elevationshowing the $0 Figure 6 is a plan view of the support, the
sign plate and ,rim being removed. y
` Referring to the` accompanying drawing,
" 1()` represents the rim pOITSOIi 0f the Sign "frame, which is in the form `of a split ring,
r 5 and has a longitudinal channel 11, in its inner face, defined by the parallel ribs 12, said channel being adapted to receive the marginal edge of a sign plate 13. The marginal edges of the` rim, outwardly `of the ribs,
i 40 constitute the circumferentially extending `flanges 14. On the outer face of therim, at oppositesides of the split, are secured `the outwardly extending lugs 15 and 16, which may be attached to the rim ends by welding,
5 or otherwise, or which may be formed thereonlby manipulating the material of which the n rim is constructed.
`Thesupport for Vthe sign plateand rim, which holds the latter tightly in `position on the Jformer, comprises a block 17 y which may 1932.` `serial No. 625,915.
, the block 17, and extending beyond both ends thereof, aremthewings 19, which may be shaped toconformwith the contour of the sign plate, as illustrated. i
, On the inner side of each of the saidwings co there is formed an` inturned, longitudinally extending, marginal flange 20, beneath which is` adapted `to lbeengaged one ofthe side flanges 14, of the rim 10. i
Que end of the blockwl? is extended above 65 its `upper face21, to form a llange 22,which is connected, at its ends, `to the .wings `19e. This ilangeis to be engaged by the lug 16, of the rim, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
Connecting the intermediate portions of the wings 19, ",above` the block, is `a transverse bar. 19', and Jformed centrally and longitudinally through `the block 17 is an opening23. ltemovably engaged against the unllanged end of the block isa plate 24, having `an opening 25, adapted to register with the opening 23, and disposed through these openings of the plate and block, is a bolt 26, having anut 27, forholding the plate in position.@ Y
It will ,be `noted that the plate 24 extendsabove the block 17 to a distance approximatelyequal to the height of the flange 22, and that it engages with the lug 15, of the run.
To assemble the device, the lug 16 is hooked over the flange 22, and the rim is then brought into position with the adjacent portions of its flanges 14 in engagernent with the inturned flanges 20, of the wings 19;. The end 90 of the rim, carrying the lug 15, is `then sprung to a slight degree, and the signplate placed in position with its edge seated within the channel 11, after which thesaid end of the rim is broughtback into position with `the 95 lugrlin closeproximity to the lug 16. The
`plate 24` is then placed inpositionon the bolt 23, which tightening movement causes 10U,
Supportnsmeens Sher/11. in., Eeeres, 4s. and; 5, is employed, said means being formed along the same general linesnas thatwalready described, with slight modifications in the outline thereof, so that the supporting means will conform with the 'cornerof-` the rim Surrounding fhesgaplate This fbfm-is'esitaia1u 'adapedffor este incos- Hti' Wh'suspnfled Orl Ylanguggnsff 1D the fOrmShOWIi .inf.Fgel'mii the rimjt'28'i has the,` samecross' section as lthat already described, being provided with. the channel 29, for the'periphery of the sign plate 30, and lthe, marginal'flangesy 31, together withthe lugs 132 and 3 3, onthe outer faces of. the respective ends thereof;l
`The supporting means, used in'y connection with thefri illustrated in Figures 4, and 5, comprises an h'ollow'block. which inv-.f cludes the arcuatewall. 3,5,the endf portions 36 and 37, of which, are'direetedY inwardly to lie: at right vanglesto each other, the former end ,portion being f, slightlyA 'greater` length"than` the latter, for aj purpose that` will ybe obvious from the description to follow. Formed' through the end portion?l is a threade'dopening'. l
"O ,n :each side of the block 34 is anintegral wing 89, corresponding 4to the wingsl 19, the eiids'of'whichfwings project beyond "the endsy of the bloclgand formedflongitudin'ally' on theinner face "of,l leach of," these ywings is inturned flange 40, corresponding with, andV performing the saine VVVfunction`- Kas the flanges i A20. 'l Disposed againstvthe inturned-end 37,5of the block, is a platei, provided with opening 42,v which registers with the r4openingV :38, 'a screwV Llibe'ing" engaged through the opening 4,-2, andl threadedintolthefopen'- ing 38, forholding the said-plate is prop-l er position, and for drawing the rim.
'The assembling of this'form of theinvention is practically the samefas thatv described in connection with the'first form referred to,
as will be *clearlyV understood, the lug ,32 beinghooked over :the endportion r36, andthe lug'38 being held bythe plate 43'.- 4 Y y The rectangular frame will usually be made in two sections, one of which will surround three sides Vofthefsignplate, and the other the remainingside, "usuallyfthey top. Two of the Asupporting devices, asl illustrated in VFigures 4 and v5, lwill 'thenbeI employed, one at'ieach'point,Wherev the ,rim ends'join.
